Getting back on topic... how's the Beta 2 testing going?

I still haven't witnessed a successful DarkSend transaction, in either beta. Tried on both betas for hours. I had one transaction time out for the first time moments ago, so that's progress.

No one wants to be associated with the word "dark" in social circles. The coin could do with a new marketing strategy. Try: Cash, Bucks, Coin, incognito or incog. Try dropping "coin" altogether from the name.

There are people on both sides of this argument.  I kind of think it's been decided to keep the name.  Hashing this to death is really pointless.  Maybe the developer will bring this up one last time before the coin is fully launched, but until then... lets not argue it again please Smiley

I agree. It has been pushed around and the name remains.

darkcoin name is a bit misplaced, xcoin was a good enough name

We have doge coin, sexcoin, tittie coin, fuck coin, and extreme coin. Yet somehow, people will see dark coin and slink away from the association? I don't buy it.
None of those are socially acceptable either, except doge of course.

If you put darkcoin in a twitter feed, everyone will auto assume you are a customer of Silk Road. I'm just saying that the coin name is one of the major factors in social propagation.

it has already inspired the creation of a 'darkroad'....

As someone with a significant amount of btcs invested, the coin name is important to me. I think it is the major factor holding the coin back.

Top 100 digital currencies by social media presence (Reddit+Facebook+Twitter followers):

http://crypt.la/2014/03/01/top-100-digital-currencies-by-social-media-presence/

1   Bitcoin....... 410,184
2   Dogecoin.... 207,791
3   Litecoin...... 37,596
4   ReddCoin.... 36,092
5   Vertcoin..... 34,594

...

55   DarkCoin.... 582

LOL. Behind such titans as BBQCoin.

Impressive, though, that DRK has the market cap that it does. Comparable to VertCoin with far less awareness.

Note: the list is missing our /r/DRKCoin subscribers so I added that in.

We're not even a blip on the radar yet, but I think that's good.  It's funny eduffield said he wanted to have the same kind of growth Bitcoin had, and though it's expedited, it's really amazing how closely we're following their footprints.  On an expedited timeline, yes, but similar growth pattern.

I'm a fan of this coin and have some. But promotion isn't going to make/break this coin. If you really believe in it, don't stress on the daily price. This will rise or fall based on 2 things.

1. How successful DarkSend is when people starting kicking the tires and test how anonymous the transactions truly are.

2. Market adoption. I think there's enough people, regardless of transaction type, that would like to know it's truly (or more?) anonymous. If it works as advertised, people will want & use it.

You know, I see this market adoption sentiment everyday and I have to ask, if people don't know about the product, how can they adopt it? Believe it or not, marketing can make or break a coin. A quick stroll down the alt coin list shows as much. I'm not even talking about the pump and dumps. See Quark, Max, vert and the like.

I won't lie, seeing those coins gain exposure while dark remains dormant is disheartening. Hell a quick google search turns up very little on dark. That list of coin exposure should tell us something. No one is going to market dark for us. If we say we are going to hold for long term, you should understand that this is a different calibre of markets. New coins saturate the markets everyday. Lets not bury our heads in the sand here. See earthcoin for a great example of a coin that depended too much on the whole "long term" plan. That coin has lost 800% value in under 2 months and is sinking lower as other alt coins rise.

Just my two cents... And to answer the unasked question, yes I try to promote dark coin on Reddit.

I agree, when Dogecoin first came out, it had nothing but good marketing going for it and it BLEW UP. Missed that train myself cuz I thought it was gonna take more than that kind of marketing for a coin to do good. Boy was I wrong lol

Timing of market presence is definitely key.  We also need the naysayers at the right time.  Naysayers are a phase in growth.  It's like the denial phase.  I agree though, that we can't stand too many naysayers when the technology is too vulnerable.  We need inspiration and support in the prenatal phases.

Or when nobody can answer the questions except the developers who need the time to be coding Smiley  It will come, and boy it'll be something, I just know it!

eduffield will be at that crypto coin convention in April.  About a month away??  And I suspect he wants the coin rolled out 'bout that time.  If all goes well, we'll be the talk of the convention  Grin  Even tit coin will be outshined....maybe

Yes, we will need marketing, but to push things at this point just brings in the nasty people who insinuate things and then the developer has to come in and clarify stuff taking him away from his work, etc...  and it's not fully functioning yet.  Then people complain it's not open source, and we have to explain yet again, not until it's finished!  and it just makes life difficult.  When we put the information out there, those who are looking will find us.  The others can find us when it's finished.

at least that's what my opinion has become, LOL

But yes, then we'll blow the canons and let the world know we're here Smiley

Speaking of updating the OP I think it would be very helpful to include a link to the GPU miner (with credit to the creator of course). I see a lot of people in this thread asking how to find it, which is understandable given that it's not exactly easy to find.

FYI new people reading this and wishing to GPU mine DRK - https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/ann-sph-sgminer-multi-coin-multi-algorithm-gpu-miner-added-marucoin-475795

+1  We will need some good marketing...  Things very very rarely sell themselves.  The best ideas/technology often don't win out.  There's much more to success than technical merit, a sad but true fact.

I think the OP should probably be updated to give people who glance at the thread an indication of the progress that is going on, and a more current state of things.

DRK *needs* mass adoption due to its protocol. It's not merely about value. DarkSend is more effective the more people there are to mix in transactions at a given time. Therefore we eventually needs multiple DarkSends per minute around the clock. This requires a large global user base in order to avoid time zone effects.

We should definitely promote (with good taste). Price volatility is a small cost to pay (and in any case, the baseline will end up higher).
