I think bitcoin is at verge of early majority trying to get in, and thus all the drama in bitcoin space.
Decred last year launched with innovators & lucky early birds getting in, now it is trying to transition to early adopters with bare bone infrastructure and good working beta s/w in place with next 2 releases. We are yet at least 2-5 years from early majority i think.
I think the process is long because of "(re)education"; it takes a critical mass of people rethinking "currency".
These ideas are spreading but they take time, as people's presuppositions about money are deeply ingrained.
However, after bitcoin becomes mainstream, it will pave the way for another alternative to spread much faster as people will already know what a crypto-currency is, and its advantages.
(This was often repeated but it seems appropriate to state it again here... Google was not the first search engine; Yahoo and AltaVista & others came before... yet it was Google that got it right.)
