I don't think 1000 coins as collateral for node ownership sounds unreasonable as a starting point. If 2500 nodes come online, it would only take a doubling or so of the market cap for it to be slightly profitable from the onset (assuming there are no services initially that would add to this profitability). $150 at current rates. Not a prohibitive entrance point for those looking to get in now.

Hopefully this advanced notice quells the potential for future criticism of how helium was distributed, assuming everything else goes as planned.

Buy/mine 1000 spreadcoin now, have enough to own a helium node in the future. Simple enough.

Nothing is finalized yet. It will be announced soon, but I do think that the majority were leaning towards 1000, not 10000. I think Coins mentioned that HLM could look into dynamic collateral at some point. Best to just wait for further details at the moment.

I haven't seen any particularly strong arguments for one option or another.

So, unless anyone wants to raise some serious concerns now, we'll run with Master Node collateral at 1,000 HLM. Thanks to everyone who gave their input.

@entropycoin did raise an interesting point about making the collateral dynamic. We won't do anything on that for about a year, but it's not going to be forgotten as a possible future option. We'll need to get a stable network first. So that will be the main goal, getting people using master nodes and creating some useful tools, apps and guides to assist in that process.

From what I have heard and read it will be 1 for 1, so if you have 1000 like you said in SPR then yes, you will have 1000 HLM.

What is this dude talking about? When I first got into crypto in Jan of 2016 Spreadcoin was one of the first coins I found, and I mined Spreadcoin solo for about 6 months when the network hashrate was between 250-300mhs total. The only reason you think it's not a well known coin is because it isn't worth $500 a coin and the only reason you know about it now is because of the recent price increase I bet... If you look around more constantly looking for coins with good development and good ideas instead of just chasing the coin that is worth the most you would find a lot more of these coins that you call "Unknown."
