Ethereum has brought so more attention to the cryptocurrency world. Just look at the market cap on coinmarketcap.com . We are now coming out of a recession in the cryptocurrency world for most of for 2014 to the end of 2015. http://coinmarketcap.com/charts/
The masses love bitcoin but it is slow and it is stuck with crypto 1.0 tech!!!! The masses want to be able to do more hence Ethereum. Ethereum open the door to crypto 2.0 but that is it. Ethereum is difficult period!
