I assumed the community would prefer that I write about the machine, rather than keep silent and mine.

Maybe I was wrong?

Don't let anyone convince you differently; the work and updates you've posted so far are a tremendous help to all of us here. Keep up the fantastic work!

Why would somebody who is into the scam post critical reviews like http://garzikrants.blogspot.ca/2013/01/avalon-asic-miner-review.html where he clearly explains he got paid BTC 25 to write a review?

Just for the record, I was not paid anything to write a review.

The 25 BTC was a donation-refund, and a review was not mentioned at all at that time.

Months later, I was bumped to the front of the line -- again, without asking -- and they asked me to do a review.  I was free to say "no" or ignore them at any time.

I assumed the community would prefer that I write about the machine, rather than keep silent and mine.

Maybe I was wrong?

The actions that Avalon took to most credibly and honestly demonstrate what they've produced seem faultless to me, and I suspect to many people who have some amount of understanding of the technical and social issues related to the Bitcoin project.

Thx for the review, BTW.  It was most interesting to me.  I hold hope that the Avalon team will see their way clear to run their business in a way which fosters both competition and mutual benefit among others who may have the resources to, and interest in, further building a robust Bitcoin network.

Maybe the trolls have forgotten that you bought ASICs from everyone. The reason you're reviewing one is that only one of those has delivered. If those trolls happen to be employees/viral marketers/fans of a competitor, they may want to keep in mind that they're attacking one of their own customers too.

Ignore the Trolls, it says valuable time and brain power, no need to argue with rocks.

Price for bitcoin go up, we all see that total network power go up, but this is not a ASIC on work, this is GPU miners are back.
i will believe in ASIC only when more ASIC owners post videos and reports here.

My personal opinion:

Jeff is in the AVALON scam too.

24 hours after he received it, he posts 6 real photos and some shit a kid can do with Photoshop, when he knows there are close to a million $$$ at stake.

Is he in on the "BFL scam" too.  Jeff posted that he ordered from each of the vendors.  Does that mean we can't trust his BFL review when he posts that?

Bitcoin Foundation should absolutely pull their unit apart, post pics and videos, issue reviews by several different people, tweak the hardware, etc.  Expecting users who've paid for their unit (even if they've received a discount) to do that when they could be mining is not reasonable.

It's safe to say we are going to ignore your personal opinion.

Why would he post his concerns that the machine has various reboots that could be blamed on overheating?

Quote
Nevertheless, the unit has seen several cgminer restarts, and a few full machine restarts.  Machine restarts seem to happen every 4-6 hours.  Even ignoring more obvious means of restart detection (login and look at uptime, or ping-monitoring etc), a restart is a clearly audible event:  At startup, the fans race at full speed for a few seconds, before "calming down" to a more moderate pace.

One of the temperature monitors consistently reads close to 50, so it is possible or even likely that temperature is playing a factor in these restarts.  Yifu stated that this machine has several failsafes, where it will restart upon abnormal events.

No need to post this in all the Avalon threads...keep it to the dedicated 'scam' thread.

While the first customers might get ASIC its doubtful later customers will make any profit from them. It will be a race to the bottom imho

Bullshit. With 400W maximum electricity consumption, even those in batch #3+ will pay-off their machines sooner or later.

complete agreement. especially if we rig solar or wind such power sources. i'd be shocked if it wasn't a better investment then any interest rate a bank offers. of course, the increasing value of bitcoin is an even BETTER investment, at least the last year or so... 6 months ago it was 5 bucks or so, after all.

dam ... it maybe the price up above $20 a BTC.... or imo its the proof that ASIC's are real ..... and maybe the fact that minimum of 68Ghash has been added to the network... but i seen the next difficulty adjustment prediction jump in the last 5 hours on http://allchains.info/

went from 2960000ish 8am GMT 31/01/2013   to 3147163.31859 as of 1pm GMT 31/01/2013

gtz to Avalon, and nice to see in the hands of a developer... as opposed to some big business investor etc

Hmm still no source code link on the web page ...

jgazrik, can you rip the firmware from the unit?

ssh in and 'cat /dev/mtd1 > mtd1', 'cat /dev/mtd2 > mtd2', etc until you have copies of all the mtds, then scp them down and post them on a file locker or something.

Thanks.
... if the image also contains the source code ...
otherwise he'd be giving out a GPL3 binary and not have source code to give those who also request it with the binary ...

I think you should just give up on this. Never expect Chinese to respect any licensing.

Lesson learned, go to China, you will see tons of business solution software (commercially) built from open source project/software.

To the bitcoinbet or whatever it's called.  Grin

Speaking of which, surely someone's collecting on a bet related to Avalon's delivery of ASICs right now.

http://betsofbitco.in/item?id=1016
Butterfly Labs will start shipping ASIC miners before Avalon

http://betsofbitco.in/item?id=1003

http://betsofbitco.in/item?id=1032
ASICminer will be the first company to prove they have mined with ASICs.
