You need to lock the wallet first and unlock again then import.
Lock using wallet lock
Then unlock using walletpassphrase.

So I take it that during the ICO we can send coins from anywhere (exchanges, etc) to the website, because we manually designate what address we want to the vrm sent to.

I have VRC in an exchange, plus VRC in 1.6.5 wallet : so can I send direct from the exchange (using the address specified in the web interface in my wallet) and specify my wallet address (or any other, eg paperwallet, under my control) for the Verium to go to ?

Yes you can as long as you have the private key for the address where Verium is to be sent you are all good. Doesn't matter where ICO investment VRC comes from.
