I think ROI should be classified as some kind of mental illness......some kind of incurable nervous twitch...... Cheesy Cheesy

As in: " Oh, you've got ROI - that explains it, sorry",  or "My ROI is killing me".
My ROI flares up every-time a new miner comes out!
They make a cream for that but the applicator can be a bit disturbing. Shocked

The site says the S3+ B7 were supposed to be shipped the 20th. I have yet to receive any shipping information for products I purchased for more than a week ago. Whats the hold up?

If you ordered an S3+ that would be Batch 8 which will begin shipping Sept 20 or earlier.

What does ROI mean?

ROI = Return On Investment

or

ROI = Rate Of Imagination

... according to your link.

I just don't understand why other people are so obsessed with other people's financial decisions. Why does everyone need to make a profit mining? Why does everyone assume their calculations are correct for another person's scenario? I also love how these ROI calculations never seem to take into account "salvage value" of the old equipment, expected increases in the value of BTC, or the enjoyment some of us get from this hobby. Do you go to the guy down the street who's spending a bunch of money restoring an old Camaro or Mustang that he's never going to ROI? No one is saying I ordered a bunch of S3's and I'm going to get rich!

The world is full of companies who charge too much for product and still manage to find customers, and the world is full of people will to pay more than they should for products. Please accept it and get over it. If anything take advantage of the opportunity and start your own hardware company and undercut everyone else and be a hero.

Exactly...

FYI I buy most of my equipment from EBAY and AMAZON... so that means I am paying like 1 btc!
but then again I dont pay anything for electricity so I dont much care. and I am mostly using money I recycled from selling off old equipment and mined BTC...
Why dont I pay with BTC? cuz it all gets used up duh!
Sure wish I kept at least one of those 7970's! haha...
where are all the flamers who said I couldnt run 7870 xt's maxed out on Dell 375 watt power supplies??? Those desktops are all still running fine. and the power supplies were already 5 years old.

People point out that items won't ROI because...

A)  They hope the manufacturer sees that fact, and reduces their pricing to make it so it will.

B)  Just in case you happen to know some tricky to suddenly make the miner earn twice as many coins for the same gigahash.

and...

C)  So they can get you to convince them that ROI doesn't matter and they should go ahead and spend that Bitcoin burning a hole in their pocket.

I agree with all of what you say above, however, I don't think it hurts to try and provide factual information backed by calculations for those new to crypto ( and there are plenty of them daily ).

I would argue we need to educate the new blood to welcome them so they can avoid making costly mistakes that ultimately sours them on crypto to never return.

I also see this as a hobby and am thankful more competition has started to show up.  What does not make me happy is a company I fell in love with suddenly reverse the top 3 reasons I fell in love in the first place. So yes honey please come back and remember the good times we had I want to make this work.  ( Yes, I am tired )

Love, such a fickle thing...

Ok, so I had three of my four B5's on 250 and they ran great but I felt like I might have been pushing my luck some so I put them on 243.75 and man, I must say, from philipma's expectations of what he said I should get. I'm doing pretty damn good.

The first image is the one machine that's never gone past 237.5.

Indeed.  243.75M is the new 250M; at least for me anyway.  At 243.75M, my units draw less power at the wall (413W at 29C) with lower HWE% and better hash rates than at 250M.  Go figure.

Thanks to philipma1957 for the additional frequency codes.  Now, if he could only do something about my fan speed readings Grin ...

To reiterate, each is only powered by a dedicated Corsair CX500 80 Plus "Bronze" PSU with only 2 PCIe power inputs:

Moving away from the negative hopefully.... I have an ROI question that I cannot figure out how to calculate. As I have stated, I am able to set up miners, but not really smart about them.

I own 4.8Ths that is already ROI, including electrical costs. I have pre-ordered two S3+ to (hopefully) ship around Sept 20. They were paid for with 1.16BTC generated by my mini-farm after it reached ROI (free BTC). I calculate them as 450GHs each or 900GHs for the equation.

That will bring my mini-farm up to 5.7THs. It has been established and is almost not arguable that a single S3+ cannot ROI by itself.

My question: As an added component to an existing farm, is it possible for the additional benefit of two S3+'s to the already income-producing condition to 'ever' benefit by 1.16BTC? I don't understand how to calculate existing hashing power into the ROI equation.

Thank you for any assistance. I also would like to apologize to JPChrist. I agree that personal attacks do not benefit the community and I look forward to learning from his helpful posts.

since your 4.8 TH farm has given back the investment, what they do now, is give you "free coins" (if they generate more, than what your electricity costs)

so, for everything you add to your farm, the only worries you have, is to deduct power costs and and then you can use the rest to make your ROI on your S3s go away faster, but remember to "save up in the bank" to be able to buy newer equipment, when your old equipment cant pay for the electricity alone anymore..

I started out with 3x Antminer S1s they have ROI and given me enough coins to buy the 2xS3s, now i have all 5 units hashing away, and i almost have enough to buy 3x upgrades for the old S1s...

- Note - The Net hash has gone from 132 mil to over 195 mil in last 22 days.  It makes you wonder about the lack of supply from bitmain all of a sudden for next 30 days and yet some other company is bringing so much hashing power out?  Wonder if that new hashing power suddenly goes offline when the s3+ starts to ship or all those new s3+ units get added on top of that staggering 60 million network increase.  I think I would be more concerned if it came off the network slowly as we approach the Sept 20 date.   Giving conspiracy guys some very damaging ammo.

Ha! I am praying that it is S3+ testing since it is a new board design. We have seen from B1-B5'ish that shipping untested products can wreak havoc and confusion with 10,000 individual items having a dozen different, sometimes unique, problems. I would rather that they test for 30 days then to send me a miner that is unreliable, quirky, and un-returnable.

My opinion only,

I have NO idea why people are buying batch 8, even with an overclock the units wont even return 50%.

I agree with most of what you say, but isnt the picture and example of a different unit?  Also you are using a .13 cost for electric.  For example I have .07 which would double my earnings.

Don't get me wrong I am a strong supporter that the current change of bitmain to preorders ( 20 plus days out which is an eternity in crypto world ), not lowering price ( like they have done in the past to help their customers have a chance at a 100% ROI ). no coupons for returning loyal customers etc is not a good change.

Just want to help people make the best decisions....

It's what's AFTER that!:

That's my line:
Linux version 3.10.12 (xxl@ubuntu) (gcc version 4.6.4 (OpenWrt/Linaro GCC 4.6-2013.05 r38031) ) #167 Mon Aug 11 14:47:09 CST 2014

Doh! I for some reason thought that was the system time and it was messed up on the date. Haha! It shows #154 Mon Jul 28 13:12:00 CST 2014

So I'm assuming I should flash it with 0811, which will add advanced settings to miner config to change frequency?

...or you could just stay on the current version (same as mine) and do the SSH route with "vim /etc/config/asic-freq".

In August 19 you posted this...

Anybody interested in purchasing an S3?  I have a few extras.  I can do 0.7 btc including shipping. Send me a pm if interested.  Can ship as soon as tomorrow. Discounts if interested in more than 1.

You must be a real stand-up fellow to try to stop people from buying at .58 while you try to sell at .7

I know... 30 day difficulty, blah blah blah. But for .12 LESS they stand a lot better chance at breaking even.

Pick a side and stick with it already.

I'm not trying to stop anyone from doing anything, just putting the facts out there. Also, I have every right to offer to sell an S3 at a price competitive with bitmains. Personal attacks just embarrass yourself and have no place on a forum like this. I guess you didnt read my other posts where I'm always happy to answer questions or help new people get into mining. However, that probably doesnt matter to a "stand-up" guy such as yourself. Cheers.

Actually I don't present myself as a stand-up guy. I am in fact a n00b who knows very little. Your post caught my attention because I recognized your name from past posts which were both helpful and insightful. That's why I was surprised that your top post here was so hypocritical. You criticize others for buying something pretty much what you are selling.

So now that we are having a calm discussion. You say, "I have NO idea why people are buying batch 8, even with an overclock the units wont even return 50%. " and you say, " I have every right to offer to sell an S3 at a price competitive with bitmains". So, if we should not buy from Bitmain, then why buy from you who is offing a competitive price to Bitmain that still will not ROI? How is buying from you a better decision to save an estimated .08 with figures you provided that show the buyer will ROI at -.2BTC? (Your provided chart.)

S3 makes ~0.01 BTC/day. Today is aug 21, batch 8 is shipping by sept 20, about 30 days later. Even with 20% diff rises, the miner shipped today will make at least 0.2BTC before batch 8 ships, making 0.7BTc offer TODAY a relative bargain.

But that leaves the .7BTC buyer still behind by .5BTC (.2BTC earned), which JPChrist has 'proven' will still not break even. Yet he peddles his S3's which will not ROI while shouting that the rest of us are fools for buying the S3+ with better specs for about the same loss as he is offering.

0.7-0.2=0.5
0.5 is less than 0.58

I've confirmed with BITMAINTECh that its not possible to identify that an Antminer S3 is different from other from physical review, i've ordered 2 from amazon from some guy who's not BITMAINTECH, i'll be posting about my experience, perhaps i could check which firmware the antminer have and verify that i have Batch 7 (since thats the one "pre-ordered"), any ideas are welcome boys.

what exactly are you trying to do???

I bought 2 antminer S3 that are supposed to be Batch 7 from Amazon from seller: Bitmainantminer <- thats his name on amazon.
They will arrive soon, and i need to verify and certify my self that those units are:

100% working parts & real parts
Never used
Batch 7

So, my only idea since there's no way to verify that the batch is actually BS7, is to set frequencies and see what # GH/S i get.

Why didnt you just buy from bitmain instead of a marked up (and probably used) unit from amazon?

i didnt buy from the official site since its really hard to get bitcoins (I live on a Caribbean country) anyway i've learned my lesson but for now i need to solve my issue, so give me some ideas.
