Nope, bacteria will grow.

Maybe mineral oil , but is high viscosity and has slow circulation.
Also, not thermally conductive.

Dropping a half bottle of Diesel Kleen in there will solve that problem. Make sure it has a lid and you should be good to go. Wish I had a spare S3, I'd give it a trial run myself. Sounds interesting.

Why not stick it in a fish tank filled with veg oil? Easy peasy.

A fish tank with distilled water and a closed loop system would be a good experiment, and cheap yeah.

A risk of electrolysis  ?   but I would love to see it.

Distilled is not conductive.

Unless it becomes dirty, that's why filters exist.

'The right to privacy matters'
I believe it is possible to set the operating Mhz of the chips (from what I've seen from the videos on Youtube). I wonder if there is a point where I can completely shutdown the fan or run it at an acceptable level.

This is because I want to host them in an office and only start them at night or at low speeds.

I doubt you could run it without a fan, you could run it with quieter fans than the standard noisy beast it comes with as standard though Wink.

yeah I got it to 55db  vs 70db for about 20 bucks.

Actually, the link that SerialLain included isn't the correct kind - you're looking for Novec 7000 series.  The big difference is the boiling point of the liquid - the eBay one boils at 165c, so useless for cooling, the Antminer would have burned out well before encountering this.  Novec boils at 34c (93f!), which really is amazing... Of course, this means your ambient environment needs to be far less than 93f, I believe they recommend in the 70f's.  And don't forget this still requires a radiator inside of the Novec chamber typically with water moving through it, acting as a cooling mechanism to cause condensation.  If you're seriously considering something like this, they made a really good video on how to actually do it here:

It's more practical and less sales pitch than the other linked video.

Yes actually I believe the correct one is 3M Novec 649.

3M continues to amaze me with these kind of things.

Immersion cooling is awsome but expensive and difficult to implement. Especially in home.

Yeah right now I'm talking with 3M to get 10L of that liquid.. Smiley

I just searched for a little bit but I couldn't find any small scale equipment right away.

However I think it's possible to install it myself? Right? At least in practice?

Need to check the price of that liquid!

It's not cheap  Cry

at least you can always use sunflower oil if you like to live dangerously.

yeaaaaa... as stated, not only would it ruin any warranty but it is never a good idea to operate the unit without the fan.

Honestly if quietness and/or low heat output are the main concerns s3/s3+ would be your best option as long as you don't care its a little more watts per ghs. I'd say my s3's are quieter than a window ac unit, the s5 is/seems to be louder.

average s3/s3+ - ~450g/360w
s3/s3+ uc'd/volted - ~300g/170w
What voltage for 170W ?

GT1850 fan should do the trick, almost no noise but strong airflow, but difficult to find, maybe in china

Before I would take a loss on it I would get quiet fan's in a push/pull and under clock.  You will have approx 20 or so per fan extra costs to get a nice quiet ones.

But I would at least try a quiet push/pull with good under clock before selling it since you already invested in it.
I am pretty sure it is safe to presume he is hiding this in his office for free power, what he really needs to be concerned with is not the noise or someone asking what it is but be concerned with IT finding it on the network. Don't get fired over a couple bucks of electric.

Just to be clear I was assuming it's a office he has permission and just did not want noise during day.  If it is a "hidden" miner I don't support that at all and suggest him moving it home.
