Honestly if quietness and/or low heat output are the main concerns s3/s3+ would be your best option as long as you don't care its a little more watts per ghs. I'd say my s3's are quieter than a window ac unit, the s5 is/seems to be louder.

average s3/s3+ - ~450g/360w
s3/s3+ uc'd/volted - ~300g/170w

Before I would take a loss on it I would get quiet fan's in a push/pull and under clock.  You will have approx 20 or so per fan extra costs to get a nice quiet ones.

But I would at least try a quiet push/pull with good under clock before selling it since you already invested in it.

Then probably I'll run them at night when no one is around.

Do you have any practical way of hosting a single unit outdoor? A small closet maybe?
Depends on location, there is a user on here that has his running outside. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1073317.0;topicseen

Honestly though I would just sell it if i were you and eat the shipping cost. Hell you might be able to make a bit of profit if you get a craigslist buyer.

@ op

yeah this is most likely your best choice.

worst possible idea since it has 600 watts of heat. unless closet has ac and a vent out.

really should have asked us before purchase.

is power "free"

if so s-3's   use 400 watts and if under-clocked to 400 gh they use 300 watts.  s-3's are pretty easy to make quiet.

maybe some one would buy the s-5 and you put in 2 s-3's instead.  (this only works if power is "free")

I hate sounding negative and telling  you should have done something other then you did.

No fan... would not be possible unless you lived in a extremely cold ambient.  I have never seen anyone run without a fan.

You will want to look into fan's doing push/pull (with quiet fans) and most likely a under clock with it.  Between those things you could get it to run much quieter but you will lose hash speed most likely.

My 2 s3's are pretty quiet compared to my s5. an s5 underclocked will still run loud because of the temps, they get pretty warm regardless of what you do.

I ordered one unit. It's on its way.

I will find a place, don't worry.

I also found these pages for the interested.

Thanks for the reply.

no it always needs a fan.  but you can swap fans and run down clocked to get okay sound levels.

to be honest you fucked up buying these units if sound was the main issue.

here is the quietest miner in production.

run at 850gh sound is not a problem at all.

your s-5 fan is monster loud even at 850 gh instead of stock 1150 speed.

there are mods to the sound on an s-5 but it will never be as quiet as the avalon 4.1  I got s-5s to 55db while the avalon 4.1 is 42db.

Next time ask before you buy. I say that because your post's seem to suggest you already have the s-5's

there are more threads on the avalon 4.1 then this one:

still looking for fan mod thread on s-5

I believe it is possible to set the operating Mhz of the chips (from what I've seen from the videos on Youtube). I wonder if there is a point where I can completely shutdown the fan or run it at an acceptable level.

This is because I want to host them in an office and only start them at night or at low speeds.
