what do you mean in ERC20 ETH and ETH is different.
There are ETH wallets that do not support or are no ERC20 ETH wallet. By using this kind of wallet that does not support ERC20, you will not be able to receive any tokens from airdrops or bounty campaigns.

2) encrypt & backup local wallet
3) track bought price manually on an app like cointracking (b/c exchanges frequently purge trade history)
4) triple backup passwords, seeds

As a beginner 1st thing apart from all thing you have to accure knowledge about this field like what is blockchain and cryptocurrency how it works and other basic fundamentals, if you learn then you can trade or invest your own otherwise you have to follow others, and never follow others just take knowledge from others and DYOR. I am not telling you that you will never do any mistake, you will do mistake and from every mistake you will learn a lot, that will help you to grow by mentally and financially.
Best way to accure knowledge is read forum posts, read article, see youtube videos, follow twitter and news. Thats all..

I've only just started to scratch the surface of the crypto world and already I feel miles ahead of where i was only a week back.

Ok , first of all and this is very important , be careful your wallet and your password , you should to know if you loss your wallet file and your password or privite key , you will loss all .
That's real true . But I think you need to be afraid of this too much . If you keep your wallet file and never tell others your password , I think every thing is ok .And What I want to say is that you can join some aitrdrop in here and get free coin , learns how to trade them .
