A lot of people have been burned with Masternode coins via the infamous "presale auction in discord" format. A recent one went away with 20btc of gullible investors.
One way to know if a coin promising masternode is worthy or to ask yourself, what is the future of the coin other than masternodes? What will masternodes be used for, just artificially locking in the coins and nothing else?
One more thing, masternode coins isnt the best investment, if you ask me. If you discover a coin with good tech, team and roadmap then it would beat the returns of any of these coins. Check out MeVu.

I tried several masternodes for several projects.
None of them were profitable. There are some websites for masternode profitability but most masternode coins are just shitcoins and i am still looking for a profitable coin to run masternode.

For my part I just entered Smartcash, and here are my reasons:
Masternode cost: $ 850
Members discord (community): 12000
strengths:
- Balanced return: 55% (gain of 5500 smartcash / year)
- Number of active masternodes in the world: 13000 (very strong networks)
In comparison:
- Dash: 4600
- Zcoin: 3400
- Zencash: 10000
- Governance system in place and functional
- Significant cash flow for project financing
- Daily trading volume and strong increase in recent weeks despite a price that hardly moves ..
- 12000 people on Discord (very important activity)
- Hyper-simple Masternode to install with a script automating all the settings on the VPS!
Weak points:
- Pump and dump curve
- Available on small exchanges (Hitbtc, cryptobridge)
- Some sections of the website are a little abandoned (forum / news / smarthive report). But the community moved on the discord
- The abandonment of zerocoin technology (Zcoin) but in favor of BIP47 very soon

if you can masternode famous coins, its ok... but its very expensive to start usually. like dash requires you have 1000 coins of dash

passive income is strongest with a business that becomes "automated" cause income can be high but to get that going is very hard... successful entrepreneurship prob avg 5 years
