I don't think a bitcoin price ticker is really something that needs to be implemented that would just be putting unnecessary load on the server which you could just looked at another website in another tab.

Load?

Its not going to make much of a difference compared to the queries you have to make to display posts and categories and what not.

I'm not very in the know for this kind of stuff but its not a priority and not something that is really needed and I think I'm right in saying that it's a extra possible thing to consider for security issues and also it will eat some resources.

It would only take a few minutes to implement in the new forum software, have no effect in security, and take up almost no resources.

It doesn't have to put any load on the server if it uses a remote API and Javascript.

May Bitcoin be touched by his Noodly Appendage
This is for this kind of things I proposed to make us able to load the JS scripts we want

Making a ticker in JS is just a matter of minutes

I prefer Zakir over Muhammed when mentioning me!
Where would the price be from? Preev? Perhaps it might be a good idea to incorporate it but turn it off by default so that only those who really want to see it can choose to do so. It should also be very small and inconspicuous so as to not attract attention.

I don't think it will be from Preev. It will be mostly from Bitstamp or Bitcoin Average or BTC-e.
@Theymos : If you are implementing this feature, then please add a few providers and make an option to choose the exchange/provider. Best providers are Bitstamp, BTC-e, Openexchangerates, Bitcoin Average.

Not everybody use Greasemonkey (or other scripts) so I prefer this implementation rather than using a third party application.

+1. You are right! But I like and I prefer JJ's script. It has good features and also there are many scripts for other websites which can be used using Greasemonkey or Tampermonkey like barcode scanner for google search. Roll Eyes

P.S. Bitstamp's API has some problem now. I think they will fix soon.

Current exchange rate embedded in posts would be nice, since the image caching prevents third party image tickers/converters.

would be nice, instead of having to load a webpage.. at least for the people who spend a lot of time here.

what about those people who dont wanna be reminded of the price all the time but wish to interact on the forum?

If it is ever incorporated, then it should be an optional setting.

Also has anyone checked out the forums at Peercointalk.org? They have an enormous price ticker directly in the center of the page for Bitcoin and Peercoin. Prices are from BTC-e. They use Simple Machines as their forum software so something similar to it should be possible for this site if theymos ever decides to give the idea a try.

I haven't seen it but you said it's enormous? if we did have this feature and it wasn't able to turn it off then I would want it out of the way down the bottom of the screen so that I'm not staring at it 24/7.

as long as it was hidden by default I wouldn't mind so much I certainly won't be using the feature if it ever gets implemented I rarely look at the price of Bitcoin unless doing a trade where I need to verify the price

Sounds like a feature which is not needed and would just be a waste of time to even consider. we need to think about security features rather than showing the price of something on the forum...

That task is easily accomplished, but I don't think it would be such a great idea.

I have it on the forum now, Using the BitcoinTalk++ script. I think JackJack said he will be updating it for the new forum too, so if it isn't vanilla, you can use the script. It is a Greasemonkey and Tampermonkey script.

Somebody mentioned this over in Meta many months ago. I'd quite like it, but the mods didn't seem too keen on it from what I remember. Some thought it might be a bit tacky or something, but the option to toggle it on off would be good for those that didn't favour it.
