Yes, it's probably the best option to trade on an exchange. You can check available markets for a coin/token here: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/ark/#markets (we have cryptopia.co.nz exchange too already but it's not listed there yet)
ICO = Initial Coin Offering
Signature: probably signature bounty? It's getting coins for wearing a promotional forum signature.
With a wallet (be it for web, desktop, mobile or whatever) you manage your coins/tokens and other features.
Buy on an exchange, send to an address in your wallet to keep (for better security).
Wallets are handled in various ways. For ARK, you just need to save the seed. There's always a unique address/seed pair. With the seed, you have access to your address. You can have multiple address/seed pairs.
In general, always have a backup of all important data (wallet file/password, address seed/private key etc., depends).

Thanks for the reply. I'm not new to alts, I've just never invested in an alt other than the "regular" way of buying/selling on exchanges. I thought there was some sort of system similar to, or the same as, when people invested in ARK before it hit exchanges. I'm assuming that's completely finished now?
