In terms of the excess inventory both now, and 6 months from now, I'll pay the most attention to what John K might think.  He didn't take on the task of being an arbitrator, nor does his compensation package account for such a service, but he seems pretty good at it if he can spare the time...and is willing to graciously take the risk of the fallout.

Please use USPS to Canada. SRsly, Fedex/UPS charge brokerage fees USPS does not.

Seconded. I send packages to Canada quite frequently, and have learned that the USPS is far less of a hassle, and much cheaper than either UPS or Fedex.

These guys are right. Plus UPS will leave it at the door unless you tell them not to. Purolator is good too (DHL).

True only when packages are not flagged by Canada Customs.  I had USPS package held for few weeks.
When I called Canada Post they referred me to Canada Customs, when I called Canada Customs they referred me to Canada Post.
Nobody knew where my package was and why it was held.  After about two weeks it was released and I got the package.

If you are buying something cheap on e-bay, USPS is the way to go.  For any valuable or time sensitive packages I'd not use them.

It seems like Fedex/UPS/DHL/Purolator have a "special" relationship with Canada Customs and they clear packages before they get to Canada.

Anyway, most packages sent by USPS are not stopped by Customs, and it is much cheaper to send/receive them.
No HST to pay, no brokerage fees.

The extra 19 aren't perk units, the retail 1.99 BTC price includes a 6 month warranty as per above. I wouldn't expect to get back used equipment after exercising a warranty return. If he is going to mine with the groups warranty units and keep the profits in addition to his original payment great, but it would be in good form to throw something back to the group.

Also, if a unit is defective, doesn't Arklan return them to friedcat for a replacement?  Or is that only after the 19 units are exhausted?

I think he should lotto them after 6 months.  There's a spreadsheet of buyers ... one entry per user.  Use some external random site based on bitcoin, like what has been used in the past, so it's very clear who won.

M

I like this idea, expect 1 entry per USB stick purchased.

The issue is in 6 months some people wont want a USB stick, when others might.  Thats why I suggest an internal auction and then split the profits from that auction per usb stick purchased.

FYI..

One of the 10 i got was bad..  I am sending it to him and he is going to send me a new one - he responded fast and did not argue with me a bit.  I agree that the overage should be held by arklan in case someone else needs a replacement.  And it is correct: friedcat sends the extras so he doesnt have to deal with one-off returns from overseas..

Personally, i don't care if he mines the extras while he holds them (again that is only my opinion) - i think if he modifies the post he can show the status of the 19 as he replaces them so everyone can see - wouldnt think that would be a problem.  After the 19 are gone.. then it becomes a hair more difficult - another good reason for a maintained post about the status of the warranty extras to see what the fail rate is.

Arklan has done a great job with this - and has been very trustworthy and honest about the whole thing.  I would definitely buy some again in any group buy he chooses to organize.

Units are supposed to be pulled from the extras for replacement so that friedcat doesnt have to deal with it. basically to issue new unit and throw away bad unit.

I could get behind some kind of "perk" for participating in the group buy like this.

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/announcement-block-erupter-usb-195004

After shipping we do not refund, but still guarantee a six-month warranty of free replacement like our blades. However the replacement should also come in batch (10 at one time).

Not 5... There are currently 24 "extra" units: 19 included under the terms of our warranties plus 5 unaccounted for.

Six months of arklan mining with them could range from 30 to 50 BTC, that's already a nice bonus for managing the return policy.

All I'm saying is it would be fun and generous to throw them back at the group when it's over.

I could get behind some kind of "perk" for participating in the group buy like this.  I'd side with Arklan either way he chose to go but I'd prefer something extra thrown my way if it's available.  I guess I'm a little greedy. Smiley  Arklan, it's totally your call.  Most of us are very grateful for your service and would be more than happy to see you get all the extra for your time and effort.  Of course, if we could all get a little icing on the cake, that'd be pretty cool too.  And since none of this was in the original agreement, no one can get upset about how much reward they are "entitled to" since they are "entitled" to none.

that or maybe he allow arklan to mine with them

He has been mining with three hubs full including the warrantied units, at almost half a coin per day right now. After already being paid for 5, thats a very generous bonus from the group.

It would be a simple thing to throw the leftover warrantied units back at the group after 6 months.

Final thought on it is arklan did a great job I got what I paid and he was upfront about getting extras, if people feel jaded by this arklans reasonable and im sure he'll make a good decision even though per the terms he shouldn't have too.

Agreed.  When I ordered I had no idea that extras would be sent for warranty purposes, and I'm fine with arklan keeping them (and issuing them out for warranty purposes as needed).  As I am getting exactly what I expected to get, I look at any he gets to keep after the warranty period as a bonus for him doing a good job running the group buy.

im biased as i've gotten my miners and have already recouped half of 1's cost but I say let him keep them to use with a couple untouched as warranty devices.

that or maybe he allow arklan to mine with them keeping his original percentage fee and then doling out the rest as dividends appropriated to the groups purchase percentage of each individual in the buy? I have free power so I'd offer to host the pooled collective but judging from how up in arms everyone is I dont know if its worth it.

If no-one needs warranty swaps after 6 months, auction them off within the original group buyers, as my $0.02

What do you say arklan, does that sound fair to you and the group?

Seems to me that he's the guy who ran this show so it's legally and ethically right that the units are his outright.  We would not even know about them but for his high level of communications and transparency.

Again we are talking about the 19+ warranty units, warranty units covered under our 2.1013 payment. They belong to the group, and listed as warranty replacements by ASICMINER (~10 sent per batch of 300).

If the 5 are over and above what is reasonable to have for guarantee work, I say give them to him now so he can sell them for a good price (or I should say, these absurd price which likely won't last for long.)

My thoughts exactly.  He could have just kept quiet and no one would have known.  While I like the idea of getting an extra one for free, I really think arklan deserves the extras.

I might add that whatever the factors, this group buy put sapphires into peoples hand more quickly than any other that I know of, and for a rather modest markup as I see it.

And if ~arklan is one of the probably rare persons in the community who can be relied on to actually perform the desired warranty work over the coming 6 month period, we should count ourselves among the most fortunate Bitcoiners so far.

24 extra ? Oh. That kinda changes things a bit :| I would say leave the 19 untouched for warranty reasons, and Ark keeps the remaining 5 for his efforts ?

There are extras for replacements.  He'll most likely have to replace some from this group buy, so he probably won't end up with 19 extra in all.  Maybe Arklan can mine with them to a single address and then at 6 months, distribute the earnings (minus a hosting fee to Arklan) proportionally to everyone in the group, and keep them for himself at that point.
