in my culture gambling is typically frowned upon and is advised to go against but the community is not as strict as the rule may sound like and i still see people who gamble even if they are advised not to do so

in my opinion, while religion and culture can massively affect how one interacts with gambling it is still up to the individual if he is to gamble or not

some people may be part of a religion where gambling is strictly prohibited but if he is not so religious then it would not matter

1. The name of the culture, nation, religion or confession.
2. What, in your opinion, is the attitude to gambling (positive, negative, very good, very negative).
3. What, in your opinion, is this attitude related to and how can it be substantiated and proven. That is, what are the reasons for this, including, possibly, deep and hidden reasons.
4. Are there conditions under which this attitude can change?

1. Latin American Culture, in the case, the culture of the people from Venezuela (where I live nowadays).

2. Most of the people in this country are part of the Catholic branch of Christianism, and it is worth to point out how flexible Christianism is with it comes to gambling. According to the Church, gambling is not a good thing but basically it does not care as long as people are responsible with their habits, the same it is applied to substances like alcohol. All in moderation, because of it Catholics are usually criticized.

3. Well, I think flexibility and tolerance towards gambling in my country/culture has to do with the long standing history of social gambling, people usually gather just to play cards here, for example, and it has been this way for many years.

4. A change to this condition in my country would imply the religion of the majority to change over time, either towards Islam or Evangelist Christianity, which are more strict with the prohibition of gambling and alcohol consumption.

Majority of gamblers in my country grow the thirst for gambling because they want to make money. Most of them has no one o help them in life so they are poor. The fastest way t hey can get money is by winning in gambling to feed themselves and do other things. So, you see for the rich kids that has everything provided for them they dont see gambling as a good activity. If they want to have fun they have the money to visit recreational places, eat good food, play games and other activities. There are several reasons to gambling and poverty has been the highest in the world general. Only few rich persons who are willing to gamble which you can mostly find them online gambling or in the big casinos.

I am sure that any religion will fundamentally reject gambling.
Not all religions reject gambling but neither do they support it. Some religions like Buddhism do not totally reject gambling but they also do not support gambling totally. Christianity do not against gambling but no place in the Bible that talks about gambling. Religion like Muslims totally against gambling. Religion like Atheism do not talk about gambling at all but talk more about science and finding solution.

In Hinduism, there is story called Mahabharat, in which a king named Yudhisthir loses everything in gambling (including his wife), and this happening eventually lead to full blown war so it was really catastrophic.

Now, on morality grounds. By end of story, this king still went to heaven. So I'd say this story doesn't say that it was morally wrong but still for sanity in life itself it's better to stay away from it or at least keep it limited.

1. Religious culture, PH, Roman Catholic.
2. Negative, mostly. But there's a culture of using gambling as a means of getting donations when there's a wake of a relative. It means it will be legal to gamble even if the police pass the street because they got a permit to do so.
3. I think they look at it negatively according to religion (mostly) and some just know that their families are spending too much time and money on gambling that they ruin their own relationship.
4. Yes. Like today. People got used to online casinos and even shared links or hyped videos of winning in slots. It's a different era now and I don't think religion and tradition are being taken seriously anymore.

I am sure that any religion will fundamentally reject gambling. If we talk about Christianity, it clearly says, "You can't serve both God and mammon," but since gambling embodies, foremost, the desire for profit, then the essence of the fact that religion does not approve of this is clear to everyone.

The whole joke is that in our time, being religious has become a very trendy activity. However, only a few follow the canons of religion. All the other "believers" interpret religions at their discretion and always in their favor. They will easily accuse anyone of sin but will always present themselves as "saints."

The holy books of Christians do not directly prohibit gambling.

However, such human qualities as greed and pride are very severely condemned in them. Therefore, if a person gambles in an attempt to hit the jackpot, then we can say that he commits a sin (and regardless of whether he wins or loses). Also, a duel with fate, faith in one's luck, and not trust in the Lord, is also a sinful act. I am not sure that by gambling, every person necessarily commits a mortal sin, however, the Christian religion does not welcome this.

Also, the Christian Bible condemns the love of easy money. According to Christian tradition, the source of decent wealth is work and faith in God.

I am not sure that in the future Christianity and gambling will be able to coexist in a single concept. Too serious an attitude to gambling, in my opinion, is incompatible with Christianity.

At the same time, man himself is sinful by nature.  This does not close the path to Salvation for him.

2. Positive. At least that's what I consider it as. Like considering my community, most people don't really give a crap if someone's gambling or not. Of course, they don't necessarily push to advertise it or make casinos for the local place, but they are also not negative about it. It's just a normal persons perspective on something they don't really concern themselves with, even if they're Catholic! (which is our main religion).

Honestly, I'd say a lot of people are more for gambling if they had money. They at least know not to when they don't have any though. If they had money they'd 100% partake in it. I know quite a few friends (and their families) who are into it but only because they're from a well endowed family in the first place.

Roman Catholicism or Christian are somewhat not strict with their beliefs in gambling, not like the Muslims that are really very delicate on it when that subject matter comes in. So yes, even if we see Jesus in the bible going against gambling per se, it's become a norm for this religion to be open as well with gambling.

And just like in the Philippines, predominantly Christian but they still have the biggest casinos.

  • Newport World Resorts - formerly Resorts World
  • City of Dream Manila
  • Solaire Resorts, which has 2 casinos
  • Okada Manila

I'm from the Philippines btw.

In Christian or Catholic countries and places, you'd see and hear their sermons that are against gambling. But look at the believers, they don't mind gambling and they treat it just a casual activity that can be done by anybody.

So, even with strict rules and beliefs, there are changes that are happening this time. It is becoming a norm for many of them and that's why if someone sees them gambling, they all give a reminder and not a lot of criticism.

Which looks as an acceptable attitude of a believer towards it. I don't know with the others but that's what I have observed so far.

Let's consider how each individual culture, nation, religion or confession treats gambling and why. If you try to understand this issue and come to some rational grounds, you can learn interesting things.
...
1. Christian, Philippines
2. Personally the effect of gambling for me is in the neutral. I see both its positive and negative aspects.
3. Sometimes I enjoy playing (winning or losing) but sometimes I found myself in the losing streak and trying to win back my losses but end up losing more, so I stayed in the neutral ground regarding gambling.
4. For me, yes. If it personally affects me and the people that surround me, either losing or winning. If losing, I started to get irritated and chance of me trying to win back my losses and if winning, I sometimes forgot to stop and enjoy my winnings and tried to be greedy until I lose.

I wouldn't say a particular religion, but from what I observed, it seems that gambling is really universally accepted now. There could be some strict nations, really devoted to one religion and it has been in their cultures for centuries.

But there could be some religion that are open or not really care if their population, regardless if practicing or not practicing their religion is very open now to gambling. There are even some practice to raise some funds for a church, someone their denomination play something or "gamble" to raise that needed money.

I would not want to literally emphasize on a particular region but what I have experienced so far on various kind of religions over gambling is that... Non has ever endorsed it to say... Gambling is a practical and advisable activities on their religions, they have all been discriminating their fellow religion persons who gambles like gambling is an abomination to their religion.

So far... I have not seen a dedicated religious persons gambling and every dedicated religious practitioners has always have that insights that whoever that gambles does not have morales on their religions.

then I can offer you the following template:
In my culture the attitude towards gambling is different based on aged groups. The older generation who grew up in a more conservative lifestyle see gambling as not good. And it wasn't so popular during their time while they grew up. For now the newer and younger generation that are more liberal see gambling as positive, a way to make some few cash to have some fun. And in this time is although not as accepted but it is not a damming thing to discuss in the public unlike many years ago. The conditions for which the attituted towards gambling changed is because of the modernity, poverty, and increase in new technology that has made it more widespread than it used to be. You can access a gambling site on your smart phone even if you live in the jungle. And you can do it privately without anyone knowing if you have placed a bet on a game or not.
