I think the best solution will be the multiple options like the ones added by strombom in his build.
I`m running the 2 working modules from my aval at 355 with lower hw error rate then the build 519 at 43:300
Also the option to make the fun run in manual mode full speed or automatic mode is needed.
The unit with 15C air in stays at about 27C  at full speed (it worked at about 39C with all the previous builds, with )
Also the option to add lower modules then 2
I don`t know why but build 622 did not work (the hash rate was always 0  )

The option to donate some of the hash rate (%) to the developers was not added , this also must be added

can i get a link to modified firmware which allows 325 + 350 in seetings

thanks in advance

However the fans will run at 100%

Since the information about overclocking the Avalons seems to be out already and it's only a question about time when someone distributes a modified bit-file, I will post mine:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16881231/avalon_clone/firmware/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr703n-v1-squashfs-factory_20130519b.bin

I have been running it for a month on a batch 1 unit. Happy mining Smiley

Edit: I should add that the fan PWM is locked to 100% in this firmware.

Note:

Just wanted to share this fact. People have invested intrest to get the maximum return on their investment and are not required to share the results with the public as was the case with strombom.

The fact that the cgminer team shared their results with the peeps the moment they were confident with the code is just another reason we should continue to support open source.

As you can see from my photos above I am running 0622 firmware. For the purpose of these tests I have opted not to use direct USB from a laptop.
....

Thank you!

I was running the strombom modded firmware earlier which was working fine but running at 100% speed sounded like a mini jet engine  Smiley

Do you have AC? My avalon running temp is 47

No, just added enough thermal compound for each chip, and added an external blow fan to cool the bottom plate

Here is an update to Avalon unit #114 from Batch 1 running the new firmware.

Power Input 120v Ambient Room Temperature 20 °C/68.0 °F on a dedicated 15a Circuit

Hi

May i know which firmware is this? From strombom or the latest 0622 firmware? I am unable to see option for changing the overclock to anything above 300mhz in the official 0622 testing firmware

Thanks

As you can see from my photos above I am running 0622 firmware. For the purpose of these tests I have opted not to use direct USB from a laptop.

You will have to modify the /etc/init.d/cgminer file

I will give you the step by step instructions on how to modify existing entries in cgminer config file.

An easy way to do this is to ssh into your avalon after you upgrade the firmware to 0622.

Once you are logged in and at the prompt type cd /etc/init.d/

Next type vim cgminer

This will open up the vi editor. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the row you wish to change.

Now press i to get into edit mode.

once you are done in edit mode press esc it will get you back to command.

Finaly press : then w to write and q to quit

:wq

Here is a screen shot...

As you can see I opted to change the lower speed settings.

You need to edit /etc/init.d/cgminer.

Use Putty to connect to the machine
log in as root with the normal password

Code:
cd ..
cd etc/init.d
vi cgminer

i to insert

scroll to 43:300

change to

36:350

escape

ZZ

now you should be back to command prompt

Check that the edits were saved by doing vi cgminer again

Restart the Avalon by the power switch (not the reboot via web interface)

thanks!

Here is an update to Avalon unit #114 from Batch 1 running the new firmware.

The screen shots were taken at 1 hour and at 3 hours.

I will verify the power draw increase once I move the unit to a dedicated circuit before posting final power consumption increases.

Screen shot taken at 1 hour.

Flashed firmware to 20130607 then noticed a decrease in performance. Went from 72.5 to 60GH/s with a lot of HW.

Then flashed to 20130519 and everything is back to normal ~72.5GH/s.
Try this:
http://downloads.qi-hardware.com/people/xiangfu/avalon/next-testing/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr703n-v1-squashfs-factory-20130622.bin

Despite being called next testing, it should be much better than 0607.

Some results so far 350 with fans hacked to max speed Wink

Elapsed 3h 10m 59s
Diff1  Accepted 217849.00000000 1140.67/m 81652.35

I am positive that it will stay above 80 in long term

I am very happy!

Con, can you please advise us how to calculate HW error rate in %

Thank you

Mine is a batch 2 running at 240V for what it's worth, and it's a lot cooler here, being winter. Not sure which if any of the above are responsible for it, but it sounds like mine draws more power at regular speeds but less when overclocked compared to others' here?

Maybe batch 2 have different chips than batch 1? Just from pure mathematical point of view it is strange that 17% of hash rate increase resulted only 2% of increased  power usage

I'm testing with 325, it draws 670W, seems reasonable

By the way, I just restarted my Avalon which has been run stable for more than 1 month with 0225 firmware. Although cgminer restarted from time to time, it never hangs, means I could go for long holiday without worrying about it. But last time after upgrading to 0419 firmware I got hard hang which must be power cycled and if not discovered quickly, could put the machine in danger due to high heat and low fan speed. So I'm still not very confident that the latest firmware solved this hard hang issue. I think it is not cgminer related but rather some FPGA issues
