These are very good recommendations and I can definitely attest to the solidity of the Corsair AX (and even the HX series) series PSU. I also have a Silverstone 1250 Watt unit (Strider) and I'm wondering what you think of those.

I am thinking of picking up the Seasonic P-860 or it's sister Corsair AX860 depending on which is cheaper. Hmm, a quick newegg search shows that the AX860 (not the AX860i) is by far cheaper. Which do you think would be the better choice given that the AX860i is made by Flextronics instead of Seasonic.

PSU quality is not about brand. It's about specific models.

Since there is no "we only sell good rock-solid product" brand on the market,
most of product from "good brand" are cheap, low-end, or worse, expensive and high rated output with bad performance characteristics.

I don't know anything about the compatibility issues with avalon asic, so i cannot say anything about it.
However, this is a list of top notch 800W+ output PSU you can find on the market today.

Seasonic P-860 SS-860XP2 (in-house)
Seasonic P-1000 SS-1000XP (in-house)
Corsair AX860 (Seasonic OEM)
Corsair AX860i (Flextronics OEM)
Corsair AX1200i (Flextronics OEM)

And belows are slightly worse PSU compared to above.

SuperFlower Golden King 850W SF-850P14PE (in-house)
SuperFlower Golden King 1000W SF-1000P14PE (in-house)
Fractal Design Newton R3 800W FD-PSU-NT3B-800W (ATNG OEM)
Fractal Design Newton R3 1000W FD-PSU-NT3B-1000W (ATNG OEM)

Anything other than listed is typically worse including Enermax Platimax/MAXREVO, Antec HCP, Corsair CX, CoolerMaster SPH, SuperFlower Golden Green, Zalman Platinum, FSP Aurum Pro and so on though they are not in the same ground. actually, a few of them has matching characteristics with above listed. In this case, they're not listed because they're 80 plus gold PSU.

Anyway, Avalon's original PSU is 2 BTC worth. It means original PSU cannot be good one considering exchange rate of pre-order period. Their originally equipped PSU must be worse than Enermax Platimax/MAXREVO, Antec HCP, Corsair CX, CoolerMaster SPH, SuperFlower Golden Green, Zalman Platinum, FSP Aurum Pro.

Avalon homepage stated that the power consumption is "~ 600w @ 120v AC". Therefore, the data probably came from wall power meter like kill-a-watt. and less than 600W wall draw with cheap power probably means 450watt-ish real power consumption, so 4 module one's actual power consumption would be around 600watt, at best 700w. In other words, Good 600-650W PSU probably won't blow up with 4 module Avalon since high quality PSU typically can handle 110-120% load for a considerably long time.

However, long term exposure of near 100% or above 100% load is definitely not a good thing for PSU even if it's a good one, so I would recommend 800W+ good PSU. And maximum efficiency typically achived within 40-60% load range of PSU, Corsair AX1200i looks fine if there is no size issue(AX1200i is slightly longer than typical ATX PSU).

This sounds pretty much perfect for 3 module avalon. it might work for 4 module avalon, but I would not recommend it (I wouldn't even try)

Please give choises also for 4 module Avalon. Please not only cheap ones. Wish to get quality, stable PSU maybe 1000W+ that fits on the case?!

That means you are working on a batch #4 or why are you doing redesign ?

Why not another case cutout, rotate PSU by 180 degree, so it can suck cool air.
This would also allow exhausting fans

Since you are reading this thread ngzhang, helpful suggestion: 2-3 extra centimeters or 1 inch more room behind the power supply would make bigger psu fit.  This is especially important for 4 module units that need 1000W PSU and to allow modular power supplies for better cable management.  And there is room for it.

More pics:

Kingwin 1000W Modular power supply could not be installed, too big.  Too bad because it is a wonderful option, economical and good cable management.

Watch out for modular power supply - the additional length of the connectors leaves no room to plug in the PCI-E 8 pin connectors to the power distributor.

This next pic is of the power distributor:

The 24 pin connector is not plugged in.  It came like this out of the box and would not turn on, of course.  Scared me!  Was quite relieved when I discovered all that needed to happen was a plug-in of the 24 pin.  Started up fine after that.

just be careful not to get one that is too big:


This is pretty much the biggest you will be able to fit, and it is not recommended because:


it pinches the power cables more than I am comfortable with.

Careful with the TX series from Corsair. There are two models out (perhaps 3 by now) The original was NOT single rail. The V2 is. So if you're going to get one of these make sure it's not the older multiple rail design ones. I would recommend the AX or HX series from Corsair. AX is 80 Plus Platinum while HX is 80 Plus Gold.

sorry to hear the bad news. haven't heard of or researched that model. quick assumption, probably dual rail, probably can't handle 2 cards *edit = modules* on the same rail.

My advice to anyone buying a PSU for avalon (or even for normal computer) -- DON'T CHEAP OUT! I don't care if it's twice the price, After 2 PSU failures (second one blew the motherboard) I will never buy cheap PSU again.

This PSU is very well , 12V is 60A,about 720w,   It works well in my computer.

So I am waitin PSU list.

Can someone from Avalon chime in? That's probably asking a lot. I'd normally think a power supply is a power supply, but this is custom stuff and it's been a long time since I built my own towers. Knowing exactly which model is best would be great to know.

Seriously, why did you buy it without a power supply if you don't have enough technical knowledge to spec. one out?

He does have enough technical knowledge. However he is asking for ADVICE from those who have more up to date model knowledge.

He knows:
He needs a PSU
He needs an ATX layout PSU
He needs a high eff PSU
He needs a 700>W PSU
but he wants to know if anyone has any recommendations or known to work [should be all] when powering his $6000 PC.

And he has been told the answer 5 times now.  But he wants to waste Avalon's time by getting another answer from them.

So to make it dead simple:

Buy a top quality Gold rated PSU rated at LEAST 25% higher than the power required by the Avalon you ordered.

Go to Anandtech or 100 other hardware enthusiast sites and do your research.

I wasn't trying to waste anyone's time, and I think it's a completely valid thing to make abundantly clear. I write software. I don't build my own computers any more. I used to and can remember buying multiple power supplies over the years. I always thought they were basically interchangeable as long as the wattage was correct. The different details mentioned so far made me think otherwise in this case.

I could do all kinds of research, but I'd prefer to hear directly from the manufacturer (which we now will). If someone turns one on to find it not working and didn't follow the manufacturer's specific advice, they'd be at fault, not the manufacturer.

As to why I didn't include the power supply, I saw something about potential problems in customs. Delayed delivery didn't sound like a good thing.

In the next newsletter there will be a listed of officially tested PSUs. ( as well as on the wiki )

did not get a chance to post this as of yet, but we do have it.
