Can someone from Avalon chime in? That's probably asking a lot. I'd normally think a power supply is a power supply, but this is custom stuff and it's been a long time since I built my own towers. Knowing exactly which model is best would be great to know.

Thanks!

Seriously, why did you buy it without a power supply if you don't have enough technical knowledge to spec. one out?

He does have enough technical knowledge. However he is asking for ADVICE from those who have more up to date model knowledge.

He knows:
He needs a PSU
He needs an ATX layout PSU
He needs a high eff PSU
He needs a 700>W PSU
but he wants to know if anyone has any recommendations or known to work [should be all] when powering his $6000 PC.

And he has been told the answer 5 times now.  But he wants to waste Avalon's time by getting another answer from them.

So to make it dead simple:

Buy a top quality Gold rated PSU rated at LEAST 25% higher than the power required by the Avalon you ordered.

Go to Anandtech or 100 other hardware enthusiast sites and do your research.

Since PSU run with more efficiency near 100% load I plan to buy 650-700W Platinum for mine.
This isn't true.  PC PSUs are generally most efficient when loaded 50-80%.

Buy a gold model for power efficiency.  And buy one rated at least 25% over your expected demand.  Both efficiency and reliability drop as you get closer to the rated power of the PSU.

And if you are tempted by a cheap one, make sure to buy a spare.

Do you think this would be good enough for a 3 modules Avalon?

http://www.alternate.es/html/product/Thermaltake/SMART_M650W/914448/?

Personally have not had a good experience with thermaltake psu (just a personal experience, small sample size, take it for what it's worth)

PSU's that I'm happy with?

Enermax - all models - never had a problem or a failure with any Enermax psu. (sample size=more than 20, this is what I buy when building a system for a friend)

Corsair - HX-1000 - been running 3 7970's non-stop for more than a year now on my main system, i.e. the one I'm typing on right now. (note, this is the only corsair PSU I've ever bought, pretty sure they just re-brand PSU from other manufacturers so other models might be inferior)

Silverstone Strider Gold 1200W - the only silverstone product I've ever bought, terribly underutilized atm - planning to find a new home in my avalon, if/when it arrives. (silverstone has a very good reputation, just not as readily available in my area)

*edit with some questions of my own*

- do the modules pull from the 12V rail? (assuming yes)
- how many connectors per module? (assuming 2X6 pin each, or do they require the 8 pin ones?)

The wiki says 650W PSU on 240V for 3 modules imho.

Since PSU run with more efficiency near 100% load I plan to buy 650-700W Platinum for mine.

I would recommend an OCZ ZX 1000 W. Affordable and good quality, fully modular. Got 9.5 review score on johnnyguru.com
Have you tested that with Avalon?
Anyone knows if Antec High Current Pro 1200W Power Supply works fine?
Is there any "official list" of Avalon compatible PSUs ?

Hiya,

wondering if the specs (ideally: item# of amazon or similar) for the PSU required for running the 4-module AVALON were floating around somewhere.
