Hi all,

I am building my own custom miner clone based on the Avalon2 reference documents with the Avalon A3255 - Q48 chip. Thanks for everyone who have shared the specifications and their experience about the Miner in this thread [https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=210186.0;all] that has proved helpful.

I'll be working on V1.61 as opposed V1.5

I am currently in talks with the Chinese manufacturers to get the boards cloned and preparing all other necessary documents towards making this happen. I'd love you all to join this conversation and share your ideas and expertise to not only build the miner but also increase efficiency and reduce costs.

About myself, i'm an amateur hobbyist committed to learning new sciences, I'm basically a business guy and electronics has been my childhood interest but i had no better opportunity than now to learn and explore it and i am beginning my journey in electronics and thus i appreciate every valuable information shared in this thread. As an entrepreneur i value talent and people who've them and love having experts close in my circle to discuss my ideas and develop new products. I hope the same in this thread and in return as a gift of thankfulness i am giving away three 1 TH/S miners that we build to top 3 active contributors who help me on all technical and engineering other relevant aspects upon the successful completion of the project.

The expected time frame is 30 - 60 days to build the prototype, test and make the functional testing and sample produce it. I may visit china IF REQUIRED and i will choose one knowledgeable expert in this thread to accompany me.  I will post my questions here in this thread

You may also post your questions and suggestions and lets get this going at this thread [https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=482838.new#new].

Thanks
John Webb

Before sell them on ebay, i prefer propose them to you and to the people who have the boards without chip.

So i'm selling 400 Avalon Gen1 chip. 5 Packages of 80 chip.
I actually propose them at this price : 140€ / 80chip (about $190)

You can make me an offer. I'll make a discount if you take more than one package.

Hi strombom ! i'm interested by your hardware ! Could you MP me about that ? Do you still have hardware in stock ? Which model of chip do you need ? I have some avalon chip here !

Thanks a lot for your answer !!

I have 11 complete units purchased from strombom - control units, backplane, power distributor, hashing boards, all needed cables. No casings, radiators, fans and PSU. If you have interest, please contact me on PM.

So far this units can host Gen1 chips - marking A3256-Q48

Hey,

Do you sell control units?  The ft232 died on one of mine and I need a replacement.  Avalon don't answer emails.

Mining almost not profitable anymore, but if it's a reasonable price i'll take one...

Thanks.
Where are you from ?
I can try repair this board.

I have made some tests with the core voltage in order to lower HW error rate and improve overclockability. With the original BOM the voltage is less than 1.15 V.

In the Avalon users thread GandalfG has been running his boards at 395 MHz at 1.25 V. So I thought this would be an interesting test.

Power draw from the mains power:

1.2V 300 MHz => 936 W
1.2V 350 MHz => 1092 W
1.3V 300 MHz => 1056 W
1.3V 350 MHz => 1240 W

I will see if I find time to do some more experiments and get some statistics of the HW error rates at different configurations...

Well I don't know what to do now.  I think I've ruined the module.

I started troublshooting yesterday and took all the boards off of the heatsink, and found that the thermal compound didn't cover a lot of the PCB surface area behind the chips.

I decided to add compound to all the boards to fix that.  I think my mistake was in using cheap white "Stars" brand compound, and in assuming that it was nonconductive.

I also used too much, and some got forced through the vias and ended up on the topside of the boards.  Especially badly on board #2.

After all this the #5 board was working again, but now #2 (the one with the most excess goop) wouldn't work.  I cleaned a lot of excess compound off with isopropyl alcohol swab pads, but a bunch got up under the QFN48 chips, and I wasn't able to make #2 work again.

I thought I would run the module with the remaining boards overnight to see if I had any trouble with #5 again.  Well this morning the machine was reporting zero hashes and the fans weren't spinning.  I turned the PS switch off and then on again, and right away I heard arcing and saw yellow sparks/fire from inside.  I turned it back off and took the new module out, and found places where apparently the excess compound had formed a conductive path and caused arcing and carbon tracks.

The Avalon still runs now with just the original 3 modules, thank "bob".

I don't know what to do now.  I can't really ask strombom to fix my mistake.  I imagine some of the chips and some whole boards are still good, but I don't know how to clean this junk off of them... Sad

Sounds crazy,but I use aresol cans of Electrical cleaner with the little red plastic extension hoses  Grin  It can get in & clean very tight spaces.

Just let the components dry in the sun or arid place for as long as 2-4 hours or more before reassembly & start up,Good Luck  Wink

I also like Ceramique,its non-conducive to electricity & works very well,but it is thick Cool
