I've logged out of my account and my avatar hasn't changed.
Theymos has said that this will be a permanent implementation after April Fools's, so maybe it is after April Fools's day in theymos' timezone?
Thanks theymos for re-enabling avatars! Sorry if this has been asked before, (I don't want to read through all 16 pages) but why has this been re-implemented so suddenly? (I'm not complaining.)
Could be. I'm not sure where theymos lives but it's already April 2 in Europe, Asia, and Australasia. It's still April 1 in the United States though.
EDIT: I just checked your profile and it's still different. This is what I see:
When I click on your profile, I see a shower faucet which is the actual avatar you uploaded.

I believe it's a permanent add. Today's silliness was a fun way to reintroduce the idea.
Its probably permanent. They had it enabled a while ago but they turned it off, I still don;t know why though. And you are correct they probably released it today for some fun but it will get serious again tomorrow when april fools day is over.
I don't think they turned avatars off. It was the result of attacks/hacking attempts on the forum if I remember correctly.
Avatars were turned off due to something and yea I think it was some attacks. I don't know exactly but I seem to remember someone talking about doing malicious things with the upload button and somehow exploited something and therefore they disabled the function.
That's pretty much it. Basically someone uploaded a malicious file into the avatar directory and used it to hack the forums. This was the result:
