I'm here to remind you of my original post and bump this specific post.
It's been 1+ year since this thread was created.
Isn't it obvious your post wasn't taken seriously and no alts got banned since 1 year ? What's the point of giving it a bump when you already know it's not going to change anyone's mind.
A better solution : Lock it.

So, did altcoins get banned? Roll Eyes

I see many people not getting this -non troll- post, and it's okay. Not everyone understands sarcasm.

Back in the day, when we were making a shitload of money with altcoins, there was like 2-8 altcoin launches per day.
Mods and theymos were mad about it, because they thought alts harm bitcoin's ecosystem. So they wanted to kill alts, by doing a lot of stuff, which wasn't very obvious for non-thinkers. (Of course, there were some forum rule violations, but, meh. Nothing mods couldn't fight against. That's why they're paid, right? Wink )

Now, as you see, the alt sections were the sections with most views/comments, etc.
The people who were involved with alts pushed this forum's ranking to the sky. Not lame ass developers who fought about who'll take the credits for forking a few lines of code into BTC's repo.

This forum makes money based on impressions. Impressions are generated by the greedy ones.

Altcoins are part of Bitcoin, there is no separating them

The OP talking was about alternate accounts not cryptocurrencies hahahaha but I agree with him that having akt accounts was just making the forum look so dirty.

I agree. Reading is hard.

Anyway back on topic, I don't think altcoin issue is that bad. I mean they have their own corner and they don't get in the way of anyone trying to access bitcoin-related content/discussion. Also there are a gazillion altcoins out there so it's not surprising that the combined traffic from those gazillion altcoins exceed the traffic from bitcoin. As long as the altcoin stuff don't spill outside of their designated area then I don't see why peaceful coexistence is not possible.

How about you actually read the whole topic instead of pretending to do so? OP was talking about alternative cryptocurrencies. This has nothing to do with alt accounts.

Altcoins are part of Bitcoin, there is no separating them
They are not part of Bitcoin. They are parasites, leaching on Bitcoin's market.

How does the look matter? In the end, it is all SMF.
It matters. I would see no reason to join it even if I was involved in altcoins.

This is bitcointalk, not altcointalk. SMF is open source and free to use, maybe Theymos can delete the altcoin section and implement a new site? Altcointalk.org?
So you're openly saying that theymos should lose more than 50% of his profits which come from altcoin section impressions? Roll Eyes

I think the altcoins should still remain a part of this forum they generate a lot of visitors coming from the search engine if you search for one particular alt coins you will see that bitcointalk has a part of that search and it is very good for bitcointalk
Bingo.

I've seen this topic a number of times since the Alt Forum was created.

The Alt Forum ain't going anywhere LOL

It was created for the sole reason to keep the non-Bitcoin related post out of the main forum.

It was routinely referred to as the "Alt Trashcan" by the mods.

Not all mods disliked the Alt Forum

Saltyspittoon and Maged were Alt friendly.

I guess you could throw Tysat into that category also.

It's just the hypocricity which pisses me off, that's all.
Giveaways were bringing a lot of people in this forum.
Instead of doing something to improve the section, they banned giveaways. They're now allowed only in the shitty gambling section. (Big % of advertisers are casinos, keep that in mind Wink )

They could've just have 1-2 active mods who would lock the topic when the giveaway would end or simply send it to the trashcan.

Altcoins offer valuable competition to Bicoin!

Without altcoins it would be hard to move forward and improve Bitcoin.

Clonecoins should be destroyed though as they are rediculous, though!

What makes you think this hasn't been implemented yet?  Grin

It looks like some cheap copy of BTCT.

How does the look matter? In the end, it is all SMF.
What matters is the quality of participants attracted to it.
That is why I think any alt forum is destined to fail.

Exactly. A few years back the section was more decent, but now it has gone beyond a point of no return. We tend to completely ignore the section (aside from those that moderate it).

Interesting idea. Someone else could try this. I don't think that theymos would be interested in this as it would have a negative impact on his (already) limited time. In addition the staff would be required to either operate on both forums or an additional team would have to be chosen (which adds to the complexity and impact on time).

But that spam is keeping this forum going.
No really. You would see this place 'rot' within a few days if the staff took a break. The forum would be fine without that section. The other sections are what matters (well some of them).

Just look at the forum sections. Which sections are the most active? Alt ones.
Again, the quality over quantity.

How many ad impressions are generated through the altcoin sections?
I don't have access to this kind of information.

You're the one who does not understand the situation properly. I can't talk for all of the staff members, but the majority still hate altcoins. Do you know why they have a little corner for themselves? So that we can ignore them more easily. The quantity of the posts does not mean anything and I can assure you that a minimum of 95% of the posts there are rubbish (don't get me started on the coins).
Like I mentioned in my previous comment, above yours.
I know there have been forum rule violations, and that there's a shitload of spam. But that spam is keeping this forum going.

Just look at the forum sections. Which sections are the most active? Alt ones.

How many forum campaigns forbid (exclude payments for specific section. In this case, altcoin one) users post in alt sections? Can't think of any.

Additionally the section consists out of a lot of people that can't cope with missing the "Bitcoin train" and are hoping to profit a lot in the future.

Bitcoin can never be big enough to be the dominant world currency and replace all fiat.
That's not relevant to OP. Altcoins can create their own forums.

Just put the altcoin section in your ignore board and the problem will disappear.
This. I don't recall the last time that I've went there, unless there were some posts to be deleted.
