How far do people go to feed a gambling addiction?

In this story we have a young bank teller, 28 years old lady, who stole 28,000$ from four different elders who were suffering from health and cognitive problems. Her goal was to fuel a gambling addiction, as presented by the defense at the court.

Families must be attentive to their elders when going to the bank and dealing with money in general. Scammers and thieves are everywhere and always ready to take advantage of the vulnerability of such individuals at an advanced age.
when you've gotten to the stage where you can comfortably steal money from a sick person to fulfill whatever desire you crave for, you're a big thief and nothing more. Let's not paint this whole thing with a narrative that seams as though they did these things because they are addicted to gambling or whatever, if you can't understand that regardless of what's going on with you upstairs, you should never steal From someone that's having health challenges it means that you have a big issue.

When people are caught with regards to a crime they've committed knowingly, it's usual to hear stories like this coming up that paint a narrative that they are either addicted to a substance that led them to carrying out the act or that they are facing one psychological problem to Like being addicted to gambling and that's why they committed that act. Anyone that steals should be made to face the consequences that comes with it and it should never be attributed to gambling as a possible course.

It's true that many hardcore gambling addicts are stealing money and scamming other people in order to feed their addiction. It's not just the gambling addicts, many drug addicts are doing this as well. This is a problem, which cannot be solved. The people with addictions will keep committing crimes.
It's ridiculous how her lawyer is using her gambling addiction as an excuse in the court. Being addicted doesn't take away the blame.
I guess that this woman was pretty stupid, since she got caught. Working as a bank teller and stealing money from bank accounts is so dumb.

The woman may just use gambling addiction as an excuse so that she will also be seen as a victim of gambling to lighten the sentence she will get, but in fact, she is really a thief, because for some reason I think a gambling addict would not put much thought into committing theft to get money to finance her gambling addiction. After all, an addict often doesn't have a clear mind, because in the article she looks carefully to choose the victims, she doesn't just choose victims carelessly, meaning she thinks hard so that her actions are not detected, is it possible that an addict can do that? I doubt it, but what is clear is that she was a criminal and acted stupidly so he lost her job and ended up in prison.

Its bad of the bank teller to do such a thing, that's why it is not good to employ a gambling addict to any financial institution because such person can make any firm to go bankruptcy. And again people who has physical challenges or deformity in any kind should stay clear of the bank or any monitory organisation because such person may be scammed. It's better a physically challenged or an elderly person who doesn't see well to go to the bank or any financial institutions with a someone who is not deformed or old so as to assist him in whatsover thing. Because this teller case is an eye opener to those who may be prone to scam in any organisation. This is to say that any challenges someone may find him or herself may be used against the person if he or she met a scammer.

To the extent that we will never expect that they'd do something like that. I've read tons of the same story about employees robbed their companies fund for their gambling addiction.

This one has no heart as well, robbed the elderly that has health problems. There's no conscience with what this teller did.

Only time will tell on where that person will be picked up. The punishment is there but the damage has been done already.
What kind of conscience are you writing about here when it comes to severe gambling addiction? There are very few people who can cope with this. I was one of these years ago, but I managed to overcome this craving. Now I play sometimes, but I know the limits of my actions and money. I don’t go beyond what is permitted, as I perfectly understand the consequences.

Yes, it is incredibly bad that funds were stolen from elderly people. This is unacceptable by definition. I hope that the state will compensate for this damage or the money will be returned in other ways.

I think the bank should give back what is stolen from those old people. I mean, if that stolen funds happened inside the bank then it should still be charged to them. It's their mistake and the employee/bank teller is a part of them.

She left before everything was discovered but still, they found her and made her answer for all her mistakes. Imagine that, just $28,000+ and you will be jobless, imprisoned, and wasting your life behind bars. I don't think that is worth it even if you are a gambling addict. She should've thought about her future first and she could still feed her gambling activities while she had the job. Maybe she got broken way too far that she thought there was no way of getting back up. So wrong.

If we talks about how far people overcome a gambling addiction, that will depends on how good he can realizes that he have a problem in gambling. If he can not realizes with his addiction, he will never overcome his gambling addiction and even he will becomes too deeper in gambling. Other people can not helps him to overcome his gambling addiction because he deny that he already gets addicted to gambling.

It needs awareness from that person to realizes his gambling addiction. If that person stole much money from customers, she had a big problem in gambling addiction and she must go to the rehabilitation center to cures her gambling addiction. We don't knows how deep her gambling addiction because that she needs to be check by the professional from the rehabilitation center.

She needs to gets helps before she ruins her lives and commit a suicide because suicide will be her last thing that she can thinks to ends her problem. Her family must asks her to go to rehabilitation center and gets helps to cure her gambling addiction.

Of course, she is a sick person, but the whole question is, will the judge in the subsequent trial consider that she is guilty or that her illness is a factor that can mitigate the punishment? You know, people who suffer from various types of addictions cannot always understand the meaning of their actions and manage them. These people are driven by one emotion, which is so violent and all-consuming that the person cedes control of his actions to this emotion. People often live in a fictitious, illusory world in which there are only positive emotions and this is the world of slot machines, roulette and sports betting. It can be difficult for them to escape from this world.

There's a problem from both the family members of the elders and the bank teller herself.

As a family member, you must support and help your elder relative whenever they will go to the bank. At least get yourself updated on their money or whatever it is since they have cognitive problems already. As for the bank teller, this is what I always see whenever I see an addicted gambler. They will do everything just to have money to be used in gambling. Well, I guess her addiction to gambling will lead her to get jailed, and aside from that, it also ruined her professional career.

Overall, let's take care of our money because we don't know what these thieves can do to our money. As for the bank teller, I hope that she learned from this mistake, and whatever happens, I hope she will not do it again.

It's crazy what addicted people handling money will do.

I wouldn't even want to think about working as a bank teller and being addicted to gambling. The job gets easy with experience but it'd be impossibly stressful. Thinking about not grabbing money and going away all the time.
Any teller these days would know they'd be caught very fast after stealing any amount of cash.

On the other hand it's also important to remember that people who are addicted need help. It would have been ok in my view for him to be given leave so he can receive treatment at least before he stole. After stealing however there's not many solutions other than letting such people go.

There could be worst as we've seen news of gamblers leaving this small kids in a hot car and go to gamble in land base casinos.

In this case, it's really a breach of trust as the teller carefully selected his victims, stole their money without their knowledge. But we all know that this crime can't be hidden and sooner or later it will be unravel just like in this case. And the women should suffer the consequences, gonna be a wake up call for her, but it's too late already to remorse. But she is still young so she has a lot of time to think in the jail and what life she wanted to when she goes out and hopefully that is not to gamble again.

Oh I must say this is still pretty light in terms of how far people can go lol. Even taking lives can be a simple thing at some point when you're addicted, let alone stealing from old people. I must say though the system of the bank must be pretty bad for a teller to have access to transfer rights lol. Afaik there should at least be a confirmation, using whatever methods possible, from the owners themselves or something similar.

Sheesh, while this might be true and it can happen due to severe addiction but i'll side with the others that gambling addiction is just for reasoning out to lesser the sentence only if its applicable by their law.
Does that even work as a defense? In terms of hoping for a lighter sentence? Not familiar with how judges decide on their rulings but I don't think that'd even make sense? Especially since I reckon addiction would have at least some semblance of proof. In this case maybe a casino account with countless transactions daily as a measure to show addiction?

That's essential for a family member to monitor financials towards their relatives who's vulnerable to this certain cases of theif activity. That's totally unacceptable and to the bank teller possessed with crime it should be held liable for that wrong doings. Scammers not just experienced through online banking but also those with direct connection to the physical bank, because inside job always tend to exist, much worst when their devilish action would take advantage to elderly customers who became their prey.
Being vigilant is very essential nowadays, everyone shouldn't be lenient about this scenario, many reasons could provoke a person to do a crime and gambling is one of the common reason aside from other aspects like drugs or whatever.

That's how traditional banking with centralized system can take advantage of their users' money. I don't know if the company will take the liabilities and refund the stolen money but this is highly unlikely to happen and that's how shitty to trust banking system.

Oh no! That’s really terrible, really!
Like, how do people manage these debit to credit systems and hope that, they wouldn’t come by some trouble. Even in the event of a win, you’ll still get query to have debit the money in the first place. The customer is sure getting an alert and it goes into history which is questionable. I guess the teller wouldn’t care, after all, they won and have got the money replaced.

This is clearly a don’t. Having to gamble more than you can afford to lose and clearly with money that isn’t yours. Worst of all, she lost this money! I’m guessing it ain’t her first time, having to do this with not just one party but, several other elderly persons, she must have got away with a few, such nerve!

There are no limits for gambling addicts (or any other addiction that requires spending a lot of money, such as drugs or alcohol) in what they can do to get the most money in the quickest way possible to meet their addictive needs, even if the risk costs them the loss of what is most precious to them. This may be a simple case because the bank will pay the amounts to those affected and will later deduct it from the employee’s salaries, but we have seen in other cases how some addicts dare to steal their relatives’ money, deprive their families of the necessities of life, or borrow with guarantees that they do not have the right to dispose of.

The bank also bears part of the responsibility since it did not choose its employees well by not verifying the psychological qualifications of employees in sensitive tasks (treasury, custmers assets) and did not adopt procedures to monitor the daily activities of employees on its systems. This woman would not have transferred these amounts except because she knew that there was no supervision over her, and the evidence for this is that one of the victim customers was the one who discovered the theft.

Since the accused is a woman, I do not rule out the hypothesis that the story of gambling addiction was fabricated by the lawyer after accusing the employee of embezzlement in the hope that she would receive a reduced sentence considering her state of mind (a gambling addict). But this remains dependent on the lawyer’s ability to prove this with evidence that the court can believe.

OMG, realized that it's a woman, ..........

How far do people go to feed a gambling addiction?
There are no limits, never ending if you can still move freely. Move freely in the sense of being healthy and not being imprisoned. because, even though they no longer have a penny, as long as they still have the ability to walk and breathe and can still use their brains and hands to gamble, they definitely have a thousand ways to get money, no matter what.

There are many criminal cases committed due to addicted gambling. Not only direct crime, but fraud, online loans, extortion of family or other people, and various other bad things in order to get money for gambling, these are the dangers if you are addicted.
Even worse, they will sell or risk anything to be able to continue gambling. This is perverse and uncontrollable.

And the things that can make them stop are:

1. Very serious pain, both physically and spiritually
That's just when they have recovered and not received addiction rehabilitation, there is a chance they will return to gambling again. Unless they are totally sick until the end of their lives.

2. Imprisoned
Yes, it's good that they commit crimes to make money and prison is one way to stop it. But the thing is, not all prisons guarantee that there is no gambling in them, right? and there is no guarantee that after leaving prison for a few years, they will not return to gambling, there is no guarantee for that.

3. Enter rehabilitation and there is regular and significant monitoring.
This requires very high efforts, for families and related parties to control gambling addiction. Usually, in every country there is an agency that is authorized to deal with this. So, it's best, before it's too late, there is awareness (this is really difficult), from the family to carry out rehabilitation and special treatment for addicted gamblers.

Ah, how difficult it is, even though there are theories regarding how to stop addicted gambling, in reality it is not that easy in practice.
As stated in this article, in theory, this is very easy and can be implemented. However, it won't be that easy to put it into practice. However, that doesn't mean that all efforts will not be successful. There are also cases where addicted gamblers really try hard to stop and they succeed.

How in the world did she think she was going to get away with that lol.  I know addiction is strong but you can't be that stupid.  Even if she won with that money you know there is a 99.999% chance you are getting caught, losing all of it and then spending years in jail.  Stupid people win stupid prizes.

I am not buying the story of gambling addiction. The manner of the theft looks way too calculated and the fact that she was able to repay the entire amount stolen when caught doesn't suggest she was a gambling addict. This looks like a ploy the defense team is using to get a lesser sentence.

On the other side, this case shows how unreliable the centralized banking system truly is. You cannot verify and have to trust the system which is run by humans.
I would agree on you. Gambling addiction was only made as an escape, but most probably this teller has already been stealing way back before but it's only at the moment that she was caught. Although some would also resort into having mental disorders just to fuel their gambling addiction, but I just feel this case is different. The teller has no other motives but to steal the money, but not actually intended for gambling purposes.

This only proves that there is no 100% security of our funds in centralized banks. If it's not made with some system errors, those humans inside the bank premises are actually to be blamed.
