I am using Bitdefender antivirus free edition since 2013, pretty satisfied with it.
I use Linux
I use Bitdefender, it works fine for me and stable
being careful and avoiding any suspicious files is a good start, using a good antivirus is important too, avast, nod32 and avira are good.
Avast or Avira + MalwareBytes, but even then there are plenty of trojans, worms etc. So viruses defending is not an easy task

NOD32 and Kaspersky are the strongest and most effective IMO
avira is easy to use and has a free version

i use malware bytes and got a free premium key from some googling skills, im sure you can get one for free too.
fos me, avast works the best
i am running ubuntu, so don't need an antivirus
