ETH has almost always been mentioned here and I couldn't agree more. It's definitely more stable than BTC and is generally on a slow uptrend.
I think you should just check the ICO s, a bit risky but you can get a lot of margin once it starts to take off. Bitcoin s price is very high at the moment. You might wanna check Shift it has a great potential

Everybody has thought like you, they want to profit by buying very low price and sell high.
But its difficult to find stable coin at very low price. If very low price, we will think it not stable.
As reference, i will choose to buy etherium as their price stable.

The best investment aside from Bitcoin are Ethereum and Neo. These are my coins that I hold for long term, agree coinmarketcap is also good to check the best coins to invest. In current situation NEO and Waves are the best options, both are opponent of ethereum. Waves interface is great. NEO is backed so much by Chinese. Smart contracts will make them great.
the problem with that is Chinese knows how to play well in the market so Neo can pumped high and dumped as well too hard, its better to keep reading there's a lots of quality coin which can be profitable in long run who can move side by side with bitcoin.
