I just stick to old altcoins like ltc, eth or xmr. And hopefully by 2018, it's time for them to be worth more. I'm looking for profits but don't want to risk too much. Investing in a newcomer (which did not appeal to me), to me was frightening

I agree with you, best alt coin to invest ever is Eth and their tokens. Pretty, my advice take a look at SNT token, on ICO gathered 100m $
Nobody knows exactly which alt coins are good or not, but there are different very nice coins and tokens, but just analyze the coinmarketcap there are much one

I would say the best altcoin to invest in right now for a longer term hold would be ethereum. Nice and stable growth, solid platform and following. Definitely a lot of upside.
I think there are several coins with a large potential for 2018,
The top two for me are DeepOnion and Waves,
DeepOnion is setting a new bar for privacy, look at coins such as Monero and Dash and you can see where DeepOnion is heading in terms of price.
Waves has a very solid roadmap for 2018 and has a working and tested product, its also just crashed in value so is a perfect time to pick up a few hundred at a bargain.

I think the best altcoin to invest is waves coin because for sure this coin will increase more the price in the future and for aure if you have a lot of waves coin in your wallet you can earn a lot of profit or chances you become a millionaire person. Because waves coin possible become hundreds dollars price in the future. But if you undecided to buy waves yoi can make a research so you can see if its potential or not.
Ptoy has very unique real-world project and very cheap right now...
I have some few alt coins to hold know as I've sold most of them just for the upcoming hard fork. I'm not a bitcoin cash before but it's pumping so I would go for it.
And also I will always be an ETH fanatic now and the timing is good today because it was lower than before and I guess it will go lower at the moment when bitcoin hits $7,500 soon.

I think all depends on which scenario we will have after the fork. There a lot of good project out there, many alts have a great team and roadmap, but the strong growth of bitcoin that is putting pressure. I think we should till the end of 2017 to predict more accurately.

In my view, the most suitable altcoin to invest in 1 year is ETH. The price is so low now, and you can buy it and wait until it recover. 
Dont think it will recover so strong untill it goes pos,and no one can tell for sure when pos will come since they are moving the dates all the time.But yeah i agree eth is good coin for long term and dont see it going lover to much then nowIn addition waves, ark, electroneum, bitcoin cash and bitcoin gold are those altcoins who have potential to surpass the ethereum coin in the future

LINK, SYS (masternodes coming mid november), DIVI are some that you should follow for 2018. There's quite a lot more, but these should be interesting.
Link (and at a great buying opportunity now!) and in particular Eidoo. Eidoo is already better than any other ethereum wallet (just my opinion of course....), imagine it with the decentralized exchange on top which devs are going to add next year, and then imagine it with support for non erc20 tokens as well... this is a projects which is going to change the way people invest in cryptos, perhaps making things even too easy for the standard user who does everything with his phone.

I've heard a lot about Confideal.Think you should try it because it's a unique smart contract creating environment powered by smart contracts constructor, cryptocurrency payments, and even a digital arbitration system to work out the right judgements on unclear matters related to smart contracts performance.
In my view, they are ETH, Ripple and OmiseGo. These are also great coins to invest. Although altcoins are dropping some weeks ago. But these coins are developing with good target. They will increase soon.
