My opinion, at the moment BTC is best suited for short-term profit. Because from the bottom it repels clearly stronger than the altcoins. Need to choose the good moments.
In my opinion, Bitcoin is good not only for a short time investment but also for a long-term investment as well. Also, you can split your investment into few parts to split the risks.

No one can say what coin will give you back enough profit. It can depends on many factors, the investors, the miners if is still mineable coin, the interest of new people who invest in that coin. You can also choose more than one coin to invest, and watch the prics and wait until you think you get enough profit.

$3000 for 1 ETH? Impossible! Who told you that?Divide $1000 into some parts. For instance: 20% can go to ETH (coz I believe it's a good investment), 30% can be invest in XRP (which is really low now, and is trading at $0.53, according to coin360). The rest can be invested in BTC as the most stable coin. You don't need to spend the whole amount on 1 coin.
