Dota 2 is probably my favorite multiplayer game from this generation
Dota 2 is probably my favorite it is super deep in terms of the game play. It is also super fun and can be very competitive if your in to that.
I alpha tested Auto Club Revolution and it's quite kewl.

Gmod is great for multi player, there are so many modes to choose. Also its absolutely fantastic with friends! 
Minecraft is still amazing, but new games like Starmade are taking it to the next level. Also check 7 Days to Die, is a zombie survival with high end graphics and you can destroy the terrain and build anything just like in Minecraft. This game is so damn addictive once you get the basics.
I just finished checking out a couple videos of '7 Days to Die'. It does seem like a modern, up to date version of Minecraft, but I wouldn't call it the 'best multiplayer game' out there. Still, if you like Minecraft, this is probably a game you'll want to check out.

Personally, I think Killzone series is the best multiplayer, but CS will obviously have an excellent and active multiplayer community.

Leauge is far less complex than DoTA. I play DoTA and I was mediocre at best, played LoL, went 40-3 over the course of 3 online games.LOL is where is at
I want to see why people view LoL as amazing, because I obviously can't.
