The best old school game for me is FIFA 2001. That was the game.

They released the source code to the game in 2002. Someone took that and made The Ur-Quan Masters. A remake of the original with some additions. It's at version 0.70 but "The only missing game feature at present is namable savegames". So now you can try winning it again. If you can cope with those graphics.
