Gotta love the ASCII. Eh, wouldn't buy Rogue Legacy for $15.

Depends on the system..

on the Atari 2600 Ms Pac-Man and Yars Revenge still hold up
on Intellivision - Lock 'n Chase, BurgerTime, AD&D are very good
NES - there's many just depends on your taste Smiley

I was always a big Flight Sim guy.

I loved Red Baron by Sierra/Dynamix 1990.
I've had just about all the Microsoft Flight Simulators.

From NES I would say Ninja Turtles Arcade was great.
SNES I recall playing a lot of Joe & Mac and really enjoying it.
N64 Wayne Gretzky 3D Hockey, MarioKart and of Course... Smosh Bros.
Xbox I thought Return to Castle Wolfenstein, specifically for the online gameplay, was the best there ever has been. I've yet to play another online FPS that requires everyone to work as a team for victory. If everyone is a medic they can constantly heal, but they'd run out of ammo, and vice versa for the Lt. I really wish they would just make a brand new one and base it off the maps and gameplay. Bring back elimination as well.

I miss RTCW soooo much! It's one of my all-time favorite games. I played the pc version. The 'Penguin' server held matches with up to 64 players. I played RTCW: Enemy Territory after that and I even went on to play Quake Wars, but it wasn't quite the same. You should try 'Heroes and Generals'. It's not as good as RTCW was, but still pretty good and F2P.

Have you tried any of the recent modern classics on Steam?

Rogue Legacy  (Amazing randomized dungeon crawler)
La Mulana ("LOL, fuck you.  - a metroidvania adventure" should be the game's tag line)
Castle in the Darkness (excellent fantasy metroidvania)
Shovel Knight (mega man style fantasy platformer)
Axiom Verge (about to be released super metroid on steroids)

Haven't tried these. Rogue Legacy looks interesting. How does it compare to Dungeon Crawl?

The real "classics" would have to be games that started genres on their own, like Quake, Silent Hill, GTA III, Half-Life, Starcraft, Legend Of Zelda, Mario, Pac-Man, Star Wars KotOR, etc.

Starcraft came many years after Warcraft I and the first Command & Conquer.

FF4 (SNES version, ditch the remakes; a little cheesy at times but so frickin' epic, incredibly fitting music)
FF6 (need I even comment?)       (SNES version of course!)

The rest are mere games, but very good:

FF Tactics (PS; best strategic battles)
Dragonquest 3 (the SNES remake; fun, great use of randomness)
Dragonquest 4 (NES; best RPG of this type)
Dragonquest 8 (PS2; fun, long, graphic style ages well)
Soul Blazer (SNES; cute, fun, feel-good action-RPG)
Secret of Mana (SNES; fun, neat Bali-inspired music)
Lost Odyssey (XBOX; spiritual successor to Final Fantasy, emotionally powerful and "makes you a better person" (like FF4/FF6))
SMB3 (duh)
Super Mario World (duh)
Super Dodgeball (NES; hugely fun game back in the day, especially 2-player)
Kickle Cubicle (NES; obscure sleeper hit, great puzzle game, makes you smarter)
Zelda 3 (duh)
Tetris Attack (SNES; dumb name, absolutely classic game, nothing to do with Tetris, makes you smarter)
Dungeon Crawl (free PC game but feels old skool/roguelike, extreme hardcore, ultra-addictive, can play for years)
Super Bomberman (SNES; fantastic party game, never found a better game for 3-4 players besides maybe Mario Kart battle mode)
Twin Seeds 2 (obscure free PC "bullet hell" game)
Street Fighter 2 (arcade original version and Champion Edition; after that they fell off a lot; need a very good joystick)
