This is difficult to assess.

The two times I shorted it for fiat (small fractions, actually) I got squeezed. In the second time I even said it was a offering to appease Karhu. We cant know for sure that sell and buy back at a lower price is a good strategy, at least for me it didnt work.

Better is to buy with spare money, and holding what you already have, even if you are bleeding. Because we all know for sure that, long term, bitcoin will rise to 100k and beyond.

Bitcoin currently is less than 1% of global GDP, so the potential for growth is enormous, and even if you lose for some weeks or months, you know that this is temporary, due to the fundamentals. That's why so many bears burn in this market.

The best strategy, then, is to buy and hold, and buy more when its down.

It would be a smart move to hold the coins for now as you can see that the bleeding of the coins is mot mostly due to any technical glitches but due to the fact that many of the top tier cryptocurrencies are facing backlash from many of the world political powers and international governments, these conflicts are on the verge of being resolved.

Seriously in 2017 we are still debating trading strategies. The best traders make a lot of money, they tend to be algorithms, experienced traders or lucky traders. The vast majority lose money or coins. The best strategy is HODL.
Lol yeah holding is the best strategy. i'm a long term holder, i won't sell below $10k hehe, i know it's gonna take time i can wait...

I've not seen a huge price plunge in a long while so I think I wouldn't even try buying and then selling. With buying and selling, there is always the risk of the price getting much higher after you just sold, making it harder to buy more bitcoins. I'm more comfortable just increasing my saved up bitcoins and holding on to them through crest and trough. After all my primary goal with bitcoin is not just to make a handsome profit but to be more secure so I'd definitely pick a smaller "profit" from the value increasing over a potential larger profit. If I want to make more bitcoins, I'd just try trading rather than converting them to fiat.

JBED: Just Buy Every Dip. It never falls to work. That is what I have been doing for years now, and bitcoin always ends up delivering bigger gains, it's really easy to make money with bitcoin, just buy and never sell, in 10 years you will be a boss.

buy and hold strategy is always going to be working! you can never regret buy and hold. we can see these days that even if you were such a bad trader or had bad luck to buy on the exact top in 2013 you still haven't lost anything! although holding that long and not sell+buy-back is a bit silly.

but when you buy and sell or better say sell and buy back again, you have to be always prepared to live with the consequences of missing out and try to come up with ways of covering the possible loss that you will experience because of that.

Guys, i always bought & sold and bought back. With this strategy I made quite some nice profit. Big dumps like before less likely  (PBOC defeated, no Gox anymore, increasing demand etc ) . So maybe it it time to change my strategy to buy & hold + buy more After the ETF dicision I will stop selling my coins for a couple years at least. What do you guys think ?
The only one good advice I can give you - be adaptive. That all what is needed. You said that you had success with your buy while low and sell while high.
So why do  you want to change that now? It is not like we won't have volatility in bitcoin anymore, short period of stability isn't definitive proof of that.
Wait for SEC's decision, be quick if ETF will be approved you might want to buy fast until price is still low.

neither for me, i'm more of a generate and hold and never sell and just use your coin to pruchase what you want

i guess if you are a good trader you can do buy and sell, but not now in a bull market, would be a suicide, unless you are so brave and lucky to hit every little fluctuation to the bottom....
Wow means you never sell your coins? It was quite unique because not many people using bitcoin only to buy necessities. But I agree with you say that the only good traders do buy and sell. Maybe if someone did buy & hold + buy more I'm sure they do in the long term, or maybe for investment. If you do buy and sell now indeed very little profits because prices always go up, but it still can be done because bitcoin is still fluctuating just not full profits.

the buy and hold strategy is good but i don't call it best, it is the easiest for sure because not everyone has the time or the nerves to start trading day to day and take the risks of price fluctuation against his expectations.

and right now, not that much is different just because ETF is around! when ETF news comes and goes on 11th we can see another thing replace ETF and then another thing replace that and then China again and so on.

Not yet , i buy back on 11 march , all part of the strategy. After that i hold for the coming years to come. Now i must wait till 11 march. A bit risky but we will see.

Good luck with that.

If the ETF is approved the price will probably rise abruptly before anyone without inside information even hears about it. You might never see these prices again.

Of course if it's rejected the price will dip abruptly before anyone has a chance to react, creating a panic and a great buying opportunity.

The difference is that the dip will be temporary. Before long the price will rise again to much higher than it is now.

My strategy is to hold and wait, but try to reallocate some funds for March 11. If the ETF is rejected, buy the dip. If it's approved, wait for the mega-rally to run its course and buy the inevitable correction which will follow.

best and most complete answer that i have read so far in all the ETF related posts that i have been reading.

because you can make more coins while traiding. That means higher profit on the long term when you do it right. But it also includes higher risks. Thats why it is good to compare the different strategies with each other.
Everything there is always a risk, I think, as long as the bitcoin user is optimistic with the future, then prices will always go up, this is because the fixed stock and demand rises. I am still optimistic, hold bitcoin for 2 years again is the best method and still profitable.

Yes, that's why buy and hold for a while is a good decision. In general : bitcoin won't fail, we believe in bitcoin and always support iyaa the king of cryptocurrency. So, you won't regret to buy more and more bitcoin, the option is when will be the right time to buy? Before the rise and buy on the dip obviously. Why we should sell at $1200 instead of hold and wait until the price reach $2000-5000-$10,000? Depends on everyone strategy, but I prefer to hold as much as I can.

The safest strategy still is to buy hodl and buy more. You have little risk doing it. But if you can afford to lose some bitcoins, you can risk doing buy and sell. If you can time the market right, you will have plenty of profits. But if you timed it wrong and you sold on a bull  and never got back down, your money is trapped. What I do is I have some funds for long term hodl, and some funds I can play on trading.

The buy and hold strategy is the best, but i`m too afraid to hold my bitcoins for a long time.
Anything can happen, someone can hack my wallet or Localbitcoins account or i might forget my password because i`m stupid. Grin

You don't really keep your bitcoins in an online wallet or at an exchange, do you?

Always keep your coins safely offline in paper wallets. If you never expose your private keys to the internet, your coins can never be stolen.

...I sold everything yesterday...

You have my deepest sympathy. Better buy back as soon as possible before the price continues to skyrocket.

Next time, don't sell, hold. Selling is a sucker's game.

My personal strategy right now is all coming down to playing the market and buying when it goes low, selling when it goes high and hoping that I never really get caught out in a bad position.

So far it has been working relatively well, but since there is a bit of a downtrend right now I'm exploring more shorting options.

I don't know how effective it's going to be, but so far I'm not poor so that's nice.
