Cockfighting is a gambling not only in that country(Philippines) but even in Europe and many countries in Asia and Even in Latin America .

Meaning this is a popular kind of gambling in which Philippines find a best way to extend the gaming in Online.

I'm sure that even how many legislator will oppose on this yet there are much more to favor because this is not an Illegal gambling .
Maybe right now, cockfighting has become a popular gambling game in other countries, especially when the internet can help the gambling provider to expand their business using the internet. That games start as traditional gambling games in Asia, especially the Philippines and other Asia countries.

The regulator needs to have strict rules to protect the young people joining because young people are susceptible to becoming addicted. Maybe people above 20 years or so can bet on cockfighting but not for people below 20 years.

It is not a question whether it is popular or not because we all know that this game has been with us many centuries ago. It's a question on how it affected society in general specially in the country. The government initially try to fight illegal drugs and then illegal gambling and yet they allowed some big shot just Atong Ang to proliferate this online sabong in the last year because of the pandemic? I think the government really have to look at it as many families are being destroyed because individuals are losing big money in this sports.

I think there is a bigger personality behind Atong Ang. I see him as just a pawn in this gambling network in the Philippines. Remember that his name has been crapping up even during the Estrada administration and up to know he is still on the (illegal) gambling business. So for me, there is a someone that is strong backing up Atong Ang so it is hard to stop this new pandemic in the pandemic in the Philippines even though Cayetano is trying to fight it out.

true. some of these bigger personalities ruled a huge region in the country and even the country itself like Joseph Estrada. Chavit Singson and Manny Pacquaio is known for sabong too. Cayetano is really not prepared for this bigger fight since he isn't backed and the would-be president Marcos is a good friend of Singson's.

the article is also saying the adoption of online wallets, does anyone think crypto will be adopted soon?

That is what I'm trying to say, this kind of online games, they are several politicians that are benefiting from it not just Atong Ang.

So if Cayetano has a clear and good intention, but if there will be politicians going to talk him out, then mostly likely nothing will happen to it and maybe this is just a political gimmick on Cayetano's end.

[Nope]No hype delivers more than hope
Cockfighting is indeed more favored by traditional gamblers and considers it a tradition, when in fact it is not. This also happens in my area, where people with low incomes who do not even support their daily needs often bet on cockfighting arenas just to seek luck.

But as far as I know, there is no gambling site that mediates cockfighting hobbyists to bet online in my country.

I am a fan of cockfighting. I enjoy this new online cockfighting. I was able to withdraw a number of times although I am still losing big. But I am attracted to this kind of gambling.

However, I also support 100% if this is completely abolished. This has indeed grown into the level of a pandemic in this country. This is slowly eating away the very foundations of individual and family values. I have seen first hand how a local policeman is losing big and becomes irritable, family broken, very young daughter left with separated parents, properties sold, savings exhausted, and so on because of this kind of gambling.

I like this online cockfighting but I've also seen how this is destroying lives. This is better stopped.

Just like what some other users have said that the bill won't progress as there are too many politicians who are into this business but IMO Cayetano have a point but he should have known that this business has been in the Philippines for a long time though not online but still it affects many Filipino lives.

The only bad thing about this online sabong is that ordinary people can gamble any time of the day wherever they may be, too convenient for them to push the bet button.

I assume based on my comprehension on OP's thread that the said problem arises or become more visible to a law maker because of the pandemic where even in the state of scarcity the citizen still manage to bet on an online gambling site and worst thing is that it ruined many lives as it also said that many have been indebted. But seems that the bill won't progress if there are many politicians that are also into this business, this would be a big conflict on the implementation of the law. I think the law maker must focused on age requirements of those who can legally involved in this kind of activities even if it is online or in-person because I think it is more alarming knowing that there might be those minors that can easily access the site.

betting online cockfight has become the new pandemic
This is really interesting, where in fact this cockfighting is one of the traditional bets that is always in the area around me. And they had to do it in secret. Not so much as the cockfighting event was finally dispersed by the police and they were arrested. Yes, gambling is prohibited in my country. But the gambling of cockfighting is like never ending. Likewise with various other gambling.
especially now that there are so many online gambling that can be done so that it will be safer and there is no need to worry anymore about being chased by the officers.

government is also earning from these betting firms which is why its becoming a usual to approve bills.
should the government risk the teens today knowing that cockfighting arenas can routinely operate everyday online?

The government needs money in this pandemic the economy is still down because of the lockdown and this kind of gambling and the taxes and revenues it generated helped the government to sustain the needs of the government to provide basic service I don't think they will limit, gambling is legal in the Philippines and they can only warn people from the harmful effects of gambling and it's citizen are known to engage to a lot of gambling legal and illegal.
Those only for legalized gambling activities but for those illegal then taxes couldnt really be possible and this is a never ending kind of hunt because even on a country which do allows gambling legally there would be still platforms or places which whom decide to run it illegally because they dont like to pay up taxes and how much more into those who prohibits out?
Also as part of culture then this is something hardly cant be stopped no matter what government would do so because they cant monitor out 24/7.

There's advantage of approving the bill as the government can get cut from it.
But this may encourage gamblers to play without limits. But it is their money anyway.
So in short, it is still depends on the gambler himself how he will control his betting activities.
But maybe the lawmaker just want to prevent small time bettors to be addicted with this gambling game.

^ The problem is here, they must filter their clients, cockfighting online is good but if there is a minor age which is not good.
Besides their country will benefit from it through collecting tax and I think there is a reason their government will stop it. The cause of the proposal could be due to the near election, just to have propaganda on the platform but the fact, even on itself won't be able can stop on this kind of betting game.
However, this has been a tradition of their country and even their government banned it people will always looking find a way just to escape.

No God or Kings, only BITCOIN.
Losing a fortune in the cockfighting isn't new in the Philippines as far as I knew it and even if it hasn't gone online we already heard some news regarding that. I don't know if this could be more deep to lead on abolishing the entire cockfighting industry but as far as I'm concern there's not much to go on that direction, this industry likely to be right here for awhile even in decades to come.

You are absolutely right. This kind of spectacular and brutal fighting is already so deep in the Filipino blood that even if cockfighting were to be banned by law, it would still only take place away from the eyes of law enforcement. The authorities can't just cut this tradition out of the life of the Filipino people.
If its already part of the tradition then this is something that cant really get rid off because people would really be finding ways for them to make bets even if its means on doing underground and actually helding

those occasions wont really be that hard even though this thing do involves huge crowd based up on what i had researched and now we are on a pandemic on which health protocol should be imposed then it wont
really be allowed on the first place. So it is quite clever that they gone through online cockfight which do solves out the issue or problem on which this is a way on where they could make out bets
without trying to violate something.
More on like part of the culture already, it even existed even during the pre-Spanish era (others may disagree with me but this was just base on my research), it already existed hundred of years now. I think it wouldn't be avoided because if you are into Provinces you'd likely to expect a cockfight scene to be held during fiesta celebrations and even if it isn't permitted these gamblers will find a way not to take any hindrances.

Yes, that's the mitigation they provided, if they can't opress these violations on health protocols then better to do it online but with permissions from the government, as far as I know this is handled by PAGCOR especially the one available at GCASH (one of countries trusted mobile wallet and branchless banking service). Not new as I use this couple of times before and I just lie low due to nature of my work but this is more like a past time on my end. I guess the online cockfighting solve some issues here but if grade as bad for sure it is, since it's gamble, but it's fairly subjective to every individual if I'd be the one being asked.

He has a good point here as many are already into online gambling and if the government didn’t act, many younger people will suffer later on from addiction. Sabong has been controlled by rich people, it might be too late to have a good regulations but it can still help many. Because of this pandemic Online Sabong has been on a big market, and many can easily access and gamble, this is alarming especially younger people can easily place their bet.

I think it was allowed by the Philippine government to raise money during the pandemic.

However, it turns out to be very lucrative for the people behind as there are many Filipinos who are hooked into it and become addicted. So still just like any gambling platform, it has good and bad effects.

I'm not sure though if the bill will passed in the legislative Congress of the Philippines. There are two many powerful personalities in any gambling because of the huge money involved, just saying.

Big people are behind this so I don't think they can really take this down since many are already into this platform and we heard a lot of bad news already from this online sabong especially the recent news about scamming people because of online sabong. If they really want to control this they should have done this since then, but not its already available online so many people are already expose to it and its too late for the government to act.

Seasoned politicians always rely on building a distinctive propaganda that, when applied, hijacks a certain minority in the country, giving them the advantage of winning elections.!!!
This is what is currently happening in the Philippines, and I don't think the Philippines will give up the gains it makes through tax revenue on casinos.!!! There will also be a lot of opposition to this decision in the House of Parliament, so I think a gamble on cockfighting will go on for an unstoppable period of time.

Yes, this is most likely a pre-election attempt to get opponents of cockfighting and people not indifferent to animal cruelty issues and opponents of gambling on their side. As practice shows, politicians very often promise their supporters things that cannot be achieved. I think the cockfighting ban is just one of these things.
