There are lies, damned lies and statistics. MTwain

Most people ignore incoming whatsapp messages from unknown ID (i.e. not already on your agenda). I would never accept an inbound message from a person not already on my list, and would probably result to blocking the number altogether (straight off). I hardly even pickup calls on my landline or mobile that are not on my agenda, and those identified as private are always skipped. I'm pretty antisocial on social media, and not a spice curious as to what anybody has to offer.

If someone contacted you through WhatsApp that means you were careless with your mobile phone number, just as you are careless with your e-mail that is displayed publicly through your profile. One of the most important steps is not to make such information public, otherwise you give anyone a chance to contact you and try to deceive you in any way.
Actually whatsapp has a very stupid feature. If you join a group, everyone can see and get your number unlike telegram that can hide your number and just show your username.
I think a stranger just got OP's number through a random group he joined.

in fact this mode has long been. social media is the best platform for criminals and con artists. especially telegrams, the superiority of telegrams is a paradise for con artists. Some of my friends are victims of the Ponzi scheme, my friend got news / investment network from a YouTuber, finally he tried to buy bitcoin and invested in a cloud mining-based website, initially he tried in small amounts and the results paid, stupidly my friend tried to large amount and eventually the web disappears suddenly.

fraudsters usually look for victims who are beginners, their platforms are nothing but social media, especially in telegrams.

The scammer could also be someone who knows the OP and chatting with him with another number(you may never know). I do not think the issue is even with being careless with your mobile number or email, those can be gotten very easily this days. So many users also get such messages via telegram, and that app doesn't use Mobile number.

The issue is with the users reaction to such messages, did he or she get immediately excited and greedy so as to fall for such nonsense. If one is able to curtail his or her greed, falling for all this nonsensical scams would be almost impossible.

Bad people use all possible methods to find their potential victims, and social networks, e-mails, mobile phones are ideal platforms for modern scams. Do not share such data publicly, do not trust unknown people who contact you to make money and you will be safe.

Getting a phone number is not too difficult for the like minded people. If you are a trader, you must have joined few whatsapp trading signal groups and your phone number is easily visible. Also people can send messages on random numbers hoping to get some victims.

@Upgate I have normally seen this scam happening on Facebook and emails, but never heard people whatsapp to scam victims. Whenever you read words like double your money, or interest on your money you should immediately avoid it and I’m glad you didn’t fall for this scam.

As @Lucius has rightly pointed out you really need to get careful with your personal details, also try and find out how that scammer got your phone number.

hmph..
Easy ways to know ponzi scheme is look their interest rates. If any financial investment offer 100%, 200% or higher ROI within a month, it's just a ponzi investment. So, stay away to invest from this kind investment service.
