Hi guys, I basically had a prophetic dream vision last night, that the BFL Labs ASIC won't be shipped until February 2013 at best.

Next time you visit the future, check out the headlines for Apple's stock share price and the years biggest percentage gainers.
It would be more profitable (no pun intended).

People keep saying this, with no understanding of what a "change in the protocol" means. Performing a SHA256 hash is something that will not change.

There are ways to change the way hashes are made to break an ASIC.  ASIC is hard wired. It can't change at all. FPGA can be reprogrammed with a new bitstream. GPUs are the same. A very minor change could make a lot of expensive paperweights and would be a great way to keep bitcoin operating the way it was meant, openly accessible to virtually anyone with everyday hardware, not a bunch of elites with fancy expensive hardware. It's supposed to be run by the people, not the "1%"

Go ahead mine with you 1500+ watt 3.5GH/s setup or whatever.
3.5 GH/s running off a USB port will crush your ROI Mr. GPU man. The only hope is ASICs flopping or not being super popular.
I have some disposable cash ATM and my Preorder number means at least 500 Jalapeno's have been ordered and everyone knows that we all didn't order just 1 Jalapeno.
Get ready for something like 1.7+TH/s coming online at least. Its going to hurt.

The window is closing fast, but you can still pay off a GPU rig before the reward half (assuming BFL can't deliver a product in October) depending on your electric costs. Come July/August, then your ROI is shot to hell.

Also, judging from the 900+ orders BFL already has, I'd say they ALREADY ARE plenty popular.

Lastly, the SC preorder thread already has a listed 8.8TH/s as ordered, and that's only a known 38 out of 900+ orders. I'd guess anywhere from 100-250TH/s have ALREADY been ordered from BFL.

People who bought 1 Single only likely don't have an extra $700 around. I see many but not all updating due to expense.
Mini rig owners must drop what? 15k after just spending 15k.  Either the bitcoin community is loaded with cash or not.

When they arrive,
ASIC's will have harmed bitcoins by raising the bar for entry from everyman to specialists but only if they get heavily adopted. Buying a $200 video card will make more sense than a $150 USB coffee warmer purchase to the average person.  
The guy with 60GH/s will now wield stuff like 10TH/s because they already have cash, how do you think they bought all those GPU's in the first place.

Yeah SHA256 and SHA512 are similar enough that breaking one is likely to weaken the other significantly.

Someday it will change. Hopefully that will be many years in the future. *No* encryption is future-proof.

I get that, but if it does ever change, it'll prolly be a switch to SHA512. That's the only way I can see an ASIC being outdated.

No, SHA3, whichever candidate ends up winning.

That's 1333 MH/J, meaning we could run today's entire hashing power of the bitcoin network on 7500 W..

I am growing skeptical.

The last I had heard was 2O MH/J for FPGAs. Where is the truth ?

The current Single is 10MH/W, but is beat in efficiency by others out there - the ModMiner is 42MH/W.

The new Single is 500MH/W. It does sound unreasonable, but I'm waiting to see some actual performance numbers.

I'd be surprised if BFL really pushed the limits of whatever process they're making the ASICs on. AMD and NVIDIA are generally running on new processes that aren't well characterized, and ignore the DRC that TMSC gives them in order to make their designs smaller and faster. Barring any actual logical errors, they would likely be okay. If they do have logic errors that would require a respin, I can't imagine the company surviving.

This. Its also worth pointing out, that as far as asic designs go, a bitcoin miner would be about as simple as it gets.
