If you stay away always nothing will happen to you except regrets if possible. Be risk taker that can handle to afford the lose and make everything under control at the proper time of yours. Of course experiences will help you to mature. Without it still you are in childhood mindset. That is my opinion.
As I buy ETH will be better, the price they are reasonable for all objects and the growth rate is quite fast. ETH is now widely available in the market so please rest assured to buy and hold them.
There is no comparison in between them because many people still have faith in Bitcoin compared to Ethereum. So it depends on the person whether how much he can invest because he needs to split his into both of these two because both these coins have great chance to make money.

Bitcoin is the king of the market, all altcoin are affected by bitcoin. However, I would choose Ethereum because its price is lower than Bitcoin, and it has more advantages than Bitcoin. When bitcoin is at 10,000$ I think this is a good time to invest. and I bought at that time. and then bitcoin goes down 7000$. And you think this is the right time? No one knows in advance. You should invest when you have the courage and confidence to enter the market. I advise you to buy whenever possible. and hold it. By the end of 2018 I guess the bitcoin will probably go up 20k USD
