"On May 22, 2010, Hanyecz traded 10,000 Bitcoin for some pizza in what is widely believed to be the first real-world transaction involving Bitcoin. Each year, on May 22, Bitcoin enthusiasts all over the world celebrate "Bitcoin Pizza Day" to mark the event. Bitcoin then was worth less than a penny."

I completely forgot about this guy who made one of the most unsuccessful investments in his life. In fact, he could live on this money all his life and leave to children, grandchildren, and so on. But pizza is good too Cheesy

the day of the pizza is a historical fact for bitcoin, it was the first time it was used as a means of payment without an intermediaries! I hope that soon comes that day, I want to celebrate eating pizza!

Haha OP remember this pizza day qccepting bitcoin as payment, seriously the pizza.parlor first company to accept bitcoin are the model to follow other company to decide accepting bitcoin as payment. Thanks for tsharing his unforgetable history.
I wonder how this pizza company right now is doing. They are always mentioned in the cryptocurrency world when talking  about how bitcoin started back then. This pizza company must be well known now, and they must continue what they’ve started then, selling pizzas for bitcoin.

this story has been heard everywhere, this story is very iconic between Bitcoin and pizza. someone is willing to buy pizza by using millions of Bitcoin. if in this moment he still own those bitcoin I can imagine he is becoming a pizza entrepreneur or billionaire.
that day was very historic for bitcoin development, because at that time bitcoin was nothing. after that people believed that bitcoin had a selling price and could be used wide, it was no longer satoshi nakamoto imagination.

indeed that was absolutely the memorable day. But that was not only how he spend 10000 Bitcoin on two pizza, but also because who was the first individual to buy pizza with Bitcoin. He was the one to show the world that you can buy real stuff with virtual currencies. And through this day many multimillion-dollar companies have started accepting Bitcoin as a payment method. If it was not really you got and spend a lot of money and pizza maybe we have not been to this far.

CBS thinks so? It was established many years before CBS thought so, why do you think they chose that date. So did anyone actually watch that documentary? I only saw the excerpt shared by a few people on Twitter. The journalist kind of sounds like a typical American brash guy to be honest. I don't really know why he's so popular. But okay fair is fair he gave some exposure to Bitcoin. Guess Fomo is coming yeah?

Whenever I eat a pizza I always think about this. Right now the fees are too high and unstable. Eth would be a better bet for buying pizza and smaller things but I bought something the other day and kept running out of gas so I ended up paying $1 for a $30 transaction. It cannot be avoided yet. I don't fully understand how it all works or why exactly the rise in price excites everyone to make transactions all over the place or why that effects the fees so much.

Celebrating pizza day hoping next is altcoins can use to buy pizza as you said using bitcoin is too much expensive specially this recent price increase of bitcoin.

As a sidenote, how about celebrating the day when Altoid posted the Silkroad advertisement on Bitcointalk? I think Silkroad is more important milestone that got Bitcoin really up and running than the 10000 bitcoin pizza.

Maybe no one wants to remember that because Silkroad connotes negative feedback on bitcoin. Silkroad transactions are mostly underground. The 10K bitcoin pizza is at least a small legal transaction which is now seems hilariously expensive.

If You cannot stand of people having means for free and anonymous trade among themselves, You should reconsider being involved in crypto. Pizza day showed that Bitcoin is not worse than PayPal for purchasing pizza. Silkroad showed that Bitcoin is superior to anything else for purchasing any goods imaginable. This is why Bitcoin was created in first place, to be uncensorable and uncontrollable by the system, and You must believe in total liberty or no liberty, there is no middle ground. Computers operate on binary system, it is either 0 or 1 and nothing in between.

No, Bitcoin is not "superior" to purchase "any goods imaginable". The most efficient way to pay for most goods is simply by fiat, in electronic form like credit/debit cards, or its physical form in the form of cash.

You should not usually want to waste your Bitcoins for coffee transactions.
I agree that buying coffee is best done by using cash. But You cannot use cash to buy few grams of ganja or new Glock for your collection from the comforts of your own bedroom protected by security of internet and tor. Using cash for this purposes is hard and less secure that using bitcoin. In that matter bitcoin is more universal than cash because You still could pay for coffee using bitcoin and huge tx fees.

Is May 22 the unofficial bitcoin holiday?

CBS seems to think so.  They are featuring a discussion about bitcoin this weekend on their weekly news show 60 Minutes.  Anderson Cooper interviewed Laszlo Hanyecz for the episode, and asked him about his request to purchase pizza with bitcoin back in May, 2010.  Nine years later that's looking like a really really expensive pizza.

The show is scheduled to air this Sunday.

This surely would go down on history and for sure Hanyecz is being famous now because of it,
But we couldn't really blame him since he was one of the first bitcoin enthusiast.
I think back then we would really be excited to try and pay anything with Bitcoin since it was just new .

Why fancy the use of bitcoins in buying common commodity such as pizza and coffee which any few cents can do it. Invest your Bitcoins and hard earned cryptocurrencies in solid financial instruments that will yield a good return in the future. #BITBONDSTO is a sure way to invest your Bitcoins for a good quarterly payment than pizza.

this comment and the usual statement mentioning "most expensive pizza" is a clear indication of the major differences between people's view towards bitcoin.
in early years (like the pizza time!) people weren't thinking of bitcoin as an investment to become rich by holding it. they were instead seeing bitcoin as a currency, a decentralized one that changed their lives. and that is why 10k bitcoin was spent that easily.

Agreed, if it wasn't for Laszlo's experiment, and other early uses of bitcoin as currency we may not be here today.  It would be nice if people can see bitcoin for all it's practical aspects; ie: as a safe and secure store of wealth, and as a digital cash for everyday purchases.

At that moment, that is just like simple experiment only and nobody has expected that the price of Bitcoin right now will be at 4 digits. May 22 is a historical day for the crypto believers. I'd set the date in my calendar and will eat a pizza on that day in memory for the first commercial transaction using Bitcoin.

I have already heard that an opportunity is being prepared to pay for cryptocurrency goods, but at first I thought that it was another fake. But if it’s possible to buy on Amazon with crypto so why not pizza?
Pay cryptocurrency for your purchases? That's what I understand the progressive decision. This is very cool for those who want to monetize creative projects, such as painting, handmade goods. When I imagine that I could receive a crypto, I’m already catching on with ideas, how I could sell my goods. But buying pizza with btc would be a dream
Agree to use cryptocurrency for purchases, if it does not incur additional costs for the transaction and reverse conversion. I will follow the news, I hope that soon they will announce what kind of cryptocurrency can be used to pay
I realized that this extension takes the cryptocurrency from the user and then exchanges for a dollar and the purchase is paid. But how does usual café or supermarket itself relate to this? This is a good idea to support users who own digital assets, but it is still new, so many ppl gonna use it.
