Bitcoin: Birth of an online currency

A new anonymous digital currency that allows instant payment to anyone, anywhere. Sounds great, just not for the average consumer.

So what would it take for Bitcoin to usurp PayPal as North America's major online payment system? "They have a long, long way to go," says Williamson. "Right now, it's not clear that anyone is holding this for anything other than speculation, Money is a self-fulfilling thing; it's accepted because it's accepted and people must see it being used and think it is easy to use."

" people must see it being used and think it is easy to use"
..and that in a nutshell is bitcoin's biggest (but not only) hurdle I think.

I'm probably going to be more sporadic in my bitcoin press hits updates.
It's better that this thread is newshounded by many anyway - I seem to have taken it over a bit lately.

Bitcoin: Currency of the Future?

When bitcoin goes up in comparison to the dollar, I suppose it says that some number of people concerned about both currencies trust Mr. Nakamoto more than they trust Uncle Sam, at least for the moment.
Overall a reasonable post - but the quote above strikes me as odd. 'Trust' in Nakamoto is decidedly unnecessary because it's an open sourced system which is maintained/reviewed by many.

Really enjoyed reading this article.  Much better than a sleuth of idiotic blog posts regarding bitcoin out there.

thanks for sharing the link!

why isn't that thread no longer sticky?
and second question, maybe it's time to open a new forum bitcoin > marketing to properly collect and discuss media appearances?

i would appreciate that

No idea why this thread suddenly went un-sticky.

There's more at stake here than personal fiscal security.  The central question OWS is asking is "What kind of society should we be?  Should we value and foster community support, or let the Wall St. focus on personal fiscal security continue to destabilize our social supports?"

Bitcoin Community Takes an Interest in Occupy Wall Street

Adrianne Jeffries
2011-10-07

"The sympathies roll both ways–Occupy Wall Street has accepted donations denominated in Bitcoin since early on. "

Personally I think occupying Wall Street is silly.  It's useless to shout like this.  If you're not happy with the US currency or the banking system, just buy gold, silver or bitcoins.  It's less noisy, but much more efficient imho.

"And so with Bitcoin. I’m capitalising its name but, if it succeeds, it will join the web and the net as being slowly lower-cased into a generic existence."
