Taking a Look at Both Sides of Bitcoin

If you want to read more about Bitcoin, I recommend Gavin Andresen’s (from acm.org) presentation: “Bitcoin, the World’s First Person-to-Person Digital Currency” and the Raulo white paper: “Optimal Pool Abuse Strategy.” Regarding the various Bitcoin attack vectors, the following Defcon-19 hacking conference white paper is a must-read: “Hacking the Global Economy with GPUs, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Bitcoin.”

While the silver bitcoin thing is interesting - this author doesn't seem to understand that they're not actual bitcoins.
The article would have been much better if it was about the casascius coins.
By the time I saw this article - Erik Voorhees had already corrected him in the comments. Good to see the bitcoin media-watchdogs on the ball!

Can you summarize the outcome for those of us who don't speak French?
I added a translation of the article. There isn't yet an outcome.
The case will be heard on 18 octobre 10AM at the "Tribunal de commerce de Créteil".

The Cost of Virtual Currency

Jake Perry
2011-09-26

http://mantlethought.org/content/cost-virtual-currency

'This summer has been bookended by two fairly significant events that have put the concept of virtual money squarely back on the table. The first was the hacking of a Bitcoin (an “experimental new digital currency that enables instant payments to anyone”) account in June, and now the soft launch of Google Wallet, Google’s new Android app that turns a phone into a wallet.'

...as long as China doesn't shoot itself in the foot first.
China has been implementing a slow-motion GSW to the foot for decades, same as every developed nation.  (They learned the model from us.)

He's not fond of them.

Doug Casey: Debt, Doom, and Opportunity

http://howestreet.com/2011/09/doug-casey-debt-doom-opportunity/

"It’s like the perceived value of Bitcoins, as we discussed a few weeks ago; they are just as abstract and without intrinsic value as paper money, but they are not paper money and are supposed to be inflation proof. That was enough to get people to see value in them. They are, to reference the old joke, trading sardines, not eating sardines."

Sorry my Dutch Is not too good. But just to point out as others have, it's a currency, just like any other currency. You can buy illegal things with euros just as well as you can with any other currency and bitcoins.

The big difference with bitcoins and old fashioned currencies is thats it's not printed by any government and any noticeable It does not take fees and Such (like eg with credit cards) to use it digitally. It does not make it any more or less overused for Illegal Purposes. That argument is Comparable to ban cars or saying We Should kitchen knives Because people get killed by em.

Obviously not enough research done.

Bitcoin is not 'specially designed for illegal transactions. If your reasoning goes that way, then the dollar also developed for selling cocaine.

@ Everyone who has just seen this episode, take a look at http://www.bitcoin.org/ (the site of Bitcoin) and especially http://www.usecoins.com/ to understand what is Bitcoin DO (a decentralized currency).

Dear Editor, I can not imagine that you read but little chance I would take a minute.

Your research on this topic is not really thoroughly as there are some pretty important facts that you have completely left out of the broadcast. I found this myself because within 10 minutes (it was not that hard). So the situation you have outlined that drugs purchased from this website is completely anonymous. The website itself is also completely untraceable because they ensured by using Tor. Unfortunately, the payment Bitcoin actually traceable and it even makes it very easy for someone to find information. The IP address of all the two parties is in fact open to all. This IP address is traceable back to eg your home address and telephone number. Which is not only useful for the police but also fun for people who sometimes commit a overvalletje here and there. Well of course you can be sure that you have an anonymous IP address, but there are also ways to circumvent them if you really want to find.

What I'm saying is that you take a dumb idea in people's head placed a false sense of anonymity. There are people who do not take the necessary precautions and yet with this site to work. These people may result in trouble and you are the cause. Sure I know that you are not really the cause because everyone is responsible for his or her own actions. But just as an educational program, it is your responsibility to correct information in order to protect these people. There are extremely many stupid people in this world.

To force to stand here a YouTube video that explains everything as spotless.

« Dutch TV has done a nice objective segment on the Silk Road and bitcoin. They point out (correctly) that bitcoin was specifically developed for illegal transactions while revealing the horrors of drugs to us. Lots of interviews from anti-bitcoin people. A+, would recommend as an educational piece. »

I'm not sure I understand what this means exactly.  Anyway a video link, if it exists, would be nice.

The writer is being sarcastic.
The link is 'Enjoy Cheesy' in the post:

EDIT: Only in Holland would they actually buy some drugs on TV on  Silk Road and then sniff it to check if it actually is real.

say what you will about Bruce, he doesn't talk much.  Great discussion of legal issues affecting bitcoin by a professorial lawyer.
I watched the first 20 minutes and didn't see anything interesting.  Can you list some of the highlights you saw, and preferably say where they are in the (one-hour long) video?
