Actually NO. No cryptocurrency token can competate with bitcoin. BITCOIN being the pioneer cryptocurrency in general will always carry the the lead in terms of market price and in terms of volatility. Beside, all altcoins price depends on bitcoin price, so there is any way at any point other altcoins will overtake bitcoin in cryptocurrency market.

Not in my knowledge but I believe in possibilities. It can happen but we don't know when.
A new genius could be born somewhere and is just waiting for his/her mind to mature and bring out the new technology that would topple anything even Bitcoin.
There are actually good ones in the cryptocurrency market but due to what Bitcoin already planted which is trust, it's not easy to take over it.
When security is being discussed Bitcoin is also on the top, when people are starting to have knowledge about cryptocurrencies they mostly start in Bitcoin.
It's like the initiation of knowledge before they go through investing in altcoins.

Today I took my time to go round the market, there are more than 9000 cryptos in the market, but bitcoin is still the king. Now that many other cryptocurrencies are seriously pumping can they take over from bitcoin? If they take over from bitcoin can they last in that position like bitcoin?
What is your opinion.

Asked too many times but the answer still remains.
Even with ETH's innovations and a lot of altcoins in the market has been constantly improving their scalability. Smaller transaction fees and faster transactions, but still people trusts and use Bitcoin.

Still, it's far from happening that some altcoin will take Bitcoin's place. The only closest alt  to Bitcoin is ETH.
right, the only closest altcoin is eth. and eth itself can't seem to match the trust of bitcoin, this is not because of the product or technology, but a belief that makes bitcoin the king of cryptocurrencies, so no one altcoin can replace it, especially for new project altcoins

Bitcoin has come to stay, and nothing anybody can do to stop it growth
When a government of a particular country tries to stop it,it becomes even more popular in that country.
It has really helped many people and that's why we cannot stop to invest or trade in Bitcoin.
Bitcoin is a life changer, the moment you turn your attentions to Bitcoin, you life is liable to change positively.
If Bitcoin has been able to survive till now when other coins have crashed, then it is very obvious BTC has come to stay.
Totally agree, there is nothing that anyone, both individuals and institutions, can do that wants to stop the movement of bitcoin if it is moving to increase.
bad news that often comes to bitcoin will only be able to do it for a moment and bitcoin will remain and be able to bounce back.

it must be admitted and indeed it is proof that the great benefits of bitcoin have made many changes that occur for those who do work with bitcoin.
bitcoin has made many changes that can make many people helped by investing or trading in bitcoin.

it's only natural that bitcoin has become a legend and is the king of crypto, because now more people are familiar with crypto because of the existence of bitcoin itself. so it's no wonder that when talking about crypto it can be confirmed that it is bitcoin, even though there are other coins.

still no one can take over the position of bitcoin. All altcoins still depend on bitcoin. Bitcoin is still king. Just watch when the price of bitcoin is unstable, altcoins start crashing.
of the 9000 Altcoins you mentioned, only a few have survived and been able to compete with bitcoin, especially Ethereum, which followed in the footsteps of bitcoin. The rest are just a few shitcoins left.
Bitcoin continues to grow, bitcoin has many communities. Everything is centered on bitcoin so still no one has been able to overtake bitcoin.

Bitcoin have had gone through many test of time but this token remain alive and keep doing great till now, it's impressive to look the market grows even there's a threat like banned and fud and through this test of time every one could say that bitcoin will remain the king of cryptocurrency. For the question if there's an altcoin that could possibly take over the position of bitcoin the answer is no, so far there's no token that have a great performance like bitcoin, in a 9000 altcoins Ethereum followed bitcoin in hierarchy but can't take over the dominance of bitcoin.

Apart from knowing the fact bitcoin is the number one cryptocurrency in the market, have you checked to know the level of dominance it has over the market? The dominance of Bitcoin is around 43%, which means it is covering almost half of the market.

There has been times when it has even crossed more than fifty percent market dominance. Then if you’re to comparer that difference to Ethereum which is the only altcoin that comes close to Bitcoin, you will see that there is a huge difference; ETH holds a dominance of 19%. So, you can see that there is a huge difference between the two, not to talk of other cryptocurrencies that are way too low to be compared with bitcoin. So, none of them stands a chance of beating bitcoin.

It depends on how you define "overtake bitcoin"!

In terms of a nonsense factor such as market capitalization, it is trivial to go above bitcoin's since it is easy and doesn't cost anything for shitcoins to produce "supply". See the biggest shitcoin of all time called ethereum, it has 72 million ETH premined and it has contributed to its bloated and fake market cap helping it reach rank #2.
In terms of price it also is trivial to go above bitcoin. There currently are a couple of shitcoins that have small supplies (like a dozen coins) and have a price that is thousands of time bigger than bitcoin. Nobody buys these shitcoins though!

However in terms of utility and adoption not a single altcoin had been capable of getting even close to bitcoin simply because the altcoins we have seen so far are all useless.

There actually was a time a few years ago when ETH almost reached bitcoins market cap, came very close. It was mostly due to there being a disagreement with Segwit where some pool didn’t want to signal for segwit and it’s future looked bad. And Ethereum at the time was getting traction.

And it inches closer and closer however it never actually exceeded its market cap but came close by a few %s. So it’s possible that ETH or some other alt coin can have a higher market cap however not anytime soon.

BTC is still the most reliable and safest way to send money around.

Of course not, although there are so many new coins that are popping up but none can match bitcoin. bitcoin remains the coin of choice and will not be replaced. although many new coins have sprung up but there are also many shitcoins in it. bitcoin came as the first crypto and became the guideline for other altcoins and we know that the former is not easy to replace. so I think it's better not to argue anymore about it anymore because we already know what the answer is.

Repetitive question about bitcoin being taken over. Let's all just have it on our minds that bitcoin is there to stay and cannot be overtaken by any altcoin.
That's the reality that we should extract and accept because it will never happen to say at least. That's why don't be an overthinker about this because we already knew the answer.

how many times have we read a project trying to surpass btc or posting comparison tables about their edge over btc, and yet, where are they now? btc still remains the top currency. they may create a technology much much better than btc but they can't surpass the popularity and scope btc has already established.
as of right now, i dont see any project, even if it has high potential that will overpower btc's dominance. so don't know what kind of discussion are we going to see here...
Many times we did and never any of them have surpassed bitcoin. Too many that kept saying that there will be the time that bitcoin is no longer needed and has to be replaced by a newer one.
Those projects that have been telling that they're the one that shall make bitcoin remove from its throne are the ones being thrown naturally by its own market and economy.

Most of newbies learn about bitcoin first before they know about other altcoins that's why its not surprising to see that bitcoin still at the top and many other alts will struggle to surpass this since in the first place this was the first option to hold by institutions and other huge whales on crypto space. It will just a crazy claim for other new project telling that they will replace bitcoin since they need huge market capitalization first before this to happen.

if you're talking about the rank in the market , well in my personal opinion, obviously it's impossible because bitcoin level nowadays is too far away from the alts whereas even those top cryptos still unpredictable if they can take over bitcoin. So we cannot say that even you see some coins that making hype and always give a good return afterwards still not a sign that they will gonna skyrocketed and surpass bitcoin since most events in the space are just temporary and didn't last especially when it comes altcoins. So its too hard to tell if some of them has a potential to take the bitcoin place.
I wouldn't say it is "impossible" but it definitely doesn't look easy neither. I would say it is "improbable", that is more like it. It is obvious that people could make a big loss in crypto if they keep believing everything will go up at all times, but bitcoin is a rare one that drops less than others. At the high point, the difference between ETH and BTC became as low as 2x, which is still a lot I know but it was as close as it ever got. With a little bit of drop on bitcoin because of something and a little bit of increase on ETH for some hyped thing and we may have seen something very close.

I do believe that it will probably not happen, but I also believe that it is not impossible neither. Let's wait and see what happens in the future, btc will stay at the top most likely but I hope that one day something at least challenges, maybe take over for a short while and go down, make it look like it could be done.

@OP, Do you know why Bitcoin had been holding the number one position since more than a decade?

Due to:
- The total number of miners mining it, the AAA+ class security that Bitcoin provides in its transactions is provided in no other coin.
- The amount of total mining equipment being used worldwide to mine it.
- The difficulty it holds to be produced.
- Early investors who never sold their BTC no matter whatever prices they see on the charts, real hodlers.
- The electricity that's being used behind mining BTC.
- The validations BTC gets which are belonged to each and every PC that downloads full Blockchain.

And about taking over BTC?
LMAO, do you think it's that easy for any "street" coins or even major coins to get over it? If that was possible, BTC might had been already taken over, but just see this giant's marketcap. Now see ETH, do you see the difference? Even for a coin like ETH to get over BTC in ranks, it needs to gain at least 2.5-3x price so to gain that much marketcap. Is it possible? I think not.

Even in the next 100 years, no altcoin I repeat no altcoin can take over from Bitcoin. Remember that Bitcoin is the foundation of everything in the cryptocurrency market. How do you think a toddler can takeover from he's grand father. Impossible.
Bitcoin will continue ruling and every other coins that thinks they can do it on there own should continue flying. A little stone is what will bring then to fall to the sound of Bitcoin. Bitcoin is king.

As the first ever cryptocurrency, Bitcoin has already demonstrated its quality as the number one coin in the world. But as cryptocurrency technology develops, there is potential for Altcoin to take over the role of Bitcoin in terms of:

 ● FUNCTIONALITY.
 ● CONTINUITY.
 ● SPEED.
 ● VOLATILITY.

The altcoin that has the potential to replace Bitcoin in terms of FUNCTIONALITY is ETHEREUM.
Ethereum is the second largest cryptocurrency by market cap, and one of the coin that has a bright future after Bitcoin. Ethereum was the first cryptocurrency to introduce smart contracts (a blockchain-based platform for developing decentralized applications).

CARDONA is Altcoin that having the potential to take over Bitcoin in terms of CONTINUITY.
Cardano was born in the 3rd generation with the aim of fixing some of the problems faced Ethereum and Bitcoin. Today Cardona is growing in popularity and already has offices in 15 countries and 4 continents, and what sets Cardano apart from other blockchain is its work in Africa. Cardano has partnered with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education to store the academic records of 5 million students on its blockchain.

SOLANA is in the best position to take over in terms of SPEED.
In terms of speed, Bitcoin can process about 7 transactions every second (TPS), while Solana was much faster. Solana can process more than 50,000 transactions, thus making it much more scalable than Bitcoin.

CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currencies) can take over the role of bitcoin in terms of VOLATILITY.
One big obstacle to mainstream Bitcoin adoption is its volatility, and CBDC can definitely work it out. CBDC can pose a serious threat to Bitcoin as a form of digital payment. CBDC is supported by certain governments, the advantage of CBDC is that there is no price fluctuation, so it can take over the role of Bitcoin.

But until now no Altcoin has been able to touch Bitcoin in terms of price or market capitalization, especially to replace Bitcoin as the KING of cryptocurrency.

Bitcoin has come a long way in terms of value and popularity despite all the negative news, scam accusations of anti bitcoiners. I don't think that there is an altcoin that can stand like bitcoin. Also, so far no other altcoin is comparable and can replace bitcoin, not even Ethereum. Only bitcoin win the trust of the people because most of the altcoins are just hypecoin and no real use case and can't stay in crypto market for so long.
