positives:
if it wasnt for altcoins, then mining pool owners wouldnt be making as much profit from the merge mining that happens. thus they would attempt to milk the miners more, which would increase the tx fee war, where miner are trying to get more reward.

if it wasnt for altcoins, then some of the exchanges wouldnt have a business. seeing as some of them do not want to handle fiat due to the fiat regulations, they would be nothing to value bitcoin against without altcoin.

if it wasnt for altcoins, then people would not have as much freedom to play around making their own code, and be more forced into the bitcoin consensus of the github, where change takes forever and freedoms of creativity are limited to the security of bitcoin.

negatives
if it wasnt for altcoins, some premined scam coins would not exist, stealing real bitcoin value and leaving users holding a bag of s**t coins

there will always be people who just think that bitcoin isnt here without the altcoin but it are both different coins and they dont need to be spent the same time.

I see a lot of answers bitcoin can live with itself.

I dont really know much about that because I am still not knowledgeable regarding altcoins. But I know that it all started with bitcoin.
of course all Startlingly on bitcoin. bitcoin is the originator or cryptocurrency first created and with bitcoin phenomenon that began to be popular then lots of smart people who wants to follow bitcoin and create a new cryptocurrency. but bitcoin first born and famous. bitcoin will survive even stand alone as when you first start

That is what I think also. It can stand alone. Unlike altcoin where they need bitcoin as a standard currency which is know. I think the true question is will altcoins live without bitcoin.

none of the altcoins is known outside of the community and you can not find even one single person who knows about an altcoin and doesn't know about bitcoin first. besides all these altcoins are dying one way or another without any actual usage.

Unfortunately, you're right.
However, altcoinsare an important part of the  cryptocurrency market. Decentralization is one of the most important goals of Bitcoin, but altcoins improve further the process of decentralization cryptocurrency community. In addition altcoins help developers to experiment with unique characteristics.
Altcoins offer a healthy competition in the market cryptocurrency and thereby provoke Bitcoin developers remain active and continue to develop innovations. If part of the crypto community considers that the Bitcoin is outdated and no longer meets their needs, they can take altcoins.

Agree. New technologies might provide innovation, but it took a while for the trust in btc as an actual currency to build. It was hard fought actually, and outside of this community, I see no widespread adoption of any of the alts. That will change, but in time.

Bitcoin without altcoin can be seen during 2009-2011. No altcoins very few transaction, Litecoin came tx started to pile up. Now tx are in huge no(sometimes we have to wait for few blocks after paying right fee). Altcoins have made the Bitcoin more liquid.
so do you think that bitcoin will be great when altcoin comes ? I think it's just coincidence when altcoin come and bitcoin prices soared after the year 2011? rather halving over effect in 2012. not altcoin makes bitcoin prices high

I just wanted to get your opinions on this one , what do you think Bitcoin would be if there was no Alternative coins such Litecoin & Dogecoin and the others ...
I mean it would be better with or without them Bitcoin would have no value at all ?

I think bitcoin without altcoin can continue to operate, cause altcoin there because bitcoin. But otherwise, if bitcoin disappears then altcoin also will disappear too. thank you, just crossed in my mind.
Quick question, what was the 'thank you' about? I'm mildly confused.
Anyhoo, I kind of disagree that alts will disappear if bitcoin disappear. Most will disappear but some alts like doge, lite, eth, they won't disappear because they're pretty stable and they can stand on their own.

They have their own value as of now so they probably will not be degraded, rather their value will go up because bitcoin users will switch to them.

I think bitcoin can't live without altcoin cause mining bitcoins is not proftiable right now, much better to mine altcoins and trading it into bitcoins. Many people working this way, i think it's right.

Altcoins somehow give a positive effect to bitcoin. It is hard for them to achieve what bitcoin has because bitcoin is already an established crypto before them. They are just wishing right now for bitcoin to fall and rise up to take the place. Smiley

Altcoins do not help bitcoins in any way.Actually it is the other way around.Without bitcoin, altcoins can not exist.Bitcoin can do without them

I think altcoins also help bitcoins. I mean, altcoins also affect the price of bitcoin and every altcoin price always compared by bitcoin price.

I agree that altcoins help bitcoins to grow and become more popular. But altcoins do NOT affect the price of bitcoin, the bitcoin affects the price of altcoins. The center of all altcoins is bitcoin, they have no control in the price of bitcoin. If the exchange of bitcoin to USD moves a lot, then alt coins will move as well.

bitcoin was created first and before any of the altcoins that we know to date. So it means the existence of bitcoins is more important and all the alt coins depends on the progress of bitcoins alone. Smiley

Yes i agree with that bitcoin is the first coin created and thats why it is very trend and famous among other alt coin but really altCoin for today is very important to traders because they making money with it trading alt coins like forex is profitable and there are some coin like eth competing because the value is rising to. Its very good for bitcoin to have healthy competation by that it can add color to bitcoins and can add uniqueness.

its price has nothing to do with other alts according to my point of view. its price depend upon number of users how they use btc.

Yes, i also thing that bitcoin has more significant value. Maybe i might be thinking wrong about altcoins but i really have no interested in them. I have never ever made a transaction with any of the altcoins. Ive only focused on bitcoin cause i like it the way it is already.

i think the two different options bitcoin and altcoin, if there is no alt coin then there will be so many other trasection option. but we cannot say that bitcoin is impossible with out altcoin.

For the time being, the most usage of the bitcoin is for it to be used in altcoin trading. its actual use is still small.
Yes, in my opinion also there will not be any specific usage of most of the altcoins.
Dash claims they are anonymous. But with the bitcoin mixer I can make my transactions more anonymous and non-traceable. So there will not be any significant use from most of the alt coins.
