Someone please explain to me how and what it means for a block to get orphaned.

Thanks,

Tom

An oprhaned block is a block that wasn't actually accepted into the blockchain.
True.
It usually is caused by the longer chain accepting the block because more work and effort was put forth compared to your block.
Not true.  There wasn't more work and effort put into the solution of that other block.  It's a majority consensus.  You and I both solve block number 12345.  I submit my block to the network.  You also submit yours.  If more nodes accept your version of the chain, then my block becomes orphaned.  I say to a node, "Hi, here's block 12345".  That node says, "I've already got 12345, you need to update yourself with my copy."  Eventually every node has your copy of the chain and my poor block 12345 no longer has a parent on the chain (the block it claimed as its parent has already been linked to your block) and is orphaned.

It usually is caused by the longer chain accepting the block because more work and effort was put forth compared to your block.

Quote from: en.bitcoin.it
An orphan block is a block that doesn't have a known parent in the longest chain.

Not to be confused with a stale block, which is a well-formed block which is no longer part of the difficultywise-longest well-formed blockchain.

The block reward in a staled block is no longer spendable on the difficultywise-longest well-formed blockchain; therefore whoever mined that block does not actually get the reward (or the transaction fees). This phenomenon must be taken into account by mining pools that use any payout strategy other than "proportional".

The sudden down and steady drop looks worse than the DDoS attack.
could be a major power outage too

Pool lost about half the speed?

20-30 PH went away.  I bet someone notices!

The payouts are less frequent, but more value so I guess that is a wash.

I wonder if there is a party somewhere and us newbies did not get invited  Embarrassed

The town where their biggest private mining farm is located in Sichuan province caught a fire this afternoon, all communications, include Internet and telephone have interrupted over there.
Source?

I to would appreciate source to.  I would like to see if there is a reason such as this or what happened.  It definitely dropped the hash a lot.

I'm still there, but it looks like I kicked over to the backup (the solo pool) for a bit.

Still can't log in.  I thought it was going to work once, but it got so far and just hung.

I tried 2 different internet connections with 4 different computers.

Going to take a break for a while and come back.
I had to use my tab key to get to the login button, something in the CSS was in front of the button making it difficult/impossible to submit.  I was using Chrome on OS X.  Try tabbing if you are still having problems.

Yes, that worked.  I am using FireFox.  Thanks for your reply.  I was starting to think I was nuts!

The login problems happened right when I was going to show off my bitmining so someone.  It was embarassing.
That's always how it works out, it seems!  Wink

@BitmainWarranty - I'm glad to see you relatively active in the forums providing info to your pool miners.  I'd ask that either you, or the owner of the BITMAIN account would please edit the original post to remove your references to p2pool.  You don't support it.  Your code implementation on github hasn't been touched since November of last year.

Thanks.
