With a community-driven review system and a “smart contract”-managed ad platform, CyberMiles seeks to be the Ethereum of e-commerce

In the world of blockchain, e-commerce is where a growing number of entrepreneurs are choosing to leverage the technology. Reports from 36kr, a TechCrunch-like media outlet in China, point to the rise of decentralized distribution applications like Ecom Chain, as well as emerging social e-commerce credit systems. On the forefront of this global trend, CyberMiles, an in-development blockchain protocol designed and optimized for online marketplaces (such as 5miles), has announced its intention to build a fully-decentralized e-commerce ecosystem.

The mission of CyberMiles is to disrupt and improve the e-commerce infrastructure chain and its components with what CyberMiles refers to as “smart business contracts.”

This initiative was launched by 5miles’ 5xlab, a blockchain technology incubator from the research and development team behind the popular second-hand goods trading platform. Since launching in 2015, the 5miles marketplace has expanded to a dozen categories and more than 350 subcategories, integrating customized commercial contracts.

According to Dr. Lucas Lu, C.E.O. of 5miles and a founding member of CyberMiles, the purpose of CyberMiles is to be an e-commerce version of the Ethereum blockchain. Why is blockchain technology needed in the e-commerce industry? Dr. Lu believes that CyberMiles can solve three significant barriers facing e-commerce.

Twenty years ago, the Open Source community was at a crossroad. The method of decentralized software production (aka Open Source collaboration), championed by a small number of ideology-driven developers, had produced very impressive results such as the Linux operating system, the Apache web server, the GCC compilers, and much more. Yet, the mainstream software powerhouses were still skeptical and even hostile to software decentralization (Microsoft called it a “cancer”, worse than scam). It was unclear how Open Source and decentralized software production can generate “real profits”. It had no “real business model” after all. It was very much like blockchain and cryptocurrency today.

At the time, Marc Fleury was a fresh physics PhD from École Polytechnique, having spent a few years doing quantum research at MIT. He aimed at one of the most profitable software sector at the time, enterprise application servers, and started a new Open Source project called JBoss to disrupt the incumbent players.
