Thanks for the update @LTU_btc.

And with that, I will have to lock this thread for good. Regardless if this is weight issue or Ortiz Jr really suffering from a rare condition that he has Covid-19 in his system and can't get rid of it because his immune body can't fight it, then I guess Dela Hoya made the right decision to cancel the fight again. Most likely this will be a career ending case for Vergil. He might come back after a few more months or years, but no assurance that he could be the same fighter as he has to fight his conditions not just physically but mentally as well. We can only hope that he can overcome all of this. Thanks to those who waited for this fight and comments on this thread. For sure majority here as disappointment just like me because this is going to be a great and exciting fight, but it is what it is.

In any case though, I think that Ortiz might be done, I mean he has rhabdomyolysis and now diagnosed with long COVID? very hard to recover if your body is not cooperating.

Yes, Ortiz's career is over as one of the very few boxers who have a perfect knockout record and is undefeated too, his career is gone too soon if ever he is cured he may not be the same Ortiz again, he has a good shot in the welterweight division as the present champions are getting older or moving up in a higher weight level, we all thought he is already cleared by his doctor, but I guess he needs a long treatment for whatever afflicting him, maybe after a year we'll hear from him he is too young to retire but he needs to recuperate and heal and it will take time.

For these who were waiting for this fight - bad news, it got cancelled again as Ortiz withdraws from fight just few day before it:
https://www.espn.com/boxing/story/_/id/37970020/vergil-ortiz-jr-withdraws-bout-vs-eimantas-stanionis
It's getting ridicuous as fight got cancelled for 3rd time. I hope that Stanionis won't agree to fight with Ortiz again and these circumstances keeps him already 15 months without a fight.
Too bad, fans have been waiting for this fight, although Ortiz is the favorite hands down. We don't know though who to believed too, because the articles says that he can't make weight, that's why the postponement.

So GBP is now headlining Floyd Schofield Jr vs Haskell Lydell Rhodes.

Yes, I've read about this as well. It's an unfortunate news for the Ortiz camp because their boxer might not participate in any fights anymore in the upcoming future because his disease is so rare that it's not given any priorities by the scientists to develop and find a cure for the disease so that any bearer in the future will carry less risks. I've read that almost all people who have undergone the treatment are experiencing some abnormalities in their kidneys which leaves them no options but to resort into dialysis.

Thanks for the information, so it's really complicated health problems for Ortiz now, I agree with what Oscar said, the health of their boxers is their priority right now. And maybe this disease is really targeting his immune system (I'm no doctor), so it's not a simple taking of drugs and Ortiz will be cured.

Lots of promises for this young boxer, we've even mentioned his name against a potential showdown with either Crawford and Thurman in the future. But with was has happening to him, we might not see this Ortiz fight anymore.

I'm not so familiar with these boxers, but looking at their records, I'm impressed with Vergil Ortiz Jr because he is undefeated and all of his wins have been via knockout. Are there any betting odds available for this particular fight yet? I checked one of the sportsbooks I use, but I couldn't find the betting odds for the fight. It's possible that, like other less popular fights, the odds for this one may not be readily available.

Yes, Vergil Ortiz has one of the best records in this division, and he is touted to be the next guy, the one that either Crawford and Spence going to pass the torch as the new face of the 147 lbs.

And then we have Eimantas Stanionis as the regular champion of the WBA although doesn't have the knockout percentage, but he can get the job done with his hard and grind kind of fight. He loves to break down his opponent and then just scoring as much as he can until they are broken down and ripe to get a knock out or win on the cards of the judges.

And with the fight already set between Spence and Crawford, hopefully we can see the winner of this fight fighting the winner of the Spence vs Crawford. Stanionis vs Ortiz is for the regular WBA belt, so it make sense that the WBA should only have one champion in their division because it really doesn't make sense to have to champions, Spence and then Eimantas.

But let's see, so far no hype in this fight as obviously we are looking at Spence and Crawford. But I think this one should also be in our calendar as this is just less than a month from now. Everyone is impressed on Ortiz Jr that this should be a must see fight for us.

So the bets are going on Ortiz Jr with a knockout.

@OP Also better if you will update the date on the thread as well since we have a new scheduled date. As far as the winner here, yeah, the governing body should be allowed to fight Spence since his fight with Thurman is in limbo or at least there is no fight in the horizon for Spence this year. There's too much controversy around this 147 lbs, no superfight and then mandatory fights are not exercised by Errol Spence Jr and Terrence Crawford but they continue to hold the belt.

We have waited for this fight to happen, and yes, finally we will have a new date for this one.

It's true, the name of this two boxers are right now behind Spence and Crawford. But they should have been given the chance to fight those boxers, specially Spence who seems to be docking the champion in his own division,  Eimantas Stanionis, don't ask me why they have two champions in WBA, that's how boxing politics is. If Spence can't defend it against his mandatory then he should be strip of the belt, simply as that. But that's not what this organizations are doing, because of corrupt practices. Anyhow, the underdog is still the favorite here, so again, this is a great fight for the 147 lbs. And either of them could be a good test for Crawford and Spence if they want to.

There is a new date for this fight, July 8 at AT&T Center.

Quote
A new date has been set for the highly anticipated clash between undefeated knockout sensation Vergil Ortiz, Jr. (19-0, 19 KOs) of Grand Prairie, Texas and World Champion Eimantas Stanionis (14-0, 9 KOs) of Kaunas, Lithuania for Stanionis’ WBA "regular" welterweight title.

https://www.boxingscene.com/eimantas-stanionis-vs-vergil-ortiz-on-july-8-t-center-san-antonio--174615

So at least we will finally see this one, barring no postponement due to injuries to either parties. This should be one of the most anticipated fight as they will be fighting for the WBA belt.

And hopefully the winner will have a crack as Spence as both Stanionis and Errol is holding a current WBA welterweight belt.

looking at the date range:

March 2022: He had to postpone fight because of health problems caused by rhabdomyolysis

March 2023: He had to postpone the fight due to health problems caused by the appendectomy

April 29: He had to postpone the fight due to health problems caused by the rhabdomyolysis

looking at the date ranges, it doesn't seem to me that he continues fighting is a good idea, I'm not a doctor, but this date range is due to the illness he's having, maybe it was a case of him retiring from fights, the doctor and who can say what he should or shouldn't do, but in those types of situations where the disease has appeared in a short period of time and knowing that it is a disease that may be related to the type of activity he does, then the doctor will be in front of of a big dilemma

I'm not a doctor also but illnesses like these will take a toll on one's body the operations and the medicines will have an impact on the body I remember one of my cousins who do not want to have an operation and just
want to take medicines to cure his illness because the operation will make his body weaker and not the same anymore, he should take a long rest to heal his body from too much tension and training and he should get a nutritionist and conditioning coach to manage his training that is if his doctors will still allow him to box again.

It's very hard to say what will be the cause of this medical condition, I'm no expert, but it could be inherited or yeah he might be overtraining and pushing his body to the limits and then its not responding to that kind of stress so his body deteriorate.

Hopefully, as he is still very young, he could recover back and so we will still see this fight in the future. He is a good prospect and his name has been popping around as the next champion in this division. And it's going to be a huge set back for him if he can't or become permanent disable because of this injuries. Hoping for the best for Ortiz.

Does Vergil has a conditioning coach he should have one and if he has one he should change his conditioning coach the conditioning coach is the one to oversee your body to absorb strain, Vergil wants to prove something that he deserves to be a great fighter that he overtrains himself, this is the second time he suffers from this condition its time if he recovers he should change the way he trains.
The body has limitations on what it can do and Vergil is too young to stop boxing he should learn to control his training we hope to see him fight again, he has huge potential to be a great boxer.

So not sure if we are going to see this great fight though. We don't know what this undisclosed illness is, but prior to that Ortiz was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis. It's a form or medical condition wherein the dead muscles are releasing toxins to his liver and kidneys.

And there is rumor that this undisclosed illness could be related to Peds or the cycle or recycle of it, again it's just a rumor and no one can confirm it.

The first time I read about that kind of medical condition so I Google it and that illness is quite alarming

Quote
Rhabdomyolysis (often called rhabdo) is a serious medical condition that can be fatal or result in permanent disability. Rhabdo occurs when damaged muscle tissue releases its proteins and electrolytes into the blood. These substances can damage the heart and kidneys and cause permanent disability or even death. In the workplace, causes of rhabdo include heat exposure, physical exertion or overuse, and direct trauma (e.g., crush injury from a fall). Anyone can get rhabdo, but workers in many different occupations have a higher chance of developing rhabdo.

https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/rhabdo/default.html

Dos this means that Vergil overexertion in his training is the main cause of this, but the biggest question is can he still comeback from his good condition because Rhabdomyolysis can result in permanent disability we need more updates on this if they have detected it in an early stage he'll have a chance to comeback with zero negative effect, I hope that's the case.

according to the news I read, last year he had to postpone his fight against Michael McKinson due to his health condition:

The condition forced Ortiz to postpone a previous fight in March 2022 against Michael McKinson. Ortiz would go on to score a ninth-round TKO of McKinson in August.

fighters don't like to retire while they still see that their bodies have a lot of muscle, fighters' marketing agents only think about making money, they only see fighters as a source of money, just look at this:

"Vergil works tirelessly to prepare for his fights and this is of course a huge disappointment for Golden Boy, him and his family," said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya in a statement."

even in a situation like this, they only think about making money with the fighter, Is something regrettable.

Here is Vergil Ortiz highlights, knock out of all of his opponents,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwSzeQzgLfI

Obviously, you can see and even hear the power when it touches his opponents whether on face or in the body. The way he punch them though in the body is very different, it's like a straight right, not the one that we usually show like a left hook to the body. And I think the straight might be more devastating because his opponents will usually take a knee and can't get up in time.
That is why Ortiz Jr is considered to be a dangerous opponent and that is obviously seen from his performances inside the ring. Once he starts giving his powerful punch, he won’t stop punching his opponent until he knock him down. And that’s why Stanionis should learn how to defend himself more, otherwise his opponent will leave him losing his consciousness because of Ortiz Jr hard punch.
^It is possible but remember Stanionis' tough and rugged style closely resembles that of Kavaliauskas, it was clear that Ortiz's power punches proved to be too much for him to handle. It could Stanionis' best efforts to counter and fight back, Ortiz's relentless assault proved to be too overwhelming, causing him to seemingly quit the fight and prompting the referee to stop it. But I have doubt Stanionis hopes to have a chance against Ortiz in their future fight, he may need to adopt a strategy of hitting and then hugging Ortiz to disrupt his momentum and avoid taking too much damage.

The fight might pushed for another date as there was another setback, Ortiz is now injured,

Quote
BoxingScene.com has learned that the Eimantas Stanionis-Vergil Ortiz WBA ‘Regular’ welterweight title fight was postponed for the second time. Ortiz was forced to shut down training camp after suffering an undisclosed illness. The development forced the unbeaten contender to withdraw from a scheduled April 29 date with Stanionis at College Park Center at The University of Texas at Arlington campus.

I agree Ortiz is kind of scary in how he delivers his knockout punches I already posted Stanionis will be tested here because he has not faced someone like Ortiz, Stanionis can deliver an upset why not, but for him to get that upset he'll have to go through a lot of pain and take a lot of risks.
Vergil is the top guy to beat in the welterweight he should be in the spotlight because of his style and power, there are a lot of existing fights to consider in the welterweight division if only promoters will agree to let them fight the best in that division, hopefully, this year we'll see an Ennis - Ortiz- Crawford- Spence fights for the undisputed king of welterweight.

Stanionis style might closely resembles Kavaliauskas, tough rugged fighter from Lithunia, but obviously, Ortiz just smothered him with power punches that he has no answer and seems to quit the fight until referee Laurence Cole stopped the fight because Kava doesn't want to fight anymore because he has taste the power of Vergil already.

So might be the same strategy for Vergil, put up a show with his power and it's hard for Stanionis to counter. He should be like hit and then hug Vergil to not get him his momentum. But it's going to be a boring fight for us.
