as a native Chinese, i can say you are perfectly right. but not all the educated Chinese know these, most of us don't care about politics, because it's dangerous to do so in this country, and actually, most of us don't know how important Xinwen Lianbo is, especially Chinese from common families which don't have members as officers or big businessman

It could be difficult for Westeners to understand the uniqueness of Xinwen Lianbo. It looks like an "Evening News" on CNN or BBC, but actually there is no comparable programme in Western Countries. As wikipedia puts it:
