They both have value so I don't think it's right to compare them. We have been comparing gold and Bitcoin for a long time and I don't think telling Usd is better than bitcoin or vice versa would still be justifiable. Bitcoin is volatile and decentralized while Usd is the international currency and it never losses it's value.

These guys have some interesting stuff going on here https://cryptotradernews.com/cryptocurrency/bitcoin-vs-usd-for-storing-value-purposes/

Today, I would personally pick USD as it can be used world wide and for a variety of purposes. However, if BTC were to stop being JUST a speculative asset I would contemplate making the switch. I like being in control of my cash without having to depend on some greedy bank!

Thoughts?

In term of storing purpose, USD would be good since the value will relatively be stable. We can store our money in bitcoin too but I think when we do such thing, our main purpose isn't just for storing. It's more for investment purposes. Both USD and bitcoin have their own advantages and disadvantages. We may use both of them alternately depends on the needs.

At first I thought this question was a joke, but yes, currently the U.S. dollar has value as the global reserve currency. However, like all fiat currencies it has a tendency to lose value over time and can be printed infinitely. As an investment, BTC is right up there with gold, if not better, and soon has a chance to displace the dollar as a medium of exchange as its infrastructure is developed.

They are both unique and has their own characteristics. We can't deny the fact that without USD, we still couldn't use BTC to purchase goods with merchants and business who don't accept Btc. We couldn't purchase Btc without usd at some point. They both support each other and one couldn't work well without the other one.

I think bitcoin is better because it has limited supply, but we need both because fiat money will still be used even if some shops will accept bitcoin some governments will not use crypto.

Wow someone gave you 2 merits for that?? If this is how you feel then why are you here? Get out!! Now!!
Why you even here?

Also bitcoin can be used worldwide and is accepted in many places so who knows what you talking about. I can see you new. So be humble.
This morning while talking with my mom, an over 60 years old woman, about economy, government and things like that she turned to me and asked "how do I start to use Bitcoin?".. I was quite surprised because I never talked much about it with her as, in my mind, "she is old, she will not understand anyways" but I was wrong.. then I spent a time to explain how to get started, how to invest.. everything in an easy way to make her able to understand about all the risks yet see all the possibilities and, at the end, she surprised me even more when she said "from this next month on I want you to help me buying a few (satoshis) every month"
Then, I never had any doubt about BTC or USD but now I am more sure than ever, BTC all the way  Grin
The incident mentioned above by an user is a clear example to choose the right one. Bitcoin is truly the best to have as a store of value. With USD, the backing by the government makes it more of a trusted asset than bitcoin. To overcome this scenario we need to get the legal support from governments which we're lacking with bitcoin. When all levels of people come to know about bitcoin, surely we'll experience a big change in preference from the common people.

Lol dude wtf are you talking about?
Legal backing of the goverment?? Why would we need that?
Bitcoin doesn't need the goverment thats the whole point. OMG BRO!!!

To me bitcoin is far better than usd even as a speculative asset as many has see it! We still have time ahead of us and bitcoin can still become anything we want it to be in considering on how people refer to it today. I have started computing my assets especially financial one in terms of bitcoin and not in fiat since the beginning of this year and my budget for 2019 is written in bitcoin and not in usd. The world may under look bitcoin today but time is coming when it will be the most valuable assets on earth!!!

However, if BTC were to stop being JUST a speculative asset I would contemplate making the switch.

Then unfortunately for you, you're going to need to wait for a while. Yes, bitcoin is 10 years old, but it's still a very very very young asset. It's going to need a lot of liquidity for it to sort of find it's "stable price" to really be a good hedge against fiat and it's going to also need a lot of time for it to be adopted by people and merchants.

If you don't like speculating, then that's completely understandable.

I will choose bitcoin, all the way. Bitcoin is better as a mode of payment because it does not require a third party to confirm transactions. It is also way better as store of value because of its deflating property.

It's called the "All Mighty Dollar" for a reason...

Currently, you can't really pay bills (or atleast easily) with Bitcoin, and with the volatility associated with cryptos, it would drive you crazy from month to month trying to do so. You also won't find large firms willing to collateral bitcoin as an asset, so loans and large money transfers aren't available yet.

Basically, Bitcoin comes down to being a speculative investment that sometime in the near future, mass adoption will allow easy banking with crypto. So, if the question was phrased like an investment:

Would you rather Hold Cash or Hold Bitcoin?

I think the obvious answer from this forum would be:

Gimme the F*ckin' BTCBTCBTC

you are comparing apples and oranges and just like different fruits they both can exist side by side and each offer you different features that you can use and enjoy. fiat is the day to day money that we all use and since it has been around for as long as we were alive it will remain in our lives and won't go away that easily but bitcoin is offering something unique and that is the sovereignty that it offers you when you use it.

by the way bitcoin is not some "speculative asset" just because some people choose to treat it that way.

In my opinion, they are not really competitors and there is no better here. Both currencies have different use cases.

I believe bitcoin mainly use, for now, is to make the transactions that banks do not allow you to do, or that they charge very expensive fees. Those transactions ares remittances, currency conversions, payments in another currency, etc.

Another great use is as store of value, especially in time of crisis.

I hate Banks and I do hate those who control them. For me it is always Bitcoin as I know it is not controlled or Governed  by few billionaires. Few more reason are - The value of FIAT cannot be controlled by the general public, the value of Bitcoin depends on General public/investors. Ten years from now value of Fiat might not change or change but, Bitcoin value will rise and more people will be using it.
