In my opinion other coins can have huge price but the most expensive coin always will be bitcoin, because bitcoin is first and the most popular coin

Yeah it is possible. As we see last days, bitcoin cash flied multiplying its price. It was near to see bitcoin dying completely. I think now that it is possible but highly unlikely.

To be honest, if Litecoin was going to surpass Bitcoin or even Ethereum, it would have done so by now. It is an old altcoin, created 6 years ago. Some of the better privacy coins might stay in use for some while, but I think that the nature of Bitcoin will be that it might fork when benefits are clear and obvious. By the nature of blockchains, it doesn't really make too much sense for multiple of them to exist at the same time. Altcoins simply don't have the support to make too much hardforks probably, since people might just want to make a new one instead and profit more.
So in your opinion are there any new altcoins on the horizon which could challenge Bitcoin or Ethereum?

A coin can challenge and test the leadership of bitcoin. But it can't take the leadership. I'm sure there are tons of coins which has great speeds, maybe times greater than bitcoin. This is not enough to surpass bitcoin. It's all about the adoption by the society.

I can implement a coin faster and better than bitcoin, but nobody uses and adopts it.

I think this currency should:
a) have limited supply (unlike Ethereum)
b) have POS or some other energy efficient algo
c) have contracts. And by the way, a lot of people put a lot of efforts learning Solidity/Web3.js. Hope hwoever creates new currency will not force them to re-learn. Besides, it will make migration easier.
d) will have fork protection. Something like an immutable ownership contract that forbids "cash", "gold" and so on.

Hey everybody. I see that this forum has a lot of people talking about the strengths about bitcoin. For eg there are posts which say value of 1BTC to reach $500K or 1BTC = Lamborghini and even one which debated whether one can forego their jobs over Bitcoin.

It makes me wonder whether there are any cryptocurrencies which will overtake bitcoin in the near future. I mean BTC got to where it is because it was first in the market. But now with increasing awareness there's equal oppportunity for other such currencies to make it as big.

My question to you all which will later be converted into a poll:

Is there any cryptocurrency which can beat Bitcoin in sheer value (in $)?

I think there is. Bitcoin is not perfect,  there is always something that will take its place. Something that can match or even overpower it. There is no permanent in this world. Things happens unavoidable and unexpectedly. So it is possible in any circumstances that some sort of cryptocurrency might be taking its place any time

There will surely be but the question is what coin it is? Pretty thought to think since there so many coins has been and some of them are made for pure greed and the other is for business opening opportunity for the businessman who want to make their dream business to be implemented.

Presale is live!
I would be more than surprised to see an alt coin even catch bitcoin in value. I am pretty sure Bitcoin will always lead the cryptocurrencies. Of course some coins will gain value in time like ETH or Litecoin but as i belive they can never be match for Bitcoin.

What about Litecoin, Gbyte, Monero, QTUM, Ripple or others? Any of them have the staying power and more importantly can they pass Bitcoin or even Ethereum?

Well certainly this coins have the potential to make it to the top in coming time. Yes the first challenge for this altcoins will be to reach to the price of ETH and then move forward to reach somewhere near btc price. Its a long journey for this coins but not an impossible if people started using more of this coin as btc is way to expensive for many of them.

In my opinion, no. If that happens it will probably be a big collaborative effort from the start. I don't think that such a coin would start with a small group and low adoption at it's infancy, it would most likely be a big portion of people and developers from Bitcoin and other projects, they would join together to make a wallet that is as secure and reviewed as Bitcoin Core and a new protocol that is superior to it. However, this does seem like it would most likely just be a hard fork of Bitcoin, since people owning BTC would also back this up.

Big profits, like the ones that happened with Bitcoin are only there when something big happens. They don't happen if it is just some new altcoin, someone had a good idea and it blows up like that. The idea has to be amazing, revolutionary, bigger then anything else in that area before it, not just better, but more of a ground breaker. Cryptocurrency is an amazing tech, it is so much more complex then fiat, it is truly revolutionary and still it exist for over 8 years and all of them combined are having a hard time battling fiat. It grows, but it is nowhere near having even 1% of the market. It is really hard to take down an established system.
At the moment a few Alt coins are holding steady like BAT, ARK and TRST.

I don't know about Ethereum...
Pretty big blockchain, very hard to sync, I always got to a grinding halt when I tried it, more then 10 times. Bitcon always sync up, did it like 2 times, with a 100% success rate.
It is also too centralized and their developers like to make very big and controversial changes, that shouldn't work on Bitcoin. Segwit is such a obvious and small change and it is soft fork compared to a hard fork that Ethereum did only to rewrite the valid transactions in blockchain (the DAO fork). Also the PoS system they will implement is pretty untested compared to PoW Bitcoin has. Had more bugs in the clients as well (mostly syncing bugs), when I used it. Not so fluid for use like Bitcoin Core.
The adoption is pretty big on Bitcoin as well, that is hard to battle.
I think that they focused on features to much and not on security and stability. It is great for development, maybe, but currency is a lot better stable, certain and secure.
I mean good luck, but I wouldn't bet on it.
You make interesting observations. Which leads me to believe that it is doable. A better tech down the line might spring up 3-4 altcoins giving bitcoin a run for its money. Every Monopoly gets beaten someday.
I don't know how you got to that conclusion Cheesy I literally just bashed Ethereum on how it is inferior as a currency in every way. I hope you didn't confuse and thought I was talking other way around. I meant that Ethereum is too centralized, too big of a blockchain, too buggy and doing controversial changes like the DAO fork. But if you understood correctly and still reached the same conclusion, then good. As I said, good luck with that Smiley
Yes I understood you as you had pointed out its major flaws in a few short sentences. Which means there are areas of improvements. Just requires good execution to sort it out.

All cases are possible in the following years.
Everything will depend on how Bitcoin will scale in the future. I'm a bit scared for now because Bitcoin is clearly the worst crypto existing in the top 50.

Of course many of them would.
Because with time every technology advances.
Bitcoin sure would be obsolete one day being replaced by better blockchain technology.
