I think that if you have a condition, you can explain the current bitcoin. Because bitcoin is synonymous with encrypted money. In addition, it was the first coin to be encrypted! Even if the other coin technology is better, or there are other advantages, faster transfers and so on. But it can't replace bitcoin. Without bitcoin, there is no encrypted currency, so you can think of it!

In my opinion, bitcoin more popular than other coins is because bitcoin prices are very high right now and more people buy bitcoin than other coins, so bitcoin prices are becoming expensive and getting known by many people.

It is obvious that Bitcoin was the first crypto currency in the market and that is why it is getting most of the attention from the community.
Besides this, all the major pairs in the crypto currency market has the base pair as Bitcoin and this is why Bitcoin dominates the market.
All the crypto currencies are traded for Bitcoin which gives it an edge and more people buy BTC. It is sure that the coin will be worth millions in future since the supply is limited and the demand is more.

I think because it was the first coin and now many people use it because it was the first one only. Now it is a lot of money worth so now many people are joining every day.

This will make bitcoin worth a lot more and it is still going.

With over 1200 crypto currencies out there I don't understand why bitcoin still dominates. Surely there are technically far superior solutions out there. I know it was the first one but does this alone warrant it being the most popular?
90% or even 95% of those 1200 crypto currencies are just clone of existing alts or bitcoin.

Next thing, price of bitcoin is not only because it is technically superior, its because it is first of its kind and there are millions of people that trust bitcoin rather than other alts. Bitcoin community is way bigger than what other alts have which is enough to create very high demand for bitcoin which directly affects the price of bitcoin.

Bitcoin is more popular than any other cryptocurrency because there is no way a prince can be greater or more influential than a king.

I have only been into crypto currencies for a few weeks so forgive me if my question is daft...
If bitcoin is at such an early stage in terms of taking over even a small percentage of the world monetary system, and yet it is having to fork to resolve technical issues, is there not a more efficient crypto currency out there that wouldn't have these problems?
For example, if vertcoin had to handle the same volume of transactions would it perform better?

Because the consensus is that bitcoin is the standard. Also bitcoin has proven that it's not a scam. It has the history on its side. And the people that invested in bitcoin (miners for instance) refuse to sell low, so the price will be high.

Sure there are many coins out there with more potential, and better tech, but  we have to agree on a common backend, and that is bitcoin.

Well, you can understand that bitcoin is the first. The first globally recognized virtual cryptocurrency, the oldest, most tenacious virtual currency.Other virtual currencies are basically competitive products inspired by bitcoin's blockchain, but now the blockchain of bitcoin is still the most reliable.

Bitcoin had a hell of a head start as a pioneer, and it's solid across the board. Despite being dated, it's still able to cater to people's needs, so few feel the need to migrate. Perhaps the biggest factor, though, is its value and utility. It's so ridiculously valuable that people have overlooked its technical shortcomings altogether. Its biggest "pro" has been its overall value, which no other cyrptocurrency can even dream of touching at the moment.

That's also why it's unlikely to get obsolete anytime soon. You don't need all the bells and whistles that other newer cryptocurrencies provide for an investment or storage of value. Your primary concern will always be its ability to retain, and even increase its value.

It's like Colosseum, all fighters come from different regions, different lineages, but you bet, always the most people bet on the most powerful person. His bet was several times as many as the others. Grin

Forking is not really intended to solve bitcoin problem, I’m sure with that. But those developers just using those tag line “better bitcoin” as a marketing strategy for them to gain supporters. But why does it won’t work as they planned to be? Because the bitcoin community itself has more confidence that the original one will last a lifetime than those copycats. This is more than enough reason and those you’ve heard complaining about this problem, this and that are just making issue to have sympathy and in the end you will just been used to pump they’re coins.

these two have nothing to do with each other. every system needs an upgrade since we are not living in a perfect world and anything that humans build will have issues that will need fixing down the line or need upgrades to match the needs of the future.
as for altcoins, there are coins that claim to be better and more efficient but in reality when you check them out you can see they also have issues. and most of the times these issues are serious ones which is why none of them have grown to be anything significant.

forks are made to be create a new coins that related in bitcoin and has more improvement and dont have any technical issue, meaning system much better than bitcoin, but those new coins is not a bitcoin to replace the original bitcoin. bitcoin is the one of the powerful coins already exist after those new coins, people are already done some activity with bitcoin so its not easy to replace bitcoin or it would never be happen to replace it. so even they created a hundreds of fork or hundreds of coins which is better than bitcoin, they cant totally replace or to be near in our bitcoin even they have a more advance and most upgraded system.

Bitcoin is the original, all the other currencies are clones.

Take any original product and compare it with the clones, what is the best one?
Bitcoin built its reputation as main Crypto-Currency and I don't think it will change so fast, maybe in a distant future where a really superior currency can appear.
I agree with this answer but I would like to explain a little more.
Bitcoin dominates the "crypto economy" also due to increasing user growth, even now exceeding the amount of bitcoin. Although a lot of people use bitcoin because of the increasing price and they don't know the real concept of bitcoin, but that's why bitcoin is superior to altcoin.

Honestly, yes it does. BTC ha sits flaws as you stated, and the miner community have different opinions causing to the forks, but the important fact is that BTC is popular as BTC. Sometimes when people are talking about crypto they don't say Cryptocurrency in general but refer it to as Bitcoin. Bitcoin essentially defines Cryptocurrency. The technical superiority of other coins don't matter if they aren't as popular as bitcoin, which they probably won't become as its very hard to overthrow an brand which has become the definition of its field.

It isn't forks themselves that are the problems as much as some group of people try to take advantage of them. Think of a fork as a software patch, which essentially it it. Every time Microsoft release a patch or update for Windows it is essentially a fork. Some people may choose to stay on the original code for technical or other reasons, so there ends up being multiple forks out there of the OS. While it can be a nightmare for Microsoft to make sure new patches work with all previous iterations (thus why they now aggressively promote patching to the latest code) they still need to maintain backward compatibility as part of their support.

The only difference between bitcoin and Microsoft then is no one gets up in arms over a new Windows patch, nor do they attempt to hijack it and make a new OS of their own out of it. Of course this is a hypothetical example as Windows is proprietary and MS would sue you if you tried anything like this, but conceptually it is the same principle.

i think, because bitcoin is the mother of coin, it mean another cryptocoin is the child of from bitcoin itself thats why bitcoin still dominates. But not just for that the reason is,
and for the fork is just to make the system better than before, there many other coin do the fork to not just bitcoin. For example is Ethereum,
