hcp that makes sense.  i did not think about that.  Okay so just to make sure.  This is what im planning to do.

1.  Create a bitcoin cash wallet and click SPLIT.  Now i have BCH address in my nano ledger s.

2.  Im going to use a separate windows machine.  But i also will have to download electrum on it first right since i would input the 12 word electrum seed to restore my electrum on the separate machine?

3.  Then i install electron cash on the separate windows machine.

4.  Then i would import the private keys from electrum to electroncash correct?  And to do this, both electrum and electroncash will be opened at the same time since i have to go to options in electrum, look for private keys... copy that and paste that into electroncash?

5.  Once i do this, the BCH will appear in my electron cash wallet

6.  Use my main computer with the nano ledger s and have the bitcoin cash split opened where it shows the BCH receiving address.

7.  Then send the BCH from the electroncash on the secondary device to the BCH address.  But if i were to do this, how do i copy and paste my BCH address from the bitcoin cash receiving address to electroncash?  Thus if its the same device, i would just copy and paste the BCH address from the nano ledger to electroncash.   Im not going to type it out manually right?  Or should i be doing that since its a separate computer?  Or just send an email of that address to another email address and open it up on the secondary computer so i could copy and paste?  I know i sound confusing here but i assume you know what i mean by this?

8.  Have BCH in my nano ledger s.  And anytime i send bch to another site, i make sure i click on bitcoin cash and then split.  Everytime i use bitcoin, i click on bitcoin and segwit right?   Also does that mean i no longer click on remember my choice when i click on bitcoin?  I did that earlier since i only used bitcoin.  So what would happen if i click on bitcoin and then legacy or bitcoin cash and then main?  there would be 0 btc and 0 bch in those wallets right?

The whole point of using a copy of the Electrum wallet file is that it means you don't have to type your seed in, so there is no chance that a keylogger can get it... You're simply using ElectronCash instead of Electrum to open up the wallet file (it'll even have the same password!)

But yeah, use the seed if you want... it really doesn't matter... one way potentially exposes the seed, one way doesn't... both will allow you to get BCH

This is the video that shows how to get bitcoin cash from electrum and the video is 1 minute only.  Its titled get bitcoin cash out of electrum in 60 seconds on youtube.

So this isn't the proper way then?  There is no mention of electrum wallet etc.  Just the 12 word phrase that you have to input.

Hi there well thats confusing for someone like me but im sure ppl who are not that savy would find this confusing.

Yes i had btc in electrum at fork.  Nothing obviously in nano ledger s when the fork happened.

So you are telling me when i click on bitcoin cash in the option of bitcoin or bitcoin cash, i have to click on SPLIT as oppose to MAIN right otherwise i would have issues?  So you suggest i first do this... then that way i have BCH addresses available.

Then i install electroncash on same computer or different computer and input the seed.  Then i would get my BCH in electroncash.  Then send all the BCH to my BCH address in my nano ledger s when i click on the receive tab on the BCH account right?  Sorry im still confused why you say open an old now empty copy of your electrum wallet.  Isn't electrum not necessary at all to claim bitcoin cash?  I thought you only need to download electroncash and input the electrum seed.

Yes i know you could claim your bitcoin cash anytime.  I havent claimed it after all this because i didnt have another device and thinking i could mess it up.

So you mean if i had btc on my ledger nano s during the fork?  Im confused here
The "Main" wallet on the Ledger Nano S uses identical addresses to the BTC Legacy wallet and exists so people who had BTC on Ledger at fork can get easy access to BCH...
Why confused? It's pretty simple...

BTC on Ledger at Fork = BCH on Ledger BCH "Main"
BTC sent to Ledger AFTER fork = NO BCH on ledger

It's like EVERY OTHER WALLET... Roll Eyes

BTC on at Fork = BCH on
BTC sent to AFTER fork = NO BCH on

Quote
Yes i had btc in my electrum during the fork and a long time after it.  I just recently transferred all the btc from electrum to nano ledger s.
Then Ledger BCH "Main" is useless to you and will be empty... use "Split" from here to find your shiny new (empty) BCH wallet and receive addresses.

Your BCH is on the same addresses as the old Electrum wallet. Use ElectronCash to see your BCH.

Quote
Then i go and claim my bitcoin cash from electroncash?  Or should i claim my bitcoin cash from electroncash first before i set up bitcoin cash in nano ledger s.
You don't "claim" BCH... it's not like this is a time limited thing... or you do anything special... BCH currently exists on the BCH blockchain for any BTC you had at the time of the fork... if you haven't done anything with it, it will just be sitting there... You can either leave it there... or move it by importing your old BTC seed/private keys into a compatible BCH wallet... which in your case would be ElectronCash (as it reads Electrum seeds/wallets)

So, in your case, install ElectronCash, open a copy of your old (now empty) Electrum wallet with ElectronCash... all the BCH will show up and you can send it wherever you want (Ledger "Split", Exchange etc) or just leave it there...

Hi there.  Well i have btc on my ledger nano s right now.  I transferred the btc already from my electrum to nano ledger s already.

So you mean if i had btc on my ledger nano s during the fork?  Im confused here

Yes i had btc in my electrum during the fork and a long time after it.  I just recently transferred all the btc from electrum to nano ledger s.

With my bitcoin wallet on the nano ledger s, i already chosed segwit as opposed to legacy because others all recommended that so i did that earlier.

So you want me to create the bitcoin cash wallet by pressing bitcoin cash and then split?

Then i go and claim my bitcoin cash from electroncash?  Or should i claim my bitcoin cash from electroncash first before i set up bitcoin cash in nano ledger s.

No... the whole "main"/"split" thing is ONLY if you had BTC on your Ledger Nano S...

If you had BTC in another wallet, like Electrum, just use "Split"... The "Main" wallet on the Ledger Nano S uses identical addresses to the BTC Legacy wallet and exists so people who had BTC on Ledger at fork can get easy access to BCH...

It is NOT a good idea to continue to use the same addresses for BCH as it is easy to get confused and send the wrong coins to the wrong wallet.

BCH Main = derivation path m/44'/0'/0' (same as BTC Legacy), uses the BCH network for creating/signing transactions
BCH Split = derivation path 44'/145'/0' (BCH derivation Path), uses the BCH network for creating/signing transactions

BTC Recovery = derivation path 44'/145'/0' (BCH derivation Path), BUT uses the BTC network (designed to recover BTC send to BCH address by mistake)

BTC Legacy = derivation path m/44'/0'/0' and BTC network
BTC SegWit = derivation path m/49'/0'/0' and BTC network

Okay so i just watched a video on the setting up of bitcoin cash wallet on the nano ledger s.

So claiming the bitcoin cash from electroncash from what others tell me is very easy.  Download electroncash and then send the bch to the nano ledger s.  However,. if you set up the bitcoin cash wallet correctly such as if you have to first click split first before you do it again and click main, then you are going to have both your bitcoin and bitcoin cash balance decrease?  I saw comments on youtube where their bitcoin wallet went to 0 because of this.  A video mentioned make sure you do the split otherwise your balances will both decrease.  Can someone explain what he means by this?  So basically if you make a mistake here, you can lose your btc and even some bch?  If so, man this nano ledger s configuration/setup for all these coins are very complicated.  I really thought the ledger s was very simple and even though im not tech savy, im not a complete tech newbie as installing electrum is not something that is super simple for most ppl... but this is very complicated for a wallet that supposedly is very easy.  You could easilyl make a mistake or think you make a mistake.

I already have the bitcoin cash program installed on my nano ledger s.  But should i even send bch from electroncash once i claim it?  Im thinking maybe just keep bch in electroncash or send it to an exchange as im worried i might do something wrong here and then my bitcoin balance will get lower etc.  Can someone tell me about the main/split thing?  First off, they ask questions like legacy or segwit and then main or split.  So basically if you pick legacy or segwit, well if you pick legacy, you only pay a little more transaction fees... no big deal.  But here if you choose main instead of split, then you risk losing your bitcoin and even bch?

Hi there yes okay so yes i downloaded the green arrow next to bitcoin cash.

Oh you mean i just open up the bitcoin chrome app.  Then i click settings, blockchain and then bitcoin cash right?  And after this, what do i choose?  There is main or split?  I had btc in electrum when the fork happened.

And do i click remember in that page of bitcoin or bitcoin cash?  I assume dont remember since i mostly will log into my bitcoin app as oppose to bitcoin cash right?

So when i log into bitcoin wallet just click on blockchain and bitcoin and segwit and then my btc wallet will be there like normal?  But if i choose bitcoin and then legacy, then there will be no btc showing right?

And everytime i log into bitcoin cash, dont click remember since i rarely will log into to it?  I am planning to just get bitcoin cash from electrum... send bitcoin cash to nano ledger s and just store it in nano ledger s.

Am i suppose to click on that green arrow next to bitcoin cash to download the wallet?  ...

Yes.

Because when i did that, it ask me to confirm on ledger s my pin to download.  It then downloaded because i saw when i click right button, it goes from bitcoin to bitcoin cash.  However, when i open the chrome app, there is only ledger wallet bitcoin and ledger manager.  Shouldn't there be an app that shows ledger bitcoin cash?  Because how am i suppose to access my bitcoin cash wallet?  I already closed the ledger wallet bitcoin app.

What you did (when downloading an app in the ledger manager menu) is to download an application onto your nano s.
You can access your bcash wallet via the bitcoin chrome app. You will be asked which chain you want to use (BTC/BCH).

When you have your BTC app (chrome) open, you can click on 'Settings' -> 'Blockchains' and choose BCH.
Then you will have to open the bcash app on your nano s to be able to actually send BCH.

Okay i wont use vista or xp and will use windows 7 computer then.

Am i suppose to click on that green arrow next to bitcoin cash to download the wallet?  Its the list that shows

bitcoin
bitcoin cash
bitcoin gold

and the whole list of other coins?

Are there any issues if i use a very old laptop that might be using windows xp or vista to claim this or that might be issues?  Again, im planning to send the bitcoin cash and gold to my nano ledger s.

I would not suggest to use xp or vista. Simply because those OS are outdated and contain a ton unpatched vulnerabilities.
It would be more efficient to use an USB stick from which you can boot a linux distro. Claim your coins on this live os.

Also when i click on the chrome apps, i have the bitcoin ledger wallet and the  ledger manager showing only.  So basically if i want to have bitcoin cash/gold and say ETH or any other currencies, i need to open up ledger manager and click on the down arrow and download the bitcoin cash, gold wallet etc right?

With the ledger manager you can download those wallets onto your nano s.
You need to do this with every currency you want to hold.

Note: The storage of your nano s is limited. You  may have to uninstall apps before being able to install new ones. Your coins stay safe! You just have to uninstall/install the application again. Takes 5 seconds.

And then i would open each one of them up to use it since you cannot have bitcoin opened up and bitcoin cash opened up as i read one issue with the the nano ledger s is you could only open one currency at a time?

Yes.

Right now i just want to get the bitcoin cash and gold.  But there is no bitcoin diamond there.  So how would i be able to get that since the nano ledger s doesn't have it?

The nano s does not (and probably never will) support bitcoin diamond.
If you want to hold this shitcoin (better you don't) you need to install a bitcoin diamond wallet.

Hey all.  I just sent my btc from my electrum to my nano ledger s.

So now i want to claim my bitcoin cash and gold.  Also does anyone know if you could claim bitcoin diamond now or not?

I mentioned how i only had one computer and didn't have access to another computer as it was recommended to download electroncash on another computer even though HCP and a few others say that is absolutely not necessary as they downloaded electroncash on their computer with no issues.

At the moment, i do have access to 1 or maybe 2 computers.  One is an old desktop computer that uses windows 7.  I had formatted it a while back but im pretty sure i did not do it correctly because it still had old files there.  So there is/might be a chance there is a virus there.  But if my plan is to just download electroncash and then send the bitcoin cash to nano ledger s, then that should be absolutely right fine right?  Or should i make sure i do a complete format of my desktop first before i download electroncash on the desktop?  I havent used that desktop in a very long time and do not play to use it after this as my laptop is my main computer that i use etc.  There are no issues with using an old laptop that is windows 7?  Now could i also do this with bitcoin gold?  I would like to send bitcoin gold to the nano ledger s as well.

Are there any issues if i use a very old laptop that might be using windows xp or vista to claim this or that might be issues?  Again, im planning to send the bitcoin cash and gold to my nano ledger s.

So based on this, would you guys recommend me use the desktop computer to claim the bitcoin cash and gold?  Or maybe even another laptop that uses vista or even xp?

Thanks all.

To the nano ledger users, i have heard cases where the nano ledger s is very confusing to use and heard people say they made mistake and you could easily make a mistake of sending bch to btc wallet and vice versa and stuff like that.  Is that true or false?
It's false... the Ledger Nano S is NOT confusing to use. It is relatively simple and straightforward...

However, like a LOT of Bitcoin/Bitcoin Cash related things, because BCH was attempting to "be Bitcoin" and deliberately chose to use the same address format, there were a lot of issues with people sending BTC to BCH and BCH to BTC... because they were careless.

This was NOT limited to just Ledger, nor was it Ledger's "fault"... I've seen plenty of cases of people doing it to/from exchanges like Poloniex, Bittrex, Coinbase, Binance etc (hence why ALL the exchanges put the warnings about making sure you're sending to the correct address etc.)... and also with various wallets like Trezor, Bitcoin Core/BitcoinABC, Electrum/Electron Cash, Exodus, Jaxx etc... and other online services like changelly and shapeshift etc.

I see Bitcoin Cash has now introduced a new "CashAddr" format to try to reduce the amount of issues going forward. It won't stop it completely, as "legacy" addresses remain valid, but it should hopefully make it a little less likely that people mess things up by being careless.

It's true Rewording after reading HCP's post: It's true that some users may think it's confusing and will end up sending coins to the wrong address (not Ledger's fault). But I'm not sure if Nano S already supports the new cashaddr format for Bitcoin Cash which will make things easier.

Normally, both BTC and BCH will have the same valid addresses in both chains. So, my address 1NinjabXd5znM5zgTcmxDVzH4w3nbaY16L is valid for both chains and can store BTC and BCH. This means that you can send BTC/BCH to the opposite chain by mistake (BTC to BCH or vice-versa); (Btw, If you do that but you own the address - which is the case with the Ledger Nano -, you can recover it.)

To avoid this kind of mistakes, BCH adopted a new format that looks like this (which like I said above, is or will be supported by Nano): bitcoincash:qrhyrhms7kplesyktkfv2ea53x2dlacuuuxna40hym

I assume that because my BTC is already in my Ledger Nano S (BTC wallet) that using this risky Electron wallet is not the same security risk as when someone splits their BTC from the Electrum wallet?
Yeah. It should be safer because even if a fake wallet steals your private-keys, there are no Bitcoins in there anymore. So you are only risking your BCH.

But you can *kinda* trust Electron Cash Smiley (at least for now)

Ok I understand. I do have the wallet backed up on a USB drive. But the backup was made when I had BTC in it. I since sent my BTC to my Ledger Nano S from my wallet that was on my PC.

So what will happen when I go to my old backup Electrum file (from my USB drive) that was made when I did have my BTC in it?
Nothing will happen. Like I said above, you backup once and the file will be the same forever. There is no such thing as "old backup" with Electrum.

Your coins are not stored in the file. You don't have any BTC but the BCH is still there in the blockchain, waiting to be spent. Do like I said and you will see your BCH balance.
