Jedi, I'm a poker player and was aiming my whining at variance as a whole, rather than BTC Guild. Variance rules when you're running hot, of course.

What made me extra cranky was the large jump in my shift percentages from the temporary decrease in our hashing power. When people came back, I was hoping to be showered by many block awards with artificially high payouts to yours truly. Instead, Lady Luck squatted over us and peed in our mouths as those shifts ticked off the screen one after another.

Yeah, I know some folks like that sort of thing, but I'm not one of 'em.

ASICMiner may soon have some exciting new miners. But this is a game where waiting is deadly to your income. If I was just getting into mining now I might just start with the first wave of Gridseed Scrypt ASIC miners and skip Bitcoin mining altogether.

I've been mining since sep 2011, just with a few tours overseas, I left my GPU's and a BFL block running idle for most of my mining time. I do agree that to someone just starting, scrypt would be the way to go, but for me I don't honestly care about turning a profit on this, its purely a hobby for me. I am now getting into migrating to new hardware, and yes I am really out of touch on it all.

The only thing I do when I sell coins is put it back into this. Long story short, I just dumped a large portion of coins I have made since I started(first time ever selling) and have $7868 to spend on hardware and would like to know which way to go. It looks like the Antminer S1 is the best choice right now unless there is another secret powerhouse out there?

I think antminers are the best bang for your buck at the moment.

Like anything else, though, your bang will decrease as time goes by with increasing difficulty.

I also came from Slush as I had started there in June 2013 and stayed thru many shady payouts but always made more there than other pools when I tried others with a few miners, but lately the pools hash rate had not kept up enough to get enough blocks to payout what you can make at other larger pools. The other fact is Eleuthria answered more questions on Slush's pool forum than the pool operator.

Thanks Brandon, I have been looking at scrypt mining also, and am just using this as an excuse to spend more time in my office with my computers and toys. I don't really expect to make any real money from this or at least turn a measurable profit. I do have an abundance of PSU's laying around in the 750-1200watt range.

the Asicminer Cube is the best deal at the low end. Currently $420 from JonesGear.com. That gets you a 30GH/s device that will do 38GH/s in overclocked mode. You'll need a separate power supply, too—I'd recommend getting a 750watt PSU so you can run two Cubes at some point.

If you're willing to spend a bit more, the Antminer S1 is 180GH/s for $1,187, a much better deal if you're willing to invest the money. It overclocks to 200GH/s, and it also needs a separate power supply.

These prices are always coming down because any given mining device produces fewer Bitcoins than it did the day before, all things being equal. The Cube, for instance, was $900ish 4-5 weeks ago. Within two weeks, I imagine they'll be in the low $300 range.

Unless you're interested in Scrypt mining, the Gridseed Infinity Mini device you mentioned is not as good a deal on a $/GH basis compared to the Cube. If you are interested in Scrypt mining, this device has the benefit of being able to do either Bitcoin or Scrypt—or both at the same time.
