Bitcoin is mentioned in the first episode of the second season of The OA (Netflix) series when a woman whose missing daughter comes to a private detective to ask for help - and when asked if she has money, she shows a mobile wallet with 30+ ETH, and a friend of the detective explains that it's something similar to Bitcoin.

Thanks, added to the list!

She wants to know if you'll help look for her granddaughter.

00:04:48
She got any money?

00:04:58
What is that?

00:04:59
Ether.

00:05:01
What's ether? Is that some kind of, like, digital currency? Is it like a bitcoin?

00:05:10
She was getting it on her phone.

00:05:12
It's basically virtual money, but...

00:05:14
...it says here she's got $31,000.

00:05:18
Then why is she homeless?

Was about to ask in which part of the episode this mention takes place, but you've already answered the question directly! Thank you very much!

There are two small references to bitcoin and cryptocurrency in the movie "Don't look up" on Netflix:

1:16:45 --> someone in the background just shout "Buy cryptocurrencies!"
1:21:54 --> one character says, off-camera: "Not bitcoins. Ratcoins..."

Can you specify more in which season and episode the mentions take place or is it a movie?

There's a new, really well made, German documentary:

Human B (2021), The Insight Journey Into The Bitcoin Rabbit Hole | Youtube | Vimeo

I didn't see it mentioned in the original list in this thread, so I'm sharing it here. Absolutely recommended.

Thanks a lot for the report and the good preparation of the links Wink Added it to the list!

Brian Bot says he's going to go on Reddit and explain bitcoin to people

Thanks, I am not sure, do you mean "Netflix- Explained # Season 1 Episode 5 "Cryptocurrency"? Because this documentation is already listed in the overview.

'South Park: Post Covid' special (set several decades in the future) mentions Bitcoin at 10:02 and (as you'd probably expect) not in a particularly flattering way.   Grin

Thanks, added to the list! Found video snipped on Youtube  about the scene Smiley

1. Blackhat - A Hacker based movie where hacker used BTC as their payment method.
2. Hacker - There they also used it.
3. Unfriended Dark Web

Could not find any hint on the web that Bitcoin is mentioned in these movies. Can you provide more information like where it is mentioned (at what point in the film) or do you know any Youtube clips?

Sorry, i hardly check old message or login to bitcointalk.

Movie name - Hacker
Used bitcoin - watch from 41:15 ( Movie link )

Movie name - Unfriended Dark web
Used Crypto - Movie part

For blackhat i don't remember the seen. Have to watch the movie again.

I am watching Gold, a movie with Zac Efron, set in the near future, and there is a great reference to Bitcoin at 8:15! Two characters are listening to the radio while driving and we can hear a journalist saying:

'Bitcoin is currently trading at 1.25 million US dollars. Leading charity cryptocoin, Avatar Eclipse, contributed another one million in aid to the Northern Territory caught in the crossfire. It's now trading at 2244 US dollars or 14,500 Yen.'

I love that they decided to go with 1.25M$/bitcoin Grin I am guessing the year must be 2030 or something. Makes sense that a movie about gold should have at least one good reference to Bitcoin Cool

Will update this post if I spot another reference. The movie is available on the streaming platform Stan.

Yeah, saw this, but it was so minor and quiet I had to turn on the subtitles to check I heard correctly.

There's a film coming out this year that seems to have bitcoin at the center of the plot:

There have been a lot of series and movies in which Bitcoin has appeared and with the popularity of the cryptocurrency increasing, I expect many more series to present the subject of Bitcoin to the general public. This is just a need to actively attract the attention of viewers who mistakenly promote BTC widely. The movie aims to help people know about BTC and bring BTC closer to users, maybe they want to imply that BTC will be a widely used technology currency in the future.
You assumptions is fine but Bitcoin is widely used technology even though it is not be approved by world government or world control council of currency, example world bank, Bitcoin is using everywhere across the world and no country is ignorant of bitcoin even though the government there prevent citizens not use it as a legal tender, but it has gone viral to human blockage

In the second season of the German-Luxemburgian fictional series "Bad Banks" (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6258718/) Monero gets some protagonism, as two of the main characters (who are bankers doing some shady business) use it to hide money and pay a group of Ukranian developers for work their team should normally do themselves. Bitcoin is mentioned too, but they finally choose Monero for the operation.

It's in Season 2, Episode 4, at around 8:20 (scene starts at 7:35, just checked it). A wallet is shown at ~10:00.

Thanks, I watched the series myself and liked it but could not recall the scene. So I did a short rewatch and can confirm Smiley Added to the list.

In Homeland, Season 7 Episode 2, Carrie Mathison's laptop is infected with a ransomware and the hacker asks for $5,000 in bitcoin in order for him to decrypt her hard drive. Honestly, I hate that we keep seeing Bitcoin as a criminals' tool to blackmail people.

I think it's being mentioned somewhere in the middle of the episode; didn't see the exact minute.

Thanks, added to the list. Surprisingly this is the first entry of Homeland in the list, even I read that in an recent article that they must be several mentions of BTC in the series.

I know there are still some submissions open. I will check them in the next days and add them to the list.

Since late 2017, bitcoin was mentioned almost daily in different news channels. Although it's still better to be mentioned in art works as it could reach larger community. Not everybody is watching the news nowadays  Cheesy

Did anyone have notice this topic :
I was surprised to see Bitcoin mentioned in the Ted Lasso finale. That has to be one of the most popular shows out right now on AppleTV and nowadays that’s barely newsworthy. We’ve come a long way…

In the scene a man on the phone says he bought Bitcoin in 2009 and repeats 2009 while laughing. Pretty cool.
I checked Op of there is a field for Tv shows but found nothing. This so cool to see bitcoin in one of the most popular shows nowadays.

I haven't seen any of the movies or series mentioned above(some of them were added to my watch list) but I will watch this one for sure https://cointelegraph.com/news/coen-brothers-take-silk-road-story-to-big-screen-oscar-in-view
I'm excited and hyped since Coen brothers are among my favorite directors/writers and they are going to write the screenplay about silk road and Ulbricht's case I don't know if this is going to bring some bad publicity to Bitcoin but I am almost sure that the result will be great.
I looked for the movie announced five years ago according to this quote. Does anyone know about this project if it's suspended or still under work ?

Cryptocurrency is mentioned in a Ted Lasso episode, S02E09, at 25:05, by an hotel manager who don't want to lend his phone (he's afraid it's gonna be hacked).

FBI international # Season 1 Episode 3 # 05:21

subtitle - edited to be more conversationally readible

But Swiss police got that these two were hired transporters moving four cryptocurrency wallets to a place called Wellix, a cryptocurrency vault in the Alps.

- I've heard of that place-- it's basically the Fort Knox of cryptocurrency on the planet.

- Full disclosure: my grasp on cryptocurrency wallets is similar to my grasp on "Finnegan's Wake,"

- which is to say loose, in a nutshell. Wallets are the equivalent to a safety deposit box.
If you don't have a crypto wallet, your coins are sitting on an exchange somewhere online.

There were some online hacks in the past that caused some concern over this. Hacks are less likely today,
and companies are being held to higher safety standards, but some people still feel safer having their coins in a wallet. The downside is, if your coins aren't online, they're essentially sitting on a flash drive, or wallet.

If you lose the wallet, you lose it all. Speaking of, this guy in London is paying the city 7 million pounds
to search the local dump to find a hard drive he tossed, the one with 27 million in Bitcoin on it.
