This should be added to the pinned topics in the B&H section, or at least in the Rules as a reference link.

Thank you for sharing, I will note this

You are a old member, generally new members do this mistake. I doubt if they will read the post, this should be made sticky to get their attention.

Even I do not like at all for copy paste, however this information is very useful specially for newbies here including me. I like original idea, but need to be understood if sometimes perhaps found similar sentence purpose (not purely copy paste), it is not copy paste as long as I know. Even same in idea but the wording is different, it is still original and not copy paste.

Example:

Quote
I was once a devoted Catholic. From when I was a little kid playing Lego to when I was a young adult stressed out about the future, I was a proud believer.

I still remember how it was to study in a Catholic school. Every class starts and ends with a prayer. Every day at twelve noon everyone recites the Angelus. Every first Friday of the month there was a campus-wide mass. Apparently, praying was a casual habit for me back then.

This is nice example which I hope all Newbies to read -- the explicit use of the forum style "quote" makes it very clear.  Sometimes I see posts putting "source: ~~~" at the end of long quotation without using "quote", which is confusing and should be avoided.

Why rewrite is also prohibited? I ever rewrote someone else article once, and my work rejected.
"Why is writing in my own words not allowed? I took some text written by someone else and changed it, but my work was not accepted."

Do you see what I did there? If you can't add anything on your own, you're not adding value by producing more text with the same purpose.
Oh, i see. So we need a new concept about and develop it without cross over the points

I would say that this, at the very least, is a grey area. If you class completely rewording as copy pasting, then 90% of the content on the forum would disappear - not that that would necessarily be a bad thing. The example you have given above would not, in my opinion anyway, be viewed as copy pasting. However, I do agree that when rewording, it should be common courtesy to cite the source and preferably add even a touch of personal opinion. Can be difficult if you just happen to have the same opinion as someone else though. I found a few copy pasters that have used posts of mine to create their own, some of which took it word for word and tried to pass it off as their own opinion. Only happened to catch one because it was in a thread that I had started, so was going through and checking it out, I'm sure there are plenty more. Either way, it is a frustrating (and unfortunately inevitable) aspect of a popular forum, just have to keep an eye out for transgressors and report posts when you spot them. Good to know that the rules are being enforced anyway, banning is (hopefully) an effective way to discourage the practice.

I dunno why many people would do that (copy paste). Are they rushing for something?

Sure they are: Merit.

I recently fell for a copy/paste case that I merited and can be seen here: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.35209623
The guy managed to fool three of us into awarding him with sMerit for a well written post that even ended with a gentle "Thanks for reading,", giving it a more personal touch. In my case, I  went through his post history and there wasn't anything too fishy about it, so I went ahead and awarded his post.

Theyoungmillionaire nevertheless was more suspicious than me and managed to track down the original article where the post was copy/pasted verbatim.

Shame Merit can't be rolled back during a timeframe (let's say 24 hours). Felt like when one sends a TX to the wrong address and wishes there was a rollback mechanism.

Edit: Nearly awarded 1 sMerit just now to another Jr. Member with a good post and a decent history of posts. Googled his post and found it to be a verbatim copy from an official European Commision website. Reported it to mod. What a waste of a saturday evening.

You can say that, ahahahah sometime they tend to be sound like  encyclopedia but sometimes fails because same people have already read what he had copied and pasted and which source it is. They do not practice  creating a phrase out of from the source source.

i think that this is a good idea, because a lot of people are just copying and pasting other users work trying to get credit for it and i think its totally unfair.

Even a new way of copy-pasting has been happening here in the forum. For instance, you wrote a reply in one thread and somebody copy and paste your reply either in the same thread or in another one quite related to the first topic.
It has happened to me at least twice since the last week, but I reported both cases and they were erased (next time I will keep a copy for showing it instead of just reporting).

Have any of you had the same problem? Or maybe we don't realize, for this is happening between languages too: they copy, paste and google translate your topic into another language... Have any of you noticed this issue?

Anyway, newbs, pay attention to Vod here, for this is really important, and many people will be banned if they have this behavior. This post must be on the beginning on the board, locked so it never disappears.

Well, it should be obvious that copy-pasting aren't fine, it's a theft. But I think that some people will never learn. And I'm sure that many of these people understand that they are doing something wrong by stealing content, but as long as they are getting payments from bounties and nobody will catch them - they wont stop.
In past I remember that I copied something and posted here in quotation marks, not quote tag and I posted link to the source. It was something like:
"------Copied content-------"
Link to the source
I hope I did nothing wrong...
Even a sophisticated copy/pasting using homograph techniques won't help you anymore, like the last guy on my list > link

You don't need to waste both your and mine time, I'll catch you and report you anyway Cheesy
In such cases I think it's quite difficult to catch these smart bastards.

A lot of accounts are being permanently banned for copy and pasting.   Undecided

Copying someone else's work is stealing - by taking away the page view on their site, you take away their revenue.

You can reference information on another webpage, but you should paste only a few paragraphs (minority of the article) in a Quote tag, and immediately link to the source.

Example:

Quote
